What does your watch say?

I just saw a tv show where a spy says she knows a guy is a fraud, and not rich, because his watch is "ticking". "Rich guys' watches don't tick, they sweep".

What do you think? Can you really tell anything by the watch someone is wearing?

It's called Slow Horses. It's on Apple TV, and it's a spy drama based on books by Mick Herron (British).

·

In isolation, no. No single bit of info is a smoking gun. You need to have a few correlating tendencies to point in a direction.

·

Well, if the guy is wearing a watch... maybe that could be one of us? :)

Great show! Recommended for Gary Oldman fans.

·

Not quite, I believe the man makes the watch, not the other way around 😉

·

I hate that something we're knowledgeable about ruins a show, especially a mystery or when the plot revolves around it, feels like the showrunners should have done a bit more research on this.

·

Good show, but sad cliche thanks to Jay-Z. A watch says nothing. How one carries themselves says way more. To stereotype; Do a lot of rich a-holes drive blinker-less BMWs and wear Rolexes? Yes. Do BMW and Rolex make awesome products? Absolutely. It’s not the product it’s the human.

·

My watch says I’m a legend.

I would be ticking one day sweeping the next 😂

·

Lol well, typically I'd say they're right (but they're clearly not a watch collector)... pieces like the AP Royal Oak Quartz, or any of the GS quartz pieces are very nice and in most cases cost more than the average Joe is willing to pay.

·

Damn! All my hopes of graduating to a higher caste have been dashed!

·

Great series, just finished Season 2.  For the most part my watches that tick cost more than the ones that sweep lol.

·

Slow horses, Louisa -  ‘that’s what you pay for’ and she did specify the watch the dodgy Russian was wearing.
Its out of date knowledge -- he could have had a fake that sweeps easy enough these days — but it was also in keeping of the character that he would deliberately wear a fake just to stick it to MI5 in that set up. Louisa knows that too, she knows it’s deliberate like everything else.

The books are rather good too, but some improvements were made to this season (dead lions) with a view to the overarching story.

As to real world?

It would take more to tell a fake these days, and you can no longer tell the rich by their watches alone — saying that, Alan Sugars on the box in a Daytona by the looks of it, and I remember asking a few years back on Twitter if anyone knew anywhere he could lay his hands on a Batman.

My preferences have evolved.  Now I prefer the simplicity and grab n go ability of quartz.  They maintain power and accuracy . My next aspiration is seiko's 5x53 movement... the ultimate set it and forger it.

·

I bet she never met Bill Gates and his Casio Duro. 😉

·

Hmm. One of my watches doesn’t really say much. All of my watches say, I have an addiction and probably need therapy… which I’ll think about attending right after I procure my next acquisition.😈

·

Goddammit.  Gotta subscribe to another streaming service now.

Gary Oldman was absolutely phenomenal in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," so I gotta watch this series now!

·

looks the book series Slough House up

This is either early, as in very early in the Cold War or after the Swiss course corrected from the Quartz crisis.

Either it's from the novels or from the screenwriters, somebody is certainly not a watch nerd or the character is not a watch nerd.

Usually the time.

Sounds like something my wife would say 😜

Great show "Slow Horses" - that one was really well done.

Me - I wear a different watch each day - so that'll keep 'em guessing.

Am I the VC Overseas in 18k guy or am I the Hamilton Khaki Field Watch guy or maybe the San Martin Rainbow Series in Sky Blue...no pinning me down.

However, I do wear my best watches to board meetings...so I guess I cave a little to peer pressure 😉

·

My Dan Henry 1975 (mechaquartz) sweeps... I must be rich!!!

·

It's a common mistake to equate the display of specific possession with wealth. Rich people can afford to display their wealth, a lot of them decide not to do it.

·

Maybe quartz just ticks her off…

sorry, had to.
but shes wrong

I don't remember it in the books, but I did notice that Jackson Lamb (the main spy character who is super old school) is wearing a Casio f91w... Maybe it was actually a watch lover who wrote the screen play and wanted to get our attention on WC 😁

They certainly got our attention alright.

I can tell that I'm missing out on a "friend" and their "generous donation" to me if they're wearing a Royal Oak. 😉😉😉

Depends. I've known guys with £30k who spent £25k on a Patek. Also known guys with £5M who only rock Seiko's. But the reverse is also true.

Basically don't judge a book by its cover. every circumstance is different.
