What do you think of the price of the new 1908

Rolex recently revealed this new dress watch and it retails around the 20,000 dollar range. Do you think this is too much?

For me? 10000% it's too much. But it's not for me & I'm not for it.

·

Too much and I'm a Rolex guy. I like the watch but there is a lot out there at $20k I'm considering with some Rolex in the collection already. I have a list...

·

It's beautiful. And it is refreshing considering Rolex's stale catalogue. The exhibition caseback is the cherry on top. Idk about $20k. I'd rather get a Patek.

·

For the money there are other options I would choose, but if you're a Rolex fan and want a gold dress watch...

·

It’s wayyyy too much!

·

Seems about right?

It's a gold watch from Rolex. These 2 things (precious metal and Rolex) alone are worth at least $15,000. Throw in a good movement (albeit not as decorated as some others), good design, and $22,000 sounds about right.

To put this in context, it's roughly the same price as JLC Master Ultrathin (although the JLC is 1mm thinner) and A Lange Saxonia. These 2 probably have more fancy looking movements (although I question whether they are actually "better"), but the quality of the watches should be about the same. Also, this is about 10 grands cheaper than, says, Patek Calavatra. That seems about right.

·

It seems too much to me. Not sure who it will appeal to. I get the feeling dress watch guys with a bit of cash tend to go for Breguet, Blancpain, JLC, ALS, Patek, Vacheron etc and the average Rolex client prefer the sportier watches

·

I like this watch.

  • Easy to maintain (any watchmaker can service a Rolex)

  • Brand recognition

  • Good size (39mm)

Cheaper than Patek Calatrava, Vacheron Patrimony

Same price as the Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Small Seconds.

For me, I would rather get the JLC though. That's cuz I am a JLC fan.

·

An exclusive watch with an exclusive price, if it’s for you than the price is right

I have the reverse opinion... The Rolex is less formal and more sporty/assertive, which may be easier to dress down.

That said, the 2 watches (JLC and Rolex) do look to be same level, so the price on the Rolex is probably right.

·

I’m starting to feel Rolex doesn’t do it for me given the cost to what you get. I picture if I could buy any watch I want and given the choices I just see too many alternatives outside this upper price range that I would get far more enjoyment out of I mean I can technically get 2 to 3 watches that are amazing for this price and some that look and perform better

·

To me this watch is outside of Rolex's core competency, which is sports watches. If I had this kind of money for a dress watch it would be from a more prestigious watch company. JLC, Breguet, VC, ALS, etc.

It's like Cadillac making a pick up truck or Porsche making a station wagon. Just because they can sell them doesn't mean they should be making them.

Brands should stay in their lane and keep the brand identity clear.

·

I personally like this watch and this was the watch I got excited about when revealed earlier this year. It’s a hefty price tag, but in line with where I would think a precious metal watch is. I’m waiting to see it in person before making any judgement.

·

Beautiful watch and I will still argue that it is a decent value all things considered, especially when compared to the entry Calatrava.

·

It's a ridiculous price. 🤷

·

This made me sad. I LOVE the look of this watch. Had it been 5k to 10k if have thought fair price. 20k though?

·

yes, totally, however I hate Rolex in general, BUT, this is the first one I have seen that I really like. 20k ? they must be smoking some really strong --it

I hope they would release a stainless steel version of it at around $10k. As things stand, those are gold (yellow or white) , which demands certain premium over SS watches.

·

$20K for a not very interesting Rolex 🤣🤣🤣 you could get a Tissot Visodate with the same vibe for $19K less (and more history since Tissot was around over 50 years before Rolex was conceived 😉)

·

I think it is a beautiful watch but way too much money.

Can you get a Patek for $20k?

Can you get a Patek for $20k?

You sure can. Add about $5k and you can get used Pateks in mint condition all day.

Agree, I do like the look of it and agree with your logic, for a gold Rolex, about right. Not my taste, but can appreciate it on others.

·

I like the white gold black dial variant best. I do not Appreciate that there is no option to get this watch with a bracelet

·

If it came is Steel I would consider one of these .

I got this Breguet at less than half… so I don‘t think that‘s great value. It does look very nice though, especially the white gold with black dial. We‘ll see how it does on the secondary market.

I think this really highlights the problem for Rolex. At this price, there are brands with much more horological prestige. Especially in a dress watch.

I would pick the ascetics of the JLC over the Rolex personally and the question of resale I doubt would be commensurate with a JLC not sure on that one ….

·

Precious metal is actually easier to get than their steel sports watches .

·

In this price range would go for patek, vacheron etc. instead. Nice Rolex anyway

·

Like the looks, but the price...
