Are We REALLY Trustworthy?

I realized today that, despite only being on WC for a short time, I have been receiving the various tips and bits of advice as wholly genuine and trustworthy. As in, it hadn't crossed my mind that someone on here could knowingly suggest a bad purchase, or pass along harmful information. I guess I just saw the (mostly) non-judgemental and helpful ethos and kind of turned off my natural wariness. Like, why - or even how - could a legit watch weirdo ever steer another one astray? Is this accurate, or am I in a "pink cloud"/honeymoon period, here? Stories optional, but appreciated.

Don’t take any of my advice!!

You take the good, you take the bad, You take them both and there you have the facts of life.

Like anything, find those with similar tastes and ask them the why behind the collection. Also, find the person who did the totally opposite and also ask why. That should give you a great perspective, whether affirmative or eye opening.

I talk up my Islander watch with zero benefit to me. I just love the watch so much that I want to spread the enjoyment to others

I think forums like this provide affirmation for thoughts you already have. E.g. someone sharing their love for a watch you have eyeing for a while will draw your attention, but you won’t click into a post about a watch you dislike. So don’t worry about getting “led astray”, you were already “straying” from the start. 😂

Absolutely. I see it all the time. That watch is too big for you and the enablers are too nice to tell you the truth. And as @IceCreamMan correctly notes, you don't need another watch. You really don't even want it, at least not for the right reasons. Trust me.

Great place to check and chat watch!! I even won one from @TonyXXX a few months after joining. Happens sometimes around here along with other craziness. You just missed out on the yearly 1 Watch challenge or 1WC. Don't miss the Tuesday Bits, our own news letter and up to dates. Welcome to the crunch🤝 we get enough of us from MN we can do a meet up.

This is a fairly rare place in the social media world in that it stays positive and it is fun to be helpful, I think the lot here mostly tries to be helpful.

Well, yeah, most of my previous forum experiences involved lurking on menswear sites. And while I could see that eventually people gained acceptance/community there, at first they could expect a lot of hazing and ridicule, etc. Turned me off from ever participating. This site does have a more positive vibe than that, for sure.

Good points. And there's certainly representation from every sphere of interest, so plenty to learn.

There is an element of self-selection, or grouping with like-minded people, I'm sure. I do feel like one thing I've been enjoying has been - as you describe - checking out those posts which offer something different than I'm personally pursuing.

That's a striking dial/bezel combo.

Forget watches, and just use your phone. 👍

Pretty much everyone on watch crunch is here because they like watches, so the info given typically will be far more accurate than elsewhere. So when people vouch for quality, accuracy, customer service etc I'll typically trust them

There is also a genuine passion for watches here, as opposed to for price tags (recent poll about value of collection showed a pretty evenly spread price bracket) which is why I prefer here to other platforms

But there will always be bad faith players, smaller community harms reliability and has the risk of being an echo chamber (imo r/watches is obsessed with small watches), and naturally personal taste will always affect things (post from the other week showed how split people were about quartz). Plus always remember that anecdotal evidence is just that

Personally I'm always just as fascinated by bad watches as I am good watches. Ben's watch club dissing mvmt watches was what got me to appreciate good watches

There's a phrase I use with my team all the time..."trust but verify"

If you wholly rely on someone blindly, then you get the results you deserve...they will range from very good to very bad.

There is enough information available to test the "opinions" and perceived "knowledge" of the members of this group.

So when one of them tells you that you can take a watch that is rated for 30M WR into the pool...and if you don't verify that (you cannot do that and expect a long life for your watch)...then when your watch stops running because the movement is seized up with rust...you get the result you earned.

Same with purported collectors who are YT personalities...don't believe them to be experts until you've verified enough to rely on them. You get the nonsense myths passed on like the WatchGuys collector who mistakenly claimed that Doxa watches were not made in Switzerland because he failed to perform relatively simple research.

Or a member of this community who said that Squale watches were made in China because their website ended in .ch (which is, of course, Switzerland not China and could be verified in less than 5 seconds on a Google search).

A went with "Mixed Bag". Why? There are brand loyalists that swear by that brand, insist it is the best (value, function, etc) available however, your results may vary. Take mechanical Seikos for instance. A lot of people love them, swear by them, yet my exerience with Seiko mechanicals is negative. I just wore a Citizen mechanical yesterday and it performed much better than that "special" Seiko I bought last year, the finishing is better and it cost less, a lot less even at MSRP, and I got it on sale.

So, imho, advice is a mixed bag.

I have always wondered, how much did the guys who started MVMT get when they sold out to the Movado Group (I think it was}? Maybe that is the answer. Start a watch company, get some traction, then sell out for 7-8 figures ($) and retire. 😂

But really, their watches are OK and appropriate for their price point.

·

I suppose it is possible for someone to intentionally steer you in the wrong direction, but I haven’t really seen that during my time here or in other watch fora. I’ve observed that people who want to be mean are generally more direct in their approach and wouldn’t be bothered to take the time and effort required to convince you that bad advice is good.

However, most of what you find here and elsewhere is not fact, but opinion, from a group of enthusiasts who may not be as knowledgeable as they think they are. Also, people have different tastes in watches and different experiences in this hobby, all of which can affect the advice they provide to others.

In short, we’re generally trying to be helpful, even when we actually aren’t being helpful.

MVMT was made by a guy who understood marketing and social media really well, and most brands watch should learn from them

I disagree with you however about the price. They were way overpriced for the poor quality, to the point their earlier models were a near outright scam. Post movado their watches are meh, but they offer the pre acquisition listing as well, so unless you know when the model was made, its a coin flip of either mediocre or outright garbage

Take anything with a grain of salt I suppose 🤷‍♂️

The hive brain is usually pretty good. I picked mixed bag because you are not relieved of your duty to conduct your own research, and make your own decision, the hive brain is just a part of the process and not the final word.

·

This is a refuge for me to talk about this stuff. There is no one around me I can discuss this with. I might as well be using smoke signals or carrier pigeons.
