Depends. Sometimes, like the Zenith Defy El Primero I can almost read the time, or the AP Royal Oak, or the Oris Pro Pilot or Artelier. Otherwise, it’s just too illegible for me. I compromise with an open heart or a display back.
I usually switch to one in the evening. I almost never “dress up” to warrant the watch, and only do it because I like the change from a more utilitarian looking dial all day to a lovely little looker on the wrist with the evening cocktail and dinner with family and my own pleasure.
Here’s a question I’ve heard raised on this topic: would you rather have that watch, or would you rather spend it on a family vacation getaway to build more memories?
Don’t feel pressured into getting one because it’s a classic and everyone says so. If it’s not your bag, don’t force it because of opinions and peer pressure.
It is a right proper chunky, bland, dime-a-dozen-diver, but it has soooo much charm.
