3 watches (or brands) you would not want even for free.

Imagine a fantastic world where all the watch brands come to you and offer any of their watches for free. There is only one condition: you cannot sell those watches. Only own and wear. What would be 3 brands you would say no?

For me they would be:

Image

Ulysee Nardin (Uglysse Nardin in my brain. No offence, please)

Image

Jacob an Co. Absolutely not my thing. Too big, too crazy.

Richard Mille. Think this is the most controversial. All the same, all chunky, ugly beasts.

What are yours?

  1. Daniel Wellington

Great choice.

·

MB&F

Richard Mille

Kobold

I try to never say never, but...

I am excluding ANY fashion brand.

Richard Mille

and I cannot think of a third... I feel most brands will have at least one watch I would want.

I've sworn off ever purchasing a Rolex (easy for me to say in that I refuse to play the AD game and won't ever be able to afford secondary market prices), but would accept one if offered for free.

MVMT

DW

A Lange and Sohne (fight me)

MB&F

Richard Mille

Kobold

MB&F could be added to my list. Have never heard of Kobold before.

·

MVMT

DW

A Lange and Sohne (fight me)

Lange and Sohne? Wow! Impressive boldness from your side.

·

Mvmt, Dw, all those fashion types and yeah the ugly Rm

Interesting to know when a brand stops being a fashion brand and becomes watch brand?

I find it hard to find three brands that's not pure "homage" or terrible quality fashion watches that I actually wouldn't wear, but watch models? Sure. Maybe.

I guess my have grown soft with age.

It's so shameful to say, but I had an Oulm watch long before I got into watches. But a fact is a fact 🤣

What would be the three models? That are good quality, but you wouldn't take that for free?

·

I don't like Vostock Bostock or whatever they're called.  Nothing to do with the war and everything to do with me thinking they look crap. Same with Nomos or Junghans; boring looking to Me

·

For me MVMT and DW & I would not, could not keep a Richard Mille.

·
divefroggy

Wow. That’s a good question. Hate is a strong word. I just don’t like them. Both brands are just profiting from cheap and very badly made watches and they’re targeting folks who don’t know any better. I was one of them in the past.

I think we've all been there at some point

·

Wow. Thank you for notifying. Will probably stay away as well. There are too many watches to like ))

·

All those watchmakers with bold and tacky watches. Mainly Richard Mille, Uhrwerk, Jacob & Co.,…

·
witcher.watcher

If we are following the fantasy task - you can't sell it. It's the only condition.

alright then id have to go with Richard mille

Just 3? No, I'll list more.

  1. Modern Doxa, Aquastar and anything Synchron. Their conduct has been absolutely horrible. The mere thought of a penny from my wallet going to Rick Marei is just repulsive.
  2. Daniel Wellington. DWs are probably the most flimsy watches I've handled...ever.
  3. Anything Movado Group - Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss, MVMT. Just, no. I used to work for retailers of that junk, and saw more than my fair share of it. Enough's enough.
  4. Richard Mille. Absolutely hideous.
  5. Hublot. Their design doesn't speak to me at all. Quality-wise, they're of course really good, but I just don't like one bit about the way they look. My feelings about them range from ambivalence to loathing.
  6. Rolex. I wouldn't want to get shot or stabbed in the street for wearing one.
  7. Jacob & Co. Same as Richard Mille, they don't even make me wanna vomit. They make my vomit want to vomit.
  8. The IWC Big Pilot. OK, I get it, it's an icon. But it's also an unwieldy dinner plate that would spend all its time in the drawer, even if I got it for free.

The first one, I'm thinking it could be not true, or that you hold a grudge against Rick, that is unless you provide solid evidence about what you are talking.

·

Did you get bad luck with that particular Metric?

That is a pretty hot take.

I don't know Rick, but he seems generally well-liked and comes across well in interviews.

I certainly appreciate his resurrection of the DOXA Sub (one of my favorite lines of watches).

Well, it's not a hot take, it's just that seeing Rick being slandered like that make me think that the person slandering him must have a bad interaction with him or that they hold a grudge towards him, or, in the absolute worst case scenario, bad faith actors being paid by someone to undermine his reputation.

Sorry, I wasn't clear with my wording.  I was totally agreeing with you; the post that you replied to was an unusually personal shot.

That said, I've been known to take those at Kobold, but that stuff is pretty well documented.

·

Do you have proof? Also, Teddy Baldassarre praised the watch in one of his video on his main channel (link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n6l0hkFaN0) and he isn't paid by Jonathan from Brew to do so.

He and his "mods" at WUS are well known for indiscriminate banning of everyone who posts anything questioning Doxa's marketing claims. You're welcome to try posting there any underwater photos of a colour disappearance sample, which questions their claims of the superior legibility of orange dials underwater. Let's see how long will it last.

I also happen to know a few members of a forum he took over - and in the process of shutting it down, he sold all the members' email addresses to spammers.

All of them started to receive it at the same time? Coincidence?

Then there was him trying to claim that Doxas - including SUB - were made entirely in Switzerland. Let's have a look... Oooops!

If you'd like to think that a coincidence... Let's look who owns Walca, with the parent company in Switzerland, and a manufacturing facility in Hong Kong...

...the owners of Doxa.

And from Mr. Marei's career as a Doxa mod at WUS - a watch owner complains? Ban him!

Now, Swiss companies outsourcing parts manufacturing to China is something commonplace. But you can either be open about it, or handle it the Doxa-Jenny-Marei way.

I would call them artisan jewelry makers that use delicate and accurate mechanisms. They are mindblowing, but not as watches to me. I don't want Faberge eggs as well as I don't want Jacob and Company watches.

Hold up, is this from before 2019? Also, in one of my BanG Dream!, Love Live and South Park crossover fanfic (link here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/42165000?view_full_work=true ), Yukina Minato of Roselia got a Doxa Sub 300T Sharkhunter as a wedding gift from Kyle Broflovski for her big day with Nana "Setsuna Yuki" Nakagawa from Nijigaku.

It's quite scandalous. I really dislike cleaning comments and banning people for negative comments (if all of those is true). The claims about Doxa made in Hong Kong by a screenshot on a website? I don't know. It is suspicious but doesn't prove really anything. I work in design business. It could be just a photo from a production line they had and placed on the website without actually producing parts there, but, again, that is just a possibility. Reading this I could say Doxa couldn't keep spotless reputation, nor is Rolex, nor is AP.
