Does any WCers use a pocket watch as their daily watch? How have people reacted to it?

Before my recent large weight gain (damn you endless Fall Festivals of Cider, Apple based desserts, and cheeses), I briefly had the confidence and the figure to wear the fashion style I had always loved, what I always thought was called Ivy League chic but is now called Dark Academia aesthetic. Dark colors, textures, tweed or dark wool coats, vests, wool trousers, and for some, a pocket watch. I always loved the romanticism of pocket watches, but have never met anyway that uses them in their day to day life. Would love to hear from any of my fellow WCers that have embraced the pocket watch!

I am too “sturdy built” to sport a pocket watch. However, I do own one for when i get back into my prime weight!

·

I wouldn't wear a pocket watch. Just not my style.😕

·

I like the idea of it…but the practicality of it would never work for me. Plus I just like looking down and seeing the watches the I love on my wrist.

·

On the daily no, I only wear my pocket watch when I rarely dress up though.

·

I don't, but my younger brother is a pocket watch fan and has several. He tells me that people look at him as something of a Luddite. 😂 I think it is cool.

·

I really struggle to choose a watch every morning, please don't put this in my head also! 🤯

Does my iPhone count?

I know the feeling. When I was at my good weight and headed to class people the first day thought I was the professor because I looked like something that came out of a period piece. That professor came in on the first day and apologized thinking that scheduling had put his class and my "class" in the same room xD.

Hello. I've had the same thoughts as you.

I have my Spanish grandfather's Longines from 1904 and my Scotish one's Dundee jeweler-branded (around the same time).

I would love to wear them for special occasions but quite afraid to damage them or have them stolen (one is silver, the other is solid gold).

I have thought of buying a Tissot pocket watch but would still need to learn how to correctly wear it.

Haven't really answered your question but now you know you are not alone in your dilemma 😆.

I have two pocket watches but only use them for fun around Christmas. And even then I don't wear them on a chain - only sitting in my pants pocket for an occasional time check. I don't have vests to be able to wear one as intended.

·

My brother has loads including minute repeaters, hopefully there is a style change and they come back, come the apocalypse this might work hahaha

My son went through a phase of wearing vests over t-shirts. He had a couple “gift shop” pocket watches but they didn’t stand up well to teenager abuse.

·

I feel like people look at us strange enough because of mechanical wrist watches. Pocket watches as a EDC could be a step too far 😂

·

I did in college, approximately 1999

This crosses over into full hipster affectation. If you're going to dig into your pocket to see what time it is, just look at your phone.

Or I can just look at the watch on my right wrist or the watch on my left wrist and keep it safe in my pocket!

Today was considering it! Went with my girlfriend to the flea market and found some quite interesting alternatives. She wants to use it as seen in the picture! I think that for a woman that would look so cool and classy.

Please not with anything vintage or valuable!

It looks fine right up till the bow pops off and the watch hits the floor. I had that happen once with the chain on a Howard. Thankfully the ring hit the floor and the watch stayed in my pocket.

I keep one in my rotation for fun. My wedding watch gifted to me by my wife. The best part of the hobby is that people for the most part really don’t notice watches. Upon the rare occasion that they do it’s usually complimentary.

Does my iPhone count?

heh really just is the modern version

·

I rather want one. Don't think I'd carry a vintage piece about...but a modern one? Sure. With a wrist watch. It'll be my non gmt gmt set up.

·

The world's most overbuilt pocket watch! 😂

·

I did as a quirky teenager. Real lady killer.

Once upon a time I worked slinging pizzas and spent most of my time elbow deep in dough, sauce (& the rest of the ingredients) and the deepest dishwashing sinks I had seen. At the time I found a cheap manual wind pocket watch, very basic, to replace my cheap manual wind wrist watch. Weirdly, these manual wind watches did not lead to my present obsession, they were just cheap utilitarian watches. The khaki trousers I wore had a watch pocket so I used it.

Last time I wore my white gold South Bend watch (now 100 years old, inherited from my grandfather) was 34 years ago at my wedding. Even if I didn’t feel a bit silly, and even if my wife wouldn’t roll her eyes, it’s still too dear to me to feel comfortable wearing it casually. Next time might be when one of our kids gets married.

My father in law. He's an odd duck

·

I should start, they are chick magnets.

·

technically my phone is also a pocket watch

·

Wish to have one, still on studying progress before buy one

·

No, its not 1817 where i live 🙄

I have two pocket watches as part of collection that I rotate in and out. I haven't used one in months, since I need to perform battery changes. I also have a special collectors pocket watch that I never use because it's a limited release.
