The ST1901 and the watches they are within

Are they worth it?

I imagine many here have something with that movement...likely the 1963(?) chinese military watch.

Is it any good?

I'm feeling real tempted by this

It's on sale for 199usd on Seestern's site right now

Should I pick one up....200$ mech chrono that looks like a Breitling that had relations with a Milgaus

Yay for me. The ST1901 is part of the ST19 series movement originally purchased from Swiss Chronograph movement maker Venus in the 1960s. Venus sold this older technology movement including all the hardware to the Chinese in order to fund their R&D for newer movement. All The equipments were moved from Switzerland to TianJin China till today. There are quite a few blogs, histories, and reviews from the net. Here is one of them. https://kaminskyblog.com/2017/09/12/seagull-st19-chronograph-movement-review-brief-history/

I have the Seagull 1963 with mineral glass and exhibition case back. I Just Love it! ❤️

i'm guessing asking "should I" here generaly the answer is yes

I have a Geckota with the ST19 movement. It keeps really good time, and the "action" of the chrono pushers is really nice and smooth.  Considering the price point, I feel it offers good value, however it doesn't have an overly robust feel. One thing to be aware of is that If you accidentally push the reset pusher with the chrono running, when you press the start/stop pusher again, the chronograph resets.

Actually not true!! The response is not always to pull the trigger. I posted whether I should get the PANERAI Submersible eSteel 44mm. And it was highlighted the lug-to-lug was too large for me. 👍 https://www.watchcrunch.com/Jt0909/posts/submersible-quarantaquattroesteel-blu-profondo-should-i-pull-the-trigger-11092

but yeah, mine was more an exception 🤣

Yes!!

I have one, bought while I had a few too many. I wish I would have bought it with a more vintage style dial.

·

I think the question I need validated is racing Chrono or pilots chrono? Lol

·

Aaaannd I bought the blue dial pilot chrono...

@Ichibunz is a terrible influence 😉

Oh so true, stay away from him, he'll have you buy everything that ticks 🤣

·

Yes!

Lots of really great references with the ST1901 and its variants. I would recommend getting the swan neck upgrade if it's available.

Here are a few in my collection:

There is also this:

I should add: don't feel under time pressure to hit the trigger, because the watch is on sale at that website at $200. On AliExpress that is kind of the ceiling price for non-diver-chronos anyway, so - unless the dollar really crashes under inflationary pressure - you can get that watch for that price on Ali anytime.

I bought this from Seestern and I’m obsessed with it. No regrets at all

You know damn well the answer’s both.

You know damn well the answer’s both.

Well yeah... eventually

Seagull movements aren't as nice as most of the Swiss movements but they get the job done at a fraction of the cost.  They are interchangeable and  disposable.  Actually at $200.00 if the watch fails you can just replace the watch.  I have the tourbillion and have a chronograph on the way.  Highly recommend.

·

thanx for the input all

I picked up a blue dial variant direct from seestern and couldn’t be happier. The first watch delivered (about 3 weeks with standard shipping) had some problems; minute dial was non responsive. I was provided a return label and had a perfectly working replacement in about 3 weeks. couldn’t be more surprised by their service at this price point (and coming all the way from Hong Kong).

As far as the watch goes, I have two gripes that I’ve not heard from others. The first is that the crystal really needs some AR coating. The second is that the indices lume is sufficient but much stronger than the hands which are very weak.

I have never really been into busy dials or chronos. I think these watches are perfect because I can enjoy a mechanical chronograph without spending $1500+ and these being handwind, are generally much thinner than other entry level options.

·

Amazing value proposition for a handwound mechanical chronograph! Here is my GoodSpeed Sonoma 😎👍🏼

There are a lot of them producing it with varying issues with QC. Sea-Gull is the best one and they charge more. Most chinese issues come down to too much dirt and not enough oil.
