What's The Biggest Gap In Your Collection?

By gap, this could mean a type of watch that you either own none of or is underrepresented in your collection. I could only include up to 4 options in the poll, so I realize there are other styles out there that I wasn't able to list here, but these are the big ones. If you have a tie between multiple options, pick the style you are least likely to ever own and add your explanation in the comments!

Chronographs, as I find them absolutely useless. Phones, dive bezels, digital watches with timers, etc., are better timing devices for my uses. Chronographs just add extra clutter to the dial, and extra costs when it comes time for servicing.

·

For me, it's either Chronograph or GMT (I wasn't able to add GMT as an option since I could only pick 4 responses). I used to own a cheap Seiko chronograph that I ultimately sold to a friend. I certainly appreciate chronos, but I just don't feel a burning desire for one. It boils down to the following for me:

1) The pushers on some models can become quite the eye-sore and they throw off the symmetry of the watch. And although I proudly rock my watch tanline, I don't need two extra knobs adding to it 😂

2) They can become rather thick watches, particularly the ones with fully mechanical movements.

3) The dials are typically too busy for my taste.

As for GMTs, I don't travel enough or have a business/personal reason to track a different time zone, so have never felt the need to own one. Looking forward to hearing everyone else's thoughts!

Chrono for me as well. Simply because I haven’t found ‘the one’ yet. A few have come close i.e. omega speedy, breitling top time triumph, zenith (safari edition) etc.

·

My modest collection only contains one dress watch. which is plenty as I typically don't dress "up" very seldom. casual/sporty/military-inspired watches are more my thing. I do own 4 chronographs, so that is quite enough of that type I think. have 2 divers, but could see owning another (or replacing one of the 2 with another). 2 fields, which for now is enough, though this style is one of my faves. 😎 Others are casual pieces and a couple of vostoks

A Helm 😉 !

Pilot field for me, but not really a gap. I’m lukewarm on field watches and dislike pilot watches immensely. I could be talked into a Glycine Airman, though.

·

I love chronographs and have 3 of them. I don’t mind that the chronograph is thought to be a bit pointless. Watches are a bit pointless now as we all have a phone that tells the time more accurately in our pockets. I picked dress as I only really have one of them and it was a present, I love it but I generally find dress watches quite dull. I appreciate the skill involved in making something more minimalist when you can’t hide any mistakes but it’s just not for me.

·

like many of the other commenters, i find chronographs to not be very useful. they’re beautiful to look at. but i find very little need for a chronograph.

however, i do love a good count down mechanism, like the JLC Memovox. the ability to quickly set a timer with an alarm? incredibly useful!!

that’s why the JLC Polaris Memovox is on my wish list. but it costs too many beans… sigh.

·

I do use the chrono feature and will sometimes choose a watch to wear that day simply because of it, so I have a few from which to choose.

I only have one field/pilot watch, an AliExpress el-cheapo. But I'd like to have a Hamilton Khaki in the collection.

·

All of the above! 😅

·

Dress watch for sure. I am loaded down on chronographs and divers. In fact, my dress watch is a vintage chrono.

·

I picked dive, because I only have one true diver (currently), but to be honest, I am fairly well covered as to all of those 4 options -- some of my pieces overlap:

Dive - (1) Glycine Combat Sub; (2) Tudor BB GMT (it IS 200M WR); (3) Glycine Airman DC-4 (also 200M WR)

Chronograph - (1) Longines Master Complications (Auto); (2) Phylida Speedy Homage (Manual); (3) Citizen Skyhawk Blue Angels Titanium (2nd Gen) (Solar-powered ani-digi quartz with chronograph)

Pilot/Field - (1) Glycine Airman DC-4; (2) Cronos IWC Mk. XVIII Le Petit Prince Homage; (3) Citizen Skyhawk Blue Angels Titanium (2nd Gen); (4) Victorinox Swiss Army Ambassador Automatic; (5) Tandorio Field

Dress - (1) JLC Master Control; (2) Longines Master Complications (it's a dressy chrono); (3) TAG Heuer Carrera Twin-Time; (4) Tudor BB GMT (it dresses up or down)

·

I voted chronograph even though the real answer is dress. But I actually want to add some nice mechanical chronographs. I can easily go without any dress watches.

·

For me, the gap is definitely pilot. For everyday wear, I gravitate toward dive since it is more rugged. For traveling, I pick GMT. For formal or work, I pick dress. For horology reason, I own a few chronographs. Maybe it is my personal taste, I am not a fan of the German "flieger" style.

This is why I prefer meca quartz for my chronos. Cheap, easy to service, and lots of options.

Honestly, an absurd, fun watch. Something with a dial that screams "Hello!", Thinking about a salmon or loud yellow. Hey, what's your watch? Well, geez, this is a so and so, xyz movement, quartz cuz it's for fun, sapphire glass and the dial? Well thats inspired by...yada yada. A conversation piece.

·

I don’t think I have anything I would consider a gap. I’m heavy on divers right now and only have one chronograph. I like other chronographs but not enough to buy them.

I have round and rectangular white dial dress watches. I have a couple of pilot watches but no dedicated field watch. I have a “smart casual” watch, or however you might categorize the Bulgari Octo. I have a Ball that’s a solid workhorse watch.

Rounding out the collection is a small group of vintage watches that could easily double as dress watches.

A little bit of everything i have just started collection

Ana-digi.

The only ana-digi watch that I currently own is the old ProTrek PRG-510GB and it's a pity because I can still remember how I thought it was radically cool when I saw my first ana-digi watch sometime during the 80's. I think it was a Casio and for me it was a revelation: combine the precision of quartz, a date/time that I don't need to set and a chrono complications with the ease of reading the time of an analog watch, it was brilliant!

·

Zero interest in dress watches or chronographs , I'm a fan of robust simplicity.....

Tho I'm currently wearing my Pogue so take the above with a pinch of salt 😁

·

Hm, i ve got all of these- GShocks the most🤣 but one of these days i like to get a Tourbillon- movement (though my grail- watch is not one of these)

My head says you're right but my hand keeps reaching for my wallet.

This is my totally my thing.

The one on the left is for fun times, like watching serie a and the one on the right has a self made dial by me.

·

Chrono for sure. I have the others covered. The Chrono I’d go for is the Speedy but it’s still a bit big for my wrist and rich for my blood 😂

·

Come to think of it, I don't have an actual dress watch. I have a couple of dressy Bulova and Seiko watches that I wear when I wear a sport coat to an event. I mean, if Bond can wear an Omega Seamaster NTTD in a Tux I should be able to get away with a decent looking Bulova or Seiko when I'm going business casual - I think...

I guess my Brew Metric counts as a chronograph, but I only bought it for the looks. It's never been a complication I've been drawn to. Could you call my Aqua Terra on leather a dress watch? Maybe?

Love em both! Yeah if I could have included more poll options, "everyday watch" would have been a good one to help capture those watches that occupy the space between pilot/field and dress, which is how I personally view models such as the Aqua Terra.

Gmt watch.. most gmts just look like a dive watch to me with an extra hand that to be honest, most of us can just alternatively use simple mental calculation.. so, aesthetically, I dont really find value in a gmt complication.. it is less useful than a chronograph or a dive bezel for example and aesthetically doesnt do anything for me.

I tend to agree with your view on GMT. I could see it being useful for someone who constantly deals with different time zones, perhaps if you work a lot with international clients, or you're in the military, etc. Or maybe if you routinely travel between multiple time zones. The selling point is the convenience of not having to do mental math, although I've heard that some GMTs are a pain to set, so maybe that cancels out the convenience. But I agree that in basic situations it's not hard to simply compute it in your head.

Of the 4 choices I'll least likely add a field/pilot watch again to my collection. I think a diver better serves me as a sports watch, and I want to add more dress-y watches in the future.

Agreed, divers just fit the bill for everything I would want from a field/pilot watch. It feels unnecessary to own a field/pilot when a diver does everything they do and more (okay, some pilot watches have fancy complications, but I'm talking about the basic ones). Almost every time I've considered a field/pilot, I've ended up picking a diver instead. I tell myself I need to branch out more, but I'm still working on that haha.

·

I want to go on the record that I like chronographs! I'm not looking at any dress watches, I can just put on something I already have on. I'm not a dress watch guy mainly because I thehave the perception of fragility looking at dress watches. That also keeps me away from smartwatches! Of course I'll wear a bambino before wearing an applesauce.

·

Dress watches look great but are just not practical for many people. I personally enjoy swimming and I also live in a country that is considered unsafe. Hence I like to always have my watch on my wrist. Sports watches especially GADA watches look good anywhere and are practical. While this argument can be said about chronographs, the charm of a heuer, or the heritage of a speedmaster just speaks to me more than any tourbillon or ultra complicated botique brand.
