What do you think of Jody (“Just one more watch”) Musgrave’s new Erebus Origin watches?

There seems to be a common consensus that the Erebus Origin “ticks a lot of boxes”. But does that make it a watch you are considering to add to your collection? Is “ticking boxes” something you look for in a watch?

I'd be buying for buying's sake. Looks a great watch for the price though & I'm sure he'll have a huge success with it.

·

Well specced, and I love Jody, but just doesn’t meet any need/desire of mine, and is too expensive to buy just to help out a guy I’m certainly rooting for.

·

I love that he made a watch, and it has everything I want on paper, but I don't like the design personally.

I do like the shade of teal and red that he chose though.

·

Not really my taste, but I hope he has success with it.

·

Near perfect? No. But that didn't stop me pre ordering one in orange.

·

Looks cool.

There are alot of divers in the market already. So I might skip this one.

·

I like divers, but I don't like to wear them all that much. I have enough already, and therefore am not excited about new dive watches.

·

I'm simply not a dive watch fan. I don't have anything about the guy or his brand, it's simply a type of watch that doesn't appeal to me. Still, I viewed his channel before, so I'll keep an eye if he decides to make a pilot/field or a dress watch.

·

Your question seemed to have smoked out all of the people who like Jody but not necessarily dive watches in the comments.

·

It’s a nice safe design, looks well made and well thought out.

It’s a good one to consider if you’re looking for a thoughtfully designed diver and want to support a microbrand that isn’t too expensive.

·

Sorry Jody for the typo in your last name.🫣 It is MUSGROVE of course.

·

Would love to get the blue dial blue bezel version. I have 2 things stopping me. More reviews needed and the quota my wife and i set for me- not filling up that 3rd watch box before 2024. As it stands i already have 3 watches paid for and coming my way before the end of november. 😆 i may not make it to christmas at this point

·

Never had heard of Erebus Watches before this post. Went and investigated and it seems to be another micro brand. This is why WatchCrunch is so good, making others aware of brands they may never heard of.

They look OK but do they regulate their movements before installing them in the case? Doing so is not mentiuoned on their Web site. The NH35 (what they use) is an OK movement but withiout regulation.... 😉

·

I voted C, but only because it doesn’t really fit my tastes. I think it’s a fantastic initiative that has everything going for it. As a YouTuber with a brand myself (nothing to do with watches), I truly hope he succeeds in this endeavour!

·

I like the look of them and I always respect someone that puts themselves out there and gives things a good as they say “ who dares wins Rodney”

It's not as if they go with anyone's outfits or uniforms that I know of either. It's really a vile colour for a watch and extremely difficult to read a purple dial underwater.

Actually.... 🤓🤣

Purple would go with my work uniform. I'm not going to tell you where I work, so I'll just blur it out:

🧐🤣

That being said, I don't want to be reminded of work when I'm not there, so "It's a NO from me, Dawg."

I can't imagine it's very legible under water, either. Maybe we will see how popular they are when he closes the pre-order window, if he makes a video about the results.

I have the same t-shirt. 😎

Image

That shirt describes just about ALL of the US workforce, on the Express (air) side, as the company appears to be making moves to phase us out and go to an all contractor model. Twenty-six years in, and I may be looking for a new job in the next few. 😑

·

First I have ever heard of them.

I worked for the UK division for exactly 2 days about 30 years ago. It was an absolute shambles and on the second day I was the only one unloading the truck. I just walked out of it back to my second job, I didn't even get paid for it.

That's awful. Here in the US, it used to be a great job (and a fun one), but that's not the story anymore. The new head honchos in charge basically said, "Screw the customers and screw the employees."

The crown guards spoil it for me. Too squared off, a bit like Jody's jaw. If it had no crown guards I would probably get one.

I agree there is something that is slightly off with the crown guards otherwise a good solid effort.

Exactly. And I don't see the point of the purple one at all. That's never going to be a thing.

As Jody is a fan of black dials I recon that‘s why the black one is the best. The other colors seem to be an afterthought or even random picks like the purple one. The shades of red and orange they chose are also not appealing to me. Green could have been a winner.

I think Jody let the masses from a Facebook group we both used to belong to get in his ear. Thistles and heather are purple... and that's the national flowers of Scotland or something, so they've been vocal about purple watches for years. It's not a good decision especially when green has been a proven winner. I also think the orange is too muted and pastelly to appeal to most people, and the red looks cheap.

Spot on. This could explain the purple one. But thistles aren’t exactly the prettiest of flowers either 😉

Great specs, value for money, everything is there if you like divers. But this one doesn't speak to me. It's too much of a tool watch aesthetic for my liking. I like bling to my watches, which is why I don't have many divers in my collection (only 3 of 12 watches and one is on the chopping block). But if this is the vibe you like, I can't see anything that would turn you off from the design or materials.

·

I can't help but think I already onw the orange dialed one...

Great specs, nice dive watch at a great price.

He seems very nice and other YouTube reviewers confirm this.

I hope he is successful with his company.

·

Would have helped to add a picture of it here for those who have not seen the video

Jody seems like a nice chap with a good and honest YouTube channel; the watch has a mostly bulletproof spec sheet, minus the NH35. I wish he went with a different movement to avoid having his watch being perceived as “just one more micro brand dive watch with an NH35 movement”.

To qualify: my collection used to comprise mainly of diver models, and I have been reducing/consolidating them over the past two years. I now have about 5 divers, if the Tudor BB GMT can be considered a dive watch. Thus, adding another watch to the lineup with plenty of competition for wrist time requires going beyond specs; it is that combination of build, design, and heritage/reputation that compels me to fetch my credit card or put one in the collection up for sale to make space.

I cannot speak about the build, having never handled the piece; design-wise, I don’t know how the Erebus origin would add to my collection, aside from the pops of colour. I’m sure many people have space for an additional colourful diver, but I don’t feel like a louder colour option is sufficient reason.

Although, credit where it is due - the way the seconds hand and indices work together is a very nice touch - I see what those guys did there, and I like it very much.

Lastly, I recognise and freely admit that I might be in a minority of people who aren’t quick to support buying a watch from a brand built up by a YouTuber who built his rep on honestly reviewing watches. I don’t doubt his integrity, and I don’t doubt his process in coming up with the watch, but like a lot of microbrands out there, I do wonder how long this project/company will last.

I wish Jody the best of luck in building Erebus into a company that lasts for decades to come!

·

Anyone else think the logo kinda reminds you of the profile of a tie-fighter?

·

I am low on white dialed divers, so I pre-ordered one. Mostly because of the reasonable price and wanting to support Dr. Jody in his watch business. Also I came to realize I don't own any microbrand watches.

·

I honestly think this a great starter watch for those getting into mechanical watches. Nothing new or revolutionary here, good first attempt. Best of luck.
