To Ranger or not to Ranger..

When this watch was first released it did nothing for me. At all.

Yet I tried it on the other day just browsing in my AD and now I can’t stop thinking about it. At £2,420 it just makes it that much more tempting.

Let me know what you guys think of It.

Only you can decide if it’s right for you. For me, I like it. All the complaints I’ve heard about it seem to boil down to “it’s not an Explorer”. The numbers look funny because they aren’t Explorer numbers. It’s too big because it’s bigger than an Explorer. It doesn’t have shiny surfaces or applied indices…like the Explorer.

I think it succeeds as a field watch, which is what it is. It’s easy to read, unobtrusive, and (I assume) solidly built.

I bought one yesterday.  I absolutely love it. Seeing it in the flesh really sold me on it and it offers lots of value for what you get.  The people that complain about it basically want it to be a modern explorer or BB41/36. That isn't what this watch is or is meant to be. Honestly to me it's a luxury field watch. And if that's your thing then this is a great watch. The explorer started out that way and morphed into something else entirely. Honestly, in my opinion, this is what the explorer should be.

I believe this is a solid made watch that will grow on you over time. I have the new Explorer and it would be a bit too redundant in some aspects, specially spending too much money on watches, but should this have been released before the Explorer 124270 I would have bought it. 70 hours power reserve, anti magnetic and utilitarian. It's more on the tool side than the dressier environment, but I think it's quite alright. I would like to see it in 38 and with full red seconds hand, but well.

I get that. And I’ve never been a fan of the Exp1 so I don’t compare or care for that.
I’m judging it on it’s own merit and its not the normal style I would go for but I think that’s what’s attracting me.

Exactly that. If I could make one or 2 minor adjustments this watch would be just right. For example 38mm, white indices and numerals rather than this off white. The yellow from the BBPro rather than red on the seconds hand and maybe an applied Tudor logo. I’m not fussed about the printed dial otherwise.

It's a great watch for what it was intended for.  It's a pleasure to wear and it flies well under most peoples radar.  The vast majority of YouTube reviewers haven't worn the watch for any amount of time.  The ones that have worn it seem to like it.   I wouldn't trade it for my Blue 58 which has the same movement.  Fortunately, I don't have to choose.  Trying to pick between the Ranger, the Black Bay 58 and the new titanium 39 wouldn't be easy for someone who doesn't have a dive watch.

That's a really good point that a lot of people want it to be a BB41/36. I think I commented on your post yesterday. I haven't seen the Ranger in real life but the photos don't quite do it for me. I have a BB41 that I love and was kind of glad actually that the Ranger was quite different than the BB41 so I wouldn't regret my purchase haha! It's a good thing that these watches aren't super similar.

If you're not comparing it to a Rolex, I think there's a lot to like.  It's definitely a watch I would get were I in the market for a field watch.

The answer is always Ranger. It will make you strong. It will add vitality to you. It grows your chest hair, add sperm count and sperm activity to the roof and 1001 more benefits. Buy one!

·

i think its a good watch but dial proportion is a little too big to the rest of the watch for me, but if you like it then you should go for it. have you consider smiths  everest? 😀

I bought one. Very comfortable on the wrist and I like the dial and features. I've been looking for a new field watch for a while. I thought about a lot of different watches and tried on several of those but liked the Ranger the best in the end. If you like it and can afford it, go for it!

·

I thought about this one myself. Most people say it's dull and boring but probably a watch you need to see in the flesh to make a decision.

like that one a lot but it's not easy to get one of those.

I was pretty sure I wanted one and seeing it in person definitely sold me.

·

I say pick it up. If you can’t get it out of your mind that means it’s a fit.

·

I love that watch.

·

It's awesome and if I had the funds would buy.

·

I like it a lot. I'd buy one if I could afford it lol. I like the dial. I don't find it to be boring at all, I mean I love my 556i and that's about as boring as it gets I feel. I don't think people's complaints about the dial are really valid. This watch is not supposed to be an Explorer. It's not supposed to be a "tool" BB58 or Pelagos. It is supposed to be bland. If you don't like that, you're just not into bland watches. And that's okay.

·

I'm with you... the #tudorranger grows on me the more I see it and at that price point it seems like an excellent entry into the brand without purchasing the ubiquitous #tudorblackbay. If it speaks to you and you can afford it, go for it!

I have the new Ranger as next on my ‘list’.

Get it….

I don’t think it’s gonna happen for me pal. I was offered the Pelagos39 and turned that down too. I’ve decided to wait for the BBPro now..

I don’t know why I can’t get over the line with Tudor even tho I generally like the watches. Something always holds me back

Because it’s not a Rolex? That’s the usual sticking point for some.

I mean, if Rolex and Tudor had no connection would Tudor be mentioned in the same breath? Who knows.

I find the BBPro too noisy but then I don’t like the Explorer II - each to their own :)

I hope you find what you are looking for!

I don’t think it’s that. To be honest while I was in the AD with both watches in hand, Rolex didn’t come to mind.
I actually think it’s the hype around Tudor that sets the expectations too high. I need to cut down on the clickbait YouTube reviews I think 😂😂

Just a heads up that apparently there are some QC issues with the Ranger. I had to send mine back almost immediately because the watch kept stopping. Not only was I not getting COSC performance or 70 hours of power reserve, but I didn't even get a working watch. I spoke to another sales person at my AD who said she had another customer return the watch with the same issues. I'm now waiting an unknown period for warranty service on a watch I just bought. If you pick up a Ranger, make sure you buy from an AD so you get the warranty in case you get a lemon like some of us have.
