How would you redesign the snowflake hour hand?

It seems like quite a divisive design among enthusiasts. How would you change the snowflake hour hand?

I think I'd make it an arrow.

Id make it marginally smaller.

Good question.

I really don’t like it for two main reasons:

  1. It doesn’t point at anything; and

  2. It’s too large and dominates an otherwise quite appealing design.

So as a starter I would make the large square a fraction smaller and leave the square with its corner naturally pointing to the indices (so leave off the outermost squared tip).

Would really need to see what that looked like in order to see if it resolved my main gripes. But that’s how I would start.

·

Anything but that.

·

Maybe an arrow instead?

You could do that longines did but to be honest I wouldn’t change them my Pelagos 42 is the most easy to read watch I own in any situation I do think they look and work a lot better with square markers but the smaller hands set on the black bay looks alright and it’s part of Tudor design

Would not change, fine the way it is. What annoys me more is the persistent use of the masses using the name snowflake to describe a diamond, or diagonal square.

If forced at gunpoint to change it, I guess I’d like to see what it looks like without the little mini square on the corner doing the pointing, just take that off, and see what the sideways single square looks like.

·

I’d make it BIGGER

·

You don't change it.

·

I’d have it match the minute hand (but shorter obv)

·

Imo, thin it around the diamond flare portion. It shouldn't be larger than the pip/ triangle on the bezel lol.

Also, remove it completely from the chronograph. We can argue about using your watch, but for those that do, it's almost undeniably in the way no matter how you swing it.

·

I like it the way it is..... but another option would be a Mercedes hand ✋️

·

I hate it but it’s iconic

·

I honestly wouldn't, I used to hate it but it grew on me

·

It bothered me at first when I was looking at Black Bay variants. Then I came across the pelagos (MN FXD specifically for me), and I realized it wasn't so much the hands, but the mismatch of the "square" hand and round indices (for me).

With the square/square hands/indices on my FXD, it is something I actually appreciate. That said the minute hand doesn't really fit the theme!

I'm a sucker for whatever type of hands these are though... sword? dauphine? alpha? No idea...

It’s an hour hand, why does it need a point or an arrow?

·

If keeping the snowflake design I would add a needle to end of the hand,

If I where to pick a hand style I would change it to a cathedral style hand.

·

Change it to broad sword. That ugly snowflake is what keeps me from buying it.

·

Wouldn’t change it. Personally one of the main reasons I gravitated towards Tudor. I think it’s better to have people both love and hate your design than be boring oatmeal

The snowflake hand isn't bad, it just belongs on the pelagos and not the black bay. The black bay deserves its own hour hand.

·

I wouldn’t. I like it just the way it is. There’s plenty of other brands to buy if you don’t like it.

·

I love the snowflake. It is modern, abstract, and sophisticated. It gives just enough silhouette of the Mercedes hand without copying. I loath that they changed the second hand to a lollipop. Now there are 2 different shapes rotating on the dial 🙄.

That's a really good point!

I quite light broad arrow hands, that would be a huge improvement

·

Love it , keep it!

In my early years of collecting, I thought the snowflake was for the utterly deluded, or partially sighted. I found it so incredibly ugly - It was a monstrosity..how could anyone tolerate such an eyesore!?

But over the years, and with changing needs from a watch, I came to understand and appreciate the incredible legibility it brings - day and night. Of course there's the historical military references too. But having owned a couple of Tudors now, I've fallen in love with the snowflake hour hand for it's practicality. It's an textbook case of function, over form. It's certainly not pretty or stylish or fashionable. It's not there to cater for your aesthetics. It's there to do a job; A utilitarian, brutalilst, tool for diving.

I won't go as far as saying: If you don't like the snowflake, you are a snowflake...

But you might want to reconsider messing with the snowflake hand. It might grow on you. It did for me.

💪😜

·

it's a stupid design b/c it doesn't point to anything. The simplest fix is just to change the flat tip to an arrow shape. Make it look more like a diamond.

·

sword hand with the shield logo on the opposite side. I could swear they purposedly wanna make it ugly because of Rolex though - it's a level they cannot surpass.

Use something like the #monta SkyQuest or any of the #monta watches as the inspiration. They have the best-looking hands. Lovely broad sword hands, great legibility.
