Falling in and out of love

Just a quick post to see out the year, almost. As the title says its about falling in and out of love. I have done this many times, with food, cars and TV programmes and in this instance a watch.

Image

Back when lockdown began I succumbed to the Alpinist lure that was everywhere. When shopping for groceries the person behind the counter would say "that's £4.99 please" but what I would hear was "buy an Alpinist", so I did. I got a Euro edition and when it arrived I was a happy as a sandboy. It looks great, it's the goldilocks of sizes for me and it did scream quality. I knew about alignment issues and mine is out. If I was a polar explorer this may be fatal, but to me, I cannot find my socks even, so it is not such an issue.

Image

It was to be my posh weekend watch, as it were, and in lockdown it didn't see much action, as I was shooting at ships in World of Warships and ignoring Team Meetings with work "sorry boss internet down again, must be all the people in lockdown playing games" When things got moving again I noticed that the hit and miss 6R35 movement was miss for me. I would set the watch and come back an hour later, to find it was yesterday, or the day before even.

So I started to fall out of love with my Alpinist. We all know when I relationship is hitting a rocky patch. I would ignore it, sulk at it and moan at it. It totally ignored me of course. I thought; get it regulated and sell the bloody thing, file for divorce via eBay. So I did, regulated I mean...amusing link attached.

In the comment @Bayl61 who is known to talk a load of old rubbish and is of unsound judgement (kidding!) advised me to hold on a while longer perhaps. So we are falling back into, if not quite love, a period of fondness again. I think I will keep it, but after seeing @SpecKTator Nodus I am torn. Perhaps keep it and have a mistress on the side ?

Anyway have you fallen in and out of love, then back in love with a watch? Would love to hear and see.

Keep the Alpinist AND get a Nodus. Unlike women, you don’t have to choose one or the other 🤣

I'm falling out of love with the Explorer and I'm trying really hard to reengage with it, but so far haven't felt the spark again. I don't know what I will do but all seems to indicate in a few months we might part ways.

Sometimes, I look at a site called Brainy Quotes, so basically I appear wise and intelligent (I assure you this is not the case) but a quote came up that was apt.

We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. T.S. Eliot.

I know the site. I do the same thing too and I'm also not very intelligent, hehe. Amazing quote indeed.

I put in "end of relationships" in the search and that came up !

That's brilliant :D

I fell in and out of love with my green alpinist about twice in the year since I've had it. Currently in the "out of love" phase. But I know that's what it is, just a phase.

·

Like pizza and women, there good and great but it's all good. I may not love the watch as much as when I bought it buy I still like it.

·

My green/gold Alpinist doesn’t see all that much wrist time these days but I still love it for its unique design and great specs. Ok the movement is running around +12 sec./day, but other than that I think it’s a great watch. Wait a while… 👍

Cheers Dave, mine is at 12 also (now), and happy with that. I think it's a keeper.

I’ve had my TAG Chronograph for 23 years. At the the time, there were only 3 dial colors and I thought this was the best looking of the 3. It was the first watch I bought that was over $1000 ($3200 actually, now worth about $800) I wore it daily for about 3 years until I got my GMT but took it on a year+ long deployment, so it has a ton of personal history. Because of that I’d never sell it or give it away.

There were years that I never put it on, dinged, scratched and a timer hand that didn’t reset to zero after many drops onto hard floors. It kept great time though through those years.

So I’ve fallen in and out of love with the TAG so many times. A year ago I got it serviced, new dial, bezel, hands, crystal, I think even the rotor is new. It looks practically brand new, although it looks so plain compared to the current versions and even those just a few years after I bought mine. It won’t ever have the patina and vintage look of 60’s-70’s Heuer. So while it looked new it looks so plain and uninteresting so I decided I’d use colorful straps to “jazz” it up and I think that’s worked for the most part. I wear it at least weekly. It’s on a ZuluDiver Octopod NATO presently.

Superb watch and great to hear its backstory !

What a coincidence. I just finished recording my next episode which talks about how much I love the Alpinist🤣

Can we classify ourselves as "watch swingers"?

6R35 has a much bigger spring than 6R15. The spring seems to be not producing force as evenly as its predecessor. This means that 6R35 will show rather different accuracy as the spring unwinds. It’s a problem common to all watches, but extra long spring in 6R35 exacerbates the issue.

In practice, the regulating organ of the watch may not be to blame. 6R35 is just a lemon of a movement, inferior to 6R15. I mean, what is the point of 3 extra days if the watch will become so inaccurate it has to be reset anyway? It might as well have stopped and be rewound and reset.

However, if fully wound and worn to keep it wound, 35 should work no worse than 15. The trick is, it takes a lot longer to wind it manually. 50-60 turns of the crown, and not usual 20-30. Once fully wound and on the wrist, it should not be impacted by the variable force of the spring us much

I fell into- out of - into love with a seamaster this fall. I still might end up selling it but it won’t be without remorse.

Thanks for the info Serj, learned a lot there.👍

Falling out of love?? My dear sir, that's why God created NATO straps! 😁

·

Same problem with same watch. Sold it and bought Hanhart Pioneer One. Don't miss it at all as Hanhart is double the watch in all aspects and keeping me happy

😂🤣

·

This is why I don't sell any watches. I keep thinking maybe it gets back on my wrist :-)

·

Have the same feelings towards my SPB143. Must be a Seiko thing 😂

·

It takes me a few years before I even fall in love with a purchase. I was helping a client decide on a watch and I told him “I just recently fell in love with my OP41, and didn’t have the itch to trade up.” His face looked shook. I explained I fall in and out of infatuation with my pieces until I own them for a significant amount of time. Whenever I wear my Kermit sub I love it one day and want to trade it the next, I am sure I will have this feeling for a year or two until I make some memories with it and bang it up a little.

·

I’m considering selling my Traska Venturer GMT to help fund another watch. If Longines releases the Hydroconquest GMT in 39mm it’s definitely getting sold.

·

KEEEEP IT!

If the Oris name wasn't on the dial I never would have guessed. What a beautiful watch.
