One watch to rule them all? ( on holiday at least) The Tudor Pelagos

I'm coming to the end of a one week holiday in the Greek Islands with my seventeen year old son.

It's been a lovely break with the usual weather, food, sea and excursions.

I deliberated for a while on which watches to bring. I went for three..

The Tudor Pelagos 42mm

Orient Mako 2 on a rubber strap

Vintage seiko 5 ( a @GasWorks production) as a dress watch.

All of these at home form part of my rotation from a collection of thirty odd watches.

Yet I have been here a week and haven't taken the Pelagos off my wrist. It has covered all bases including snorkeling trips, gym sessions, pool and sea swimming and of course the beach. I've rinsed it after each sea swim and the pool under the shower and it's been good to go for the restaurant evening meal.

Image

I have been wondering why I have been content to just stick to the one watch and whether in future I need to bother bringing more than one timepiece?

Am I wearing the pelagos because it is definitively the ideal all round holiday watch? Am I wearing it to show it off as it is one of my most expensive watches?

Should I even be wearing it constantly when I have more than a few cheaper yet capable divers that would be far less costly to repair or replace?

I'm of the opinion that tool watches should be worn without any fear and expensive watches should not be babied in any way.

I know lots of people would disagree with that?

I think I may have found the perfect watch for a beach holiday/ vacation?

Answers on a postcard please? ( no body sends those any more!)

As an aside my son and I have been watch watching at meal times in the hotel restaurant.

For context this is a medium sized 5 star beach hotel. Vacationers are roughly a third British, a third Scandinavian and the rest mainly Eastern European.

From our observations only about a quarter of guests wore any type of watch at all. Those that did the vast majority were apple/ smart watches. We saw a few dive watches and some chronographs, mainly quartz by the looks of it. A few ladies with dress type watches.

I didn't see a single high end piece and not one person even appeared to notice my watch at all!

Crushingly disappointing as I was looking forward to some idle watch chat whilst pool side!

My conclusion....we enthusiasts are a a very select and tiny bunch of people in the scheme of things!

Some excellent shots ,not sure what people around the pool would think ,great all round watch ,did you have a bun fight for the sun loungers like we're seeing in the daily mail

·

Yep the usual early morning recce to get the best sun beds! No one seemed to notice me and the boy trying to focus on the dial versus water going everywhere!

·

Dude!! Love it! You are doing it right (IMHO!)

I wear my most expensive watches (they are tool watches like yours) on mountain tops under the sea and on vacation! They are tool watches living their best life, and I'm exited to collect experiences with them. If I was poolside in Greece I'd 100% talk watches with you and bore the hell out of you with my Prospex LX or something similar.

Was just on a different thread whose subject was 'it's best to wear homage watches for adventure' (I believe 'fake' is a more apt descriptor). I railed against the idea, perhaps too harshly, thinking it was missing the point of loving your favourite watches.

Thanks! Yes I was hoping for some watch chat at some point but literally no one amongst the other guests wearing anything interesting that I could see! Perhaps on the plane home?

I'm not averse to all homages. Steinhart have been on my radar for a while.

Which Seiko 5 made it to Greece? I'm honoured

Lovely photos of the watch in action. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to your question. Use your watches the way you want to. They were built for a purpose and they used to be used for that purpose until the whole luxury scene came about. Of course you must remember the risks involved when bringing your watch on holiday (loss/theft) and as long as you are ok with it, it’s all good.

You did not seen a single high end piece cos there weren’t any tourists from Asia. 😆

It’s great you wear your watches on holiday with your son. He’ll see that watches can be worn to swim and be active in and will develop a better appreciation of watches (if he isn’t already) It will also be part of his collective memory growing up.

Pelagos 42 is my favorite watch that I own. If they did it in a GMT and could reduce the thickness, that might be the most perfect watch for me ever.

·

Glad to see you’re wearing your more expensive piece the way it is supposed to and building some memories. I am the same way and I do not come from a lot of money but once people jsut wear their expensive watches out and about in the ocean, gym, ex they will see they are absolutely fine and arguably better made for it than the cheaper ones lol

·

Great photos. No fellow WatchCrunchers at this hotel, I guess. Maybe we spent all our money on watches and there’s nothing left for vacation (holiday).

Awesome post! 🤩

Thank you for sharing this with us

Keep up the good work 🙌🏾

Yea me neither and when I first bought the Pelagos I was nervous just wearing it but that soon changed!

Thank you! My son is gradually being converted from no interest ar all. He's at the interested stage and wants a particular casio for his birthday next month so that's a good sign!

Yep my favourite too! They are on the tall side but I've hit used to it!

Love the Pelagos 42mm! One of my grail watches. As others have said, use it, enjoy it and create memories with it! 👍🏻

Thankyou! Very glad I got the full fat version. Was actually after one of the many black bays when I went into the AD but as soon as I tried on the Pelagos it ticked every box!

Love the Pelagos, love the pics, agree with your tool watch stance. I wear mine on a Zulu Alpha nato most of the summer but these are great on rubber too.

I haven't taken mine off its bracelet yet which is unusual for me. I must try the rubber it came with!

I haven’t tried the OEM rubber either but I’ve heard it’s really good.

It is a great watch and one of the few that can be worn day in and day out without fear!

And doesn't seem to grab unwanted attention like the submariner!

One thing that popped into my mind, say some water got in there after around 3 years and then you tried to claim the repair under the warranty. Would they have insisted on at least one service or pressure test? About to pick up my first Tudor (this exact watch) and plan to wear it to make memories (and have a son that I'd like to recognise it as the watch I wear everywhere) so can't check what the warranty terms are. Anyone know?

I've never heard of that issue before. I have just returned from Mauritius where I was wearing the Pelagos in the sea every day. Snorkeling not diving. It remains my go to watch. To my knowledge the service interval is 10 years? I can't see it needing a pressure test before that.

I have had my Pelagos LHD for three months and also cannot take it off. The bracelet is the most comfortable I have worn and adjusts easily for wrist comfort. I actually don’t think I would ever fit the rubber strap. The crown action and manual wind are solid and I have even noticed when the crown is locked on my piece the Tudor logo is in its correct position. The ceramic clasp retaining ball clips are an Awsome addition. The bezel action is very firm. The roulette date dial is a great feature and the snow flake hands have grown on me. I actually think the lume is excellent. Great watch cannot fault it
