Paper-based magazine dedicated to microbrands - it's a go!

Alright, I'm moving forward with this idea for a physical magazine focused on microbrand watches. 🍻

To the 39.8% of you who say you're not interested, you're dead to me. 🤣 To the rest of you intelligent, beautiful, upstanding people, stay tuned. I've already contacted the first potential brand to profile, but know this might take time because I'm an unknown in this space.

The premise is that each issue is totally devoted to one brand, cover to cover, highlighting the people behind the brand, watches, and designs, plus profiling some owners/collectors and related vendors (straps, cases, dials, etc.). It would be "high-end" and rely heavily on photos and longish articles. No ads, no watch reviews, and nothing would be requested from the brands (no money, no watches to review, no nothing). This is just a fun project for me to explore. I'd then try to sell the issues to lovely watch enthusiasts like you, but keep it at or near the cost to publish (via Blurb, that's roughly $22 per 70-ish page, high-quality issue - for reference, Hodinkee mag is $38 and way above my project's aspirational level).

Let me know with a ✔ if you're interested in following this process, and I'll provide occasional updates here.

Feel free to suggest microbrands you'd like to read about. I have a list of about 40 going but would want to start with the more familiar but smaller (just one or a few people) brands and eventually move to more well-known microbrands.

Thanks!

Traska, Swiss Watch Company, Sherwood Watches, are the first three that come to mind

✅ Christopher Ward has Loupe magazine and every couple of months one shows up in my mailbox. I appreciate the effort and take time to read it.

@Case563 - I am definitely considering that! You interested?

·

Definitely. Would Love To

✔ sign me up as interested! The idea reminds me a bit of Magazine B. For each issue they focus on a specific brand. Below is a link to how their magazine is designed.

Get me on your list. ✔️

Love this idea. Microbrands make up the bulk of my collection and I’m always on the hunt for more.

OMG, @project880, Magazine B is my inspiration! Love that and have the Guinness and Lego issues on my desk now! If I can come close to their vibe I'd be ecstatic!

70 pages? On a micro brand? I don’t know about that…

68 of those pages would be watch photos. 😝

·

This sounds cool! I’m definitely interested.

I love Loupe! Also love how they frequently highlight other watch brands. 👍

I applaud this effort, but 70 pages for a single brand? I would like to think I am well versed in many of these brands, but not sure I could fill that many pages for a single brand, especially with no access to the watches for photos, unless they are brand provided. Some questions or thoughts about making it engaging:

  • No reviews? I think readers would love a well thought out consistent take applied evenly to every watch.

  • Any comparisons?

  • Brand or designer interviewers?

  • Market commentary? IE, Great price or over valued?

  • Guest contributors?

  • How will you pay for your time? I love the idea of hobby, but having been there, once it becomes work, the hobby becomes less fun.

As far as lists, I would start with the micro brand tournament lists. That covers most of the popular brands and it is easy to go back to the heavy hitters the last two years to see where there is interest. Wish you the best of luck and if you do make it, I will gladly buy a copy to support you.

Dang!! Love this!! 🤙❤️

·

70 pages is more MagBook than magazine, but I absolutely love the concept!

·

Say nay to the nay sayers and onwards with the quest 👌

·

Hope you get it off the ground 👏

I think im one of the ones that is dead to you 😅but after reading this post im a bit more intrigued, if a mirco is featured im intrested in i might even order 👍

I receive Loupe, Christopher Wards magazine and I. love it. Its all over the place often articles on nothing to do with watches but mirroring a certain time in History GREAT ads,

The concept is quite intriguing. I'm old enough to have grown up in a time where eBooks didn't exist, so paper based publications were the only option. I really appreciate the benefits that digital options bring to the table, but I also still really appreciate being able to flip through a well done paper magazine, especially if it can be a "coffee table magazine" like the Esquire "The Big Watch Book" issues.

I don't see myself subscribing to a magazine focused on micro brands, however I would probably be very interested in the issues based on the micro brands that appeal to me. This would include both brands which I already have in my collection (Zelos, Brew, Studio Underd0g) as well as brands that I'm considering, but haven't made up my mind about.
