Question for the other cyclops haters

So I cannot stand a cyclops. It is 100000% a deal breaker despite having a decent affinity for the rolex gmt and explorer 2….has anyone tried to get a Rolex AD to remove the cyclops or swap crystals?

I would think it would persuade them that I’m definitely not a flipper since I’m killing the resale value, and that I would enjoy it much more if it simply didn’t have the cyclops.

I doubt a Rolex AD would modify a Rolex.  I suspect it might be askew of the AD agreement.  I don’t claim to know this for a fact, just that I suspect Rolex would never allow ADs to modify the product.

It can be done, but I've never tried it.

I wonder if you could ask for a custom order from rolex through an AD so it’s sanctioned or if they are really so protective of their brand image that they won’t make any accommodations

·

I really like the Cyclops as it helps me see the date now I'm old ,I have a deep sea without the date and it looks weird as if something is missing

·

Serious question: why does it have to be the AD? This is like putting a performance chip in a car, you get somebody else to do it, and to swap it back before anyone connected to the manufacturer sees it again. It's my understanding that there are aftermarket crystals for their watches, so that needn't be through official channels either.

I’d have to figure that such a request would take even longer than the current wait list situation.

I actually asked this once.  They actually laughed at me and said that they weren't going to take responsibility for screwing up someone's warranty.

Was more like if I’m going to go through the pain in the ass of acquiring a Rolex sports model I would want to get all the benefits of buying from an AD.  That being said I will completely scratch it while leaving the AD so as to get that over with.

This issue right here might be the single biggest reason that I prefer my Black Bay GMT to the GMT Master II…I mean that and the price differential between the two! 🤣

Ahhhh...we've all been there my friend.

·

As I have gotten older, I have come to appreciate a cyclops.

I did a post on this about a month ago. I had my watchmaker remove all my cyclopses from my Seiko's. My watchmaker worked at Rolex for many years and told me that's where was taught how to properly remove them. Do NOT use a torch as shown above! You will ruin your watch. Torch will heat up the gasket and oils inside.

If you want to use a the heat method you need to remove the crystal. Max did a video on WatchCrunch on removing a cyclops from a turtle. Use that as your starting point

Why not just get another GMT with no cyclops. Bo point in getting a Rolex (expensive and difficult to get) only to devaluate it. You do that with a Seiko not a Rolex IMO..

·

I removed the candy bar cyclops from my Seiko King Turtle (SRPE03)  because it seemed misaligned.

Then, I put a cyclops on my Casio Duro and I KNOW it’s misaligned. 🙄😀

Easiest solution is don't get a watch with a cyclops. They're pretty much a deal breaker for me.

·

I am with you. I despise the cyclops on a good deal of Tudor/Rolex's. I am a no date guy just for that reason. I considered buying another Tudor Sub (79090) and having the crystal swapped to get rid of the cyclops. I looked into replacement crystals. I am sure you can find a reputable watchmaker who would do it for you.

Because it is the buyers watch, they can drive over it with their car if they want. Not all of us care about resale/flipping, etc. I have never bought a watch concerned with resale. I am concerned with enjoyment—it's a finite device that is meant to be enjoyed not put in a safe. LOL

And yes I have luxury watches: Rolex 14060M, Tudor 79090, Tudor Pelagos 42mm, Tudor Pelagos 39mm, Seiko SLA 017, etc.

I like the cyclops placement on many of the huge Aragon/Android watches. Both of mine have it on the underside of the crystal. I always feel I will scrape it on some surface and chip it or break the crystal when on top. I have successfully removed them from some cheapo watches and also cracked a crystal with too much heat once.

Hi Georg.  I don’t know (I just recently joined myself) but WC is a nice place to go for a bit more in-depth watch-chat.

Same here, about a week for me. Where did you hear about WC? Ben's Watch Club on YouTube mentioned it a couple of times, so I checked it out.

Just checking out vids on YT.  And that led me here. Tried to message you so as to not hijack thread but newbs (like us) can’t message until we’ve been here for 14 days.  😀

I'm guilty of this one, I dont like the greasy feeling of the moisturizer on my hands- at all.

Wing Liang of Aragon/Android and I are friends and he absolutely does it right. It’s not the fact that it exists that destroys it for me it’s that it exists on the top side of the crystal and not the underside 😁

A lighter, a thin, disposable razor blade, two minutes and it's gone.
