Rugged and Durable field watch

I've been in the market for a small-ish (sub-40mm) rugged type tool/field watch which works well on a NATO and preferably has a date window which is important for my use case. I've been eyeing the Archimede Protect 39 but the Formex field is also in my radar. I've also seen the Boldr around and it looks like a nice affordable alternative. Do you guys have any other recommendations or experiences with these brands?

I am a proud Formex Field owner. :) have a good day.

·

I’ve owned a couple of Archimede Outdoors and they are great watches. Definitely would be my choice of the options you gave

·

That formex looks super nice

·

I like the Formex. I don't have one but it's on my list.

·

The Formex is super cool. Boldr has some cheaper titanium options, they’re nice but the bead-blast finish will scratch if you’re hard on it. That said I do like mine a lot

·

I really like the Formex. Haven't tried the others and don't own the Formex but it seemed a good fit for me.

Have had the formex for two years - love it

·

RZE and Vaer have some good options in this area imo

·

Formex for me too

·

I have a boldr and it was my most worn watch of 2023. It's a rugged piece for sure

·

Rugged field/tool watch = Marathon

·

Formex is a little bit cheaper and lighter..the outdoor is really nice as well and has its own charm..I always had a soft spot for the outdoor..the sahara version would be my pick!..the only thing I think elevates the former is they make their own butterfly clasp which I heard nothing but good things about. Cheers!

I’ve handled most all of the Formex line, since I did photography for the brand, and everything feels really high quality. I liked the look/feel of this field watch a lot!

I love my Formex field 👍

I tried the Formex at a fair next year and it was an instant crush. The finish on the case is incredible, you barely feel it on the wrist because it's so light, sandwich dial is amazing... On nato it's perfect fit even on a small wrist (mine is 6.5 inch), and the leatger strap has a carbon buckle with micro adjust. Raphael is a cool guy, if this count. Oh and it told me the watch is in fact 40mm, but they were "ashamed" of the mistake on the website and press book so they never changed the information.

Don't know the others, I was eyeing an Archimede few years back, it's a serious and historical brand

BOLDR venture (updated 2023)

Reduce the thickness to 12mm so it’s better with NATO, updated the movement

I have the same sized wrist and I've had second thoughts on the formex because of the size. Good to know it fits well. It would be great if you could share photos on wrist.

Unfortunately I don't own it and didn't take pictures when tried it, hope someone here with the same wrist will do

That Formex is fire! The strap would likely make you forget about a NATO as well

·

Boldr is cheap and it feels it. I’ve owned one and it’s a good watch and great value for money. But if you have the funds for a Formex then for sure I’d go with that. Different class of watch in my opinion.

·

Give some consideration to the Citizen Promaster Tough Titanium. You get a tonne of watch for the price.

Formex 🎯

·

Gotta say I like the look of the formex. I have looked at Boldrs. They have some nice designs.

·

I like my Outdoor 39. The case feels like it could survive contact with a tank:

Potential downside is that the “hooded” lugs mean it takes an 18mm strap, even though the width at the case is 20mm. As you can see here:

This means it could look a bit odd on a nato strap I think.

·

I’ve got a Formex Field and love it. Possibly my most comfortable watch. I got my Father in law a Boldr Venture as he wanted a watch he could wear when playing tennis and he loves it and wears it all the time, but I think Formex has it beat.

I have both the archimede outdoor and formex field (and I used to have a Hamilton kfa 42). I like the formex the most though the archimede is really nice. You'll have more strap options for the formex and I think it wears slightly more comfortably.

Oem leather 18mm lug widens to the case width fast.
