It's a MAD world - on your wrist (and sadly IRL)

Image

After entering every lottery faithfully and being a very long-term fan of the MB&F brand (over a decade now, from back when it was quite unheard of!).... I FINALLY won a lottery and got a MAD 1 watch apportioned to me.

Quick Aside

For the unfamiliar, Max Busser normally makes watches that cost a few hundred K, and a few years ago he did a cheapo special edition for friends of the brand that cost more like 4k.

'Friends' were those that had assisted him with his journey into becoming a more esteemed independent and they weren't publicly available.

Based on the fanfare that first watch received, he started holding lotteries every several months to apportion out another thousand or so watches in a different colorway. Since demand far exceeded supply, one's chances were often about 1/30 to get lucky.

He even employed a bailiff to administer the lottery as he didn't want anyone to think anything other than luck would determine outcome. He said if anyone was detected to have more than one entry they were kicked out. If you were suspected of buying to flip - you were kicked out. All things I very much appreciated.

I also should mention, the small supply wasn't by design, just his very limited capacity to make watches at volume.

Aside over

Well, I happened to get lucky on that last lottery (I'd entered ALL several of them without success) followed by an extended production time and then an extended shipping time and then an extended pickup time. OMG it was torture waiting so long!

Image

BTW, @Mr.Dee.Bater was my saviour during the process, he is a hero than walks among us and I can't say enough nice stuff about him. 🫶

The watch came in a futuristic foam box with shiny orange cardboard sheath. Even with watch and bonus do dads the whole package weighed almost nothing. Empty box feel when I picked up the outer shipping box!

Opening didn't disappoint.. cool and clever was the dominant theme of packaging.

First day with the watch I wore to a colleagues retirement party ...and it's got to be the first time I've got several compliments (or WTF questions) on a watch within just a couple of hours. 😀

That said I wear watches for myself and it's the happy feeling this one gives me that I'm really treasuring.

I expect some downsides will crop up - legibility and difficulty in cleaning, all good tho’ , very happy camper here 😊

Congrats! Super cool you got your hands on one. I like this green one better than the red, green is my favorite color. Definitely a keeper for life. Very hard to get and very cool to have something by this watch maker.

·

Where do you play the lottery is it on the website?

·

Grats!!

GRAIL.

·

Absolutely insane build and amazing addition man. Huge congrats.

That’s some serious dedication. Congrats!

I had no idea they were still making them and running lotteries.

I do not understand these at all. Not my cup of tea, but I'm glad you're happy with it!

·

Congratulation to your win👍

·

Congrats man! I'm happy for you. Max busser is the man. He knows how to make his fan base loyal and feel appreciated. Love the lottery system and this extra touch specially for the 3x "losers".

I'm going to keep faithfully applying and hope I get there one day!

It's a chonky boy but gets away with it because it's so cool.

·

Congrats! Look amazing 😎

·

🤯🤯🤯🎉🎉🎉🥂🥂🥂

·

It really is Art when you look at the entirety of the design.

Ahhh you lucky bum!

I was ‘MAD’ at all you guys who got 1st time lucky, while I failed again and again.

Anyway, now we are besties 👯

Your TikTok song is right on point 🎯

I used “hypnotize” - which also seems fitting 😵‍💫🤩

Thanks my friend!

You said it, a brilliant guy at the helm makes a difference

BTW, The height doesn’t bug me at all, it’s very light and I often like a watch that’s tall enough to stay exposed with sleeve above it 😉

My Seiko LX is a Ti tall-boy and wears the same, so the new MAD1 feels quite perfect 😌

Definitely polarizing- I’m actually glad to hear from a few people who think I’m nuts.

Like yourself, I’m always happy if a fellow collector gets something they are excited about - even if I wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole 👍

My recent watch purchase only got two responses and two of them were mine. And we say the name of the brand doesn’t matter? And Men can give birth. 🙄 But I’ll be a good sport and say damn that’s a nice watch no joke I’ve seen one recently go for like MAD money lol.

sorry to hear about a NWA without much traction.

I think it’s crazy to say brand doesn’t matter. Omega vs Seastern? Kudoke vs Casio?

We all have various brands we love or aspire to. Personally, I care who makes my watch and how it’s made. And I care if they create an original design vs is it a pure rip off of IP? So brand matters to me.

And no need to comment on a watch you don’t dig!

Yes, seen them on sale for about double what the purchase price is. Matters not - this is a keeper.

As mentioned, it Annoys me that people would enter the lottery with no interest in keeping it, or find sneaky ways to get more than one entry.

It deprives us long term fans and forcing people to pricey grey market. Probably same guys do it with Rolex as well 🙄

Thanks BTW. I do like your watch I've seen them online and on YouTube. My comment was more tongue and cheek. I did a thread about why so many can't admit the Name on the dial means a lot more than we admit it does. If I were to say hey I got a new insert luxury brand here, I'd get hundreds of responses but since I didn't buy a luxury brand crickets. People can tell me a Casio is just as important as Patek, or a Tag is just as important as a Omega I'm never gonna believe it. But I'm just a regular guy who likes watches.

·

Super cool watch. Congratulations!!

Super cool watch. Congratulations!!

Thanks John. Been admiring the ideas from MB&F for ages, so great to finally get a taste.

BTW - saw on your profile an preference for antique clocks, so here’s my great grandfathers 1890 clock - keeps great time!

Wow! That is a great clock!!! Yes. I have multiple antique clocks passed down from my uncle. You’ve got a treasure there!
