Is it a trap?

So, there's a certain watch I've been eyeing and I asked my wife how she would feel about me buying it since it's a significant purchase. Her reply was along the lines of " I know you enjoy watches, so if you want it go ahead, but I'm not sure it's the smartest move since we have a kid on the way. I'm not going to tell you how to spend money, but I would hold off for now"

I had the same philosophy in my head, so I'm not sure what to do. Curious for opinions from you guys.

All I keep going back to is "go ahead" lol

Kids are expensive. Wait for the watch so you can enjoy it without financial stress.

·

All depends on $$$ but before kid is alot safer than after. Cause that money always gets used for something. Once mine got out of the house my collecting went up dramatically.

I'm not so sure it would cause financial stress as we are doing fairly well. It's a chunk of change, but I don't think it would put us in the poor house either.

That's where I'm conflicted lol

·

It cost you nothing to wait and you get the pleasure of making your wife happy over this decision as she is expecting.

·

Kids are not cheap. List the kid on eBay and buy many watches with the money 👍

So for some more context, the watch is $2,600 and I've sold off $1,600 worth of other stuff. So really it would be about a $1,000 purchase.

😂 Does eBay allow human trafficking?

·

Shouldn’t have asked. Just kidding.

·

Haha well that means no without telling you no. I wouldnt say it's a trap because as far as my wife is concerned I know that means no and resentment will follow if I go through with the thing she said "I don't care" to. This is a consistent and reoccurring trait so dont think trap is correct word if you see it coming haha. So it just depends on what kind of problems you want. Maybe instead of getting it now, save and move money around if needed to where you can get you and her a gift to commemorate the birth of your baby. Then that way she gets a sentimental gift and you get your watch but it also has a special memory tied to it. That may turn the" I don't care" into" that's sweet you shouldn't have".

Truth be told I'm slightly terrified it might get used against me in a post birth hormonal rage lol

Sounds like a done deal. As long as paid off before baby arrives, I would go for it

This is a very realistic fear. My second kid was an experience for sure. I could have became a ninja with how much practice I had walking on eggshells.

Happy wife happy life! Also if you have kids that would be my financial focus. I raised 2 boys. I know. Also remember retirement. Save for that. I'm retired and saved and invested my and wife's money for that occasion. It works. I buy watches now with no guilt or concerns. I still have a watch budget.

Enjoy your watch!

Lol my $2500 watch got for $1300 at jewelry store also cost me $300 for a ring she wanted

Family first. You know best if you can afford it, asking here should not be relevant and also says something.

If you can afford the watch, without going broke, then go for it.

Years later you can say: this watch is as old as you my son/daughter. 🤗

There is a loophole.

I don’t listen to my wife…

🤣😆

·

Really not a good time for this imo unless you’re absolutely swimming in money which it doesn’t sound like based on her reaction.

Baby and wife comes first. First hand I’ll tell you pregnancy can really affect a woman’s mood and emotional regulation as well in general due to hormonal changes. It would be wise to just make the smartest and safest moves that help with the “nesting” mindset she may be having at the moment.

My baby is about to be two years old now and I’m finally starting to feel like I have more me time again. I have bought watches but was very focused pre-birth and the 5 or so months after.

Just my two cents.

MANSLATOR: YOU NO PURCHASE! SAVE MONEY FOR BABY! YOU HAVE TOO MANY WATCHES ANYWAY! 🤣

Exactly the same, once I became an empty nester my watch purchases went way up. Lots of disposable income now that I’m not paying for year round sports. I got lucky both kids got scholarships too - it’s like I won the lottery.

·

It’s a trap, don’t buy it! 🤣😂

This is gold, I like that one of the scenarios is what OP is asking about hahaha.

I thought it ended with “I’m not goingcto tell you how to spend money.” But actually your wife is crystal clear, “I would hold off for now.”

I appreciate how you were able to perform mental gymnastics by justifying 2.6k as being just 1k since you sold other stuff 😂. That’s totally me too 😅, girl math ftw!

·

Just my personal opinion - hang on. She's testing you...and you don't want to fail this test. 🤣🤣🤣

You got married yesterday?

"Femlogic processing chip" LMAO!

·

It's a trap. Focus on the baby. I'm in your shoes and I know what that reply means.

·

Get it & sod the consequences. You may not be in this position again for some time, & her anger will wear off over the years.

But I am a very irresponsible chap 😁👍🏻

·

It is totally a trap, don’t fall for it. The answer was NO.
