Mountaineers, what are you wearing?

The launch of the new Seiko Alpinist GMT got me thinking. What do mountaineers wear to scale peaks? Maybe the Rolex Explorer 1 or 2 but more likely a Garmin with GPS and Altimeter or rock hard G-Shock Right? What would you wear if going up was your only option?

I don’t hike or do any sort of mountain climbing. But my watch of choice when exploring the new neighbourhood mall will be the Explorer 2.

I wore my SARB017 the last time I climbed Mt Fuji.

The 2 always felt a little bit more “tool watch” than the 1 don’t you think Benny?

That’s awesome Cab! They sell a Mount Fuji limited edition. What a brilliant memory to tie in with your Alpinist!

I assume something like a G-SHOCK.

I wouldn’t know. I live in the Netherlands. We don’t have a single mountain in our country. We are, as a nation, scared of heights whenever we climb the stairs. True fact☝️

In my youth I was more of a crag rat than a mountaineer but a cheep cheap ! 😳. Casio was the watch to wear IMO. Can't imagine doing hand jams with expensive watch 😳

·

Last trip to China, including Tibet, I had my SARB017 Alpinist.

Sorry for the blurry picture.

I wouldn’t try to stretch it to mountain climbing but it is high up on wales highest

Shouldn't be very shocking:

Certainly! That was also why I sold off the 1 because it was “dressier” and I much prefer sportier or tool watches. The 1 was not getting much wrist time.

It’s more of big hill haha

Not a technical mountain climber but I've been trekking for years and to a few summits through via ferrata around switzerland and slovenia this summer, wore my Casio MPT 1214 on a sailcloth strap. Also nice and comfortable to swim and snorkel with :)

I disagree - how can u be scared of heights when most of the nation is over 7ft tall ? 😃

Apple Watch to track the elevation and call for help in case of emergency

It's my go to watch whenever I'm worried about damaging the watch. I hate the term beater but effectively it's my best beater! Legible too for my dodgy eyesight!

I don’t think any of my watches are beaters per se, just some are more sturdy than others 🤣

·

Last time (and first time too lol) I did a mountain climb, I’m pretttttty sure I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 Frontier on. That thing is a tank of a smart watch, and has a rotating bezel!

·

Proper mountain climbing, ie: not the kind of stuff that anyone moderately fit can achieve with no training (for example, doing Mount Fuji), needs a tough watch. An automatic doesn’t cut the mustard. It’s romantic that guys used them in, like, the 1950s and fun to think about… but, guys, it’s not the 1950s any longer.

·

A mountaineer friend of mine wears a Casio Pro Trek.

Here you go. Summiteer :)

That being said, if I had to pick absolutely anything, a radio controlled gshock square, deadly accurate, can do anything with it, and comfortable to top it off

Great watches Boldr!

Definitely, got this one for a steal as well, when it first was released one of their ADs in the UK had a pricing bug on their website and had it listed for about £150 under retail, so I snapped it up as soon as I could, last one of the incorrectly priced batch too!

·

Last time I wore a Tissot T-touch Ti, mainly for altitude and weather (air pressure).

·

Apple Watch Ultra or Garmin.

If I was feeling bougie maybe the Breitling that can send out a distress beacon

Otherwise an ABC G Shock

had a 214270 Explorer for two years. This shiny watch is such a scratch magnet that I cannot imagine getting it close to anything more abrasive than a wool jumper

Climbing a mountain is a job for a Sinn 556 A on a NATO strap
