Micro Tournament Round 1 Day 4: Furlan Marri Vs. Habring²

Habring has my vote. I researched their brand and its very interesting and definitely in the spirit kf a true micro. I just can’t find their shop on the website so I don’t know how much these sell

Their site is not great and they are definitely more independent than micro, though they remain a small output shop. They are on the pricier side of the entants.

I went with the Furlan Marri. I just liked what they had to offer and the site for Harbing was dated and had me wondering if they are going to be around much longer.

·

Habring's website does stink. So painful to browse and looks awful on a phone.

·

Look I know it was hard making these brackets and in some sense you could see why you paired them… but cmon : Habring has ALL the chops here

And the fact that it's only a 53/47 split for Habring is quite surprising (and concerning)

I wish I could say I paired them, but it was all formula driven. They are absolutely two different leagues of watches, but Furlan Marri has started making some higher end pieces, like their flyback chrono.

I love what the Habrings have done, but since I haven't added one yet to the collection, I figured I had to vote for Furry Murry.

I didn't like FM's original overpriced mecaquartz offerings, but when they started putting mechanical movements in and upgrading the finishing...I was hooked...

Furlan Marri for no other reason than I like their name

·

This one has been the only tough choice so far.

·

Both are quite similar, yet so different. Habring for me because they are Austrian, true micro and watches are just unique. True - their web page could be way better and sales channels improved, but imo it’s common for many German/Austrian brands (not only watchmakers) and personally I rather treat it as a charming old school approach. True - in consumerist society expectation is flashing “sale” words, filters, quick “add to shopping cart” button, 10 different payment methods and so within few minutes of browsing you get another watch. Despite outdated page Habring has big demand, people who appreciate them will contact directly to check out price/availability.

·

Again, I haven‘t any touch points with these brands yet. Furlan Marri speaks more to me.

·

Habring are doing some interesting in-house movement stuff. I like it.

·

I own a FM - it’s gorgeous but these two brands live in completely different spheres of the watchmaking world. As mentioned, Habring are a lot more like an independent or an atelier. We’re talking things like blueing of hands and screws, lacquering of dials, monopusher chronos, deadbeat seconds (a very underrated complication imo and beautiful to see in action), they’ll also do customisation. They do have a very specific aesthetic which may not appeal to everyone and it’s not a brand which caters to someone who wants GADA watch (neither is FM, actually). The crazy thing about Habring is that they’re not overly expensive for the complications when compared to their German/Swiss counterparts

Right, one company is handcrafting, Watches , and the other ones having cases, movements, pieces, and parts purchased from other makers and putting them together. I’m really truly astonished this is even close.

One of them is backed by like, a billionaire and all he can come up with are very cheap and highly derivative designs while paying for and leveraging every media outlet and publication possible. Yucky

·

Wow this is close. Gonna come down to the wire...

·

Habring's complications are incredible. They do some things no one else is doing. Furlan Marri's models are nice Patek homages, though not much different from what you can find on AliExpress for 1/4 the price. Their new foray into mechanical watches are a step up, but they're not really in the same class as watchmakers like Habring.

Furlan Marri winning 🤦‍♂️

·

Furlan only has street credibility due to them kissing up to the Revolution guys and giving them exclusive references to sell. Without Revolution writing a lovefest about them no one would care. Even the secular perpetual from the infamous one watch seems to be a lot more storytelling than actual "wow" (though I could be terribly wrong on that and in that case will happily eat my words.) . Habring literally won a GPHG. They are in two very separate worlds. One is true horology another one is pure marketing hype.

To be fair Furlan also has a GPHG win.🥇 🤷‍♂️

Yes!!

I think part of it, if I recall correctly, it’s largely a two person shop, so they can only produce so many pieces a year. Added attention, likely met with a pretty long wait list, IE AnOrdain.

Interesting

Organizer note: I usually do not post after a window is closed, but just in case there is any controversy on this amazing match-up. I do all I can during the two weeks of the tournament to be consistent in cut-offs, new polls, etc. I usually close the polls just prior to 11 to update the bracket, post a daily update, and get the new polls out around 11. My notes on every poll say apx 11, and for 3 years we have largely had a clear winner heading into the hour.

In this case, at around 10:45 ET on the dot, I closed all polls. At that time, Habring was ahead 679 to 676. at 11, one person must have changed their mind, making it just a one margin. On both accounts Habring was the victor. There will be after cut off votes that may continue to swing the vote back and forth, but for the sake of the tournament, we have to have a cut-off to call it.

So this was the closest matchup of this year's tournament.

So this was the closest matchup of this year's tournament.

Of any, especially given the number of votes.

When you first posted the brackets I thought "yeah this will be fun but I'm definitely just a spectator, I don't really have an opinion." And then yesterday I was checking in literally every hour and I was so invested in this race! Haha, this has been incredible and it's only the first round, I'm so excited for this whole bracket now!

Love this! Thank you so much. Doesn’t. Matter how much or how little one knows to learn about new brands.

There goes my prediction with the Fs... And the "worst" part is I didn't vote in that one which means I could have tied it 🫣 That said, Habring deserves it every bit! I admire your commitment and accuracy with respect to the assessment of the voting!
