Omega Speedmaster Professional

Why is it such a coveted watch? What makes it so special? Give me your thoughts on why this watch should be part of a collection.

For me it is a great GADA (go anywhere, do anything) watch. Sporty, Classic and can be dressed up or down. Very versatile watch!

In my opinion it is hype. So many people post about the Speedmaster and how much they like theirs, that it just snowballs.

Also partially because it is actually really good. As you say; it has good versatility and has good pedigree.

I had one and didn’t keep it for very long because I just didn’t find it as special as I had expected. Just my opinion…….

That’s the full gold one. That one is real special. Although I like the black dial better than gold. Is that yours? (That’s not basic 😂)

Agreed, I can’t justify owning it when I don’t care for chronos anyway…

Hype and vintage look. Its a very old design they will not let die. Like the old guys getting little red sports cars.

·

I always thought it was all hype until I tried on my friends moonwatch....3 weeks later I bought it and It's been on my wrist at some point, every single day at some time during the day....2 things.... wrist presence and fit.... it's marvelous

·

It's also a strap monster!

For me...

  • Classic Chronograph look

  • Space race connection (I've always been fascinated with space)

  • Current underdog brand to Rolex in the luxury brand category (love an underdog)

  • Racing connection (my family ran a race car team in the local circuit and almost went big time if their stories are to be believed)

·

A few things make it special for me. Classic, timeless design that will always look good. Strap monster. The space stories.

I wouldn’t say there is much hype to the watch when you can go into any AD and buy it at retail today - unlike most Rolex sports watches. I got a hefty discount on my 3861.

The NASA link, although interesting because I like anything to do with space, is way overused and irritating after awhile. It’s not something I considered important when I was deciding whether to buy it or not.

Studio Underd0g giving you sideeye for calling Omega an underdog 😂

Here's the thing, nobody needs a Speedmaster. Me personally, I like how it looks, I like mechanical things/art, it's pretty damn durable and it has a pretty cool story behind it. Mind you, I got mine back in the 90s before the vintage craze, and old Speedies were cheap by today's standards. Not sure I would buy one now tbh.

Lol, I get what you're saying, but in the lens of Omega vs. Rolex, they are the underdog.

·

I said this in another post but I'd always been "meh" about it until I received my PD homage version. Now I understand, it's just a great design that wears well and has high contrast for easy reading. 👍

For me a watch can't be a gada unless it meets two of the following criteria:

  • Respectable water resistance (so a chrono would need to be able to operate with the chronos pushed down orrr have screwdown pushers)

  • Adjustable bracelet

Aside from the latest models none of them have an adjustable bracelet.

Secondly the water resistance is important because a true gada I don't want to worry about whatever I'm doing and I can't abide with a 5k watch getting ruined by an accidental pusher press.

·

I don’t think that the Speedmaster is more special than any other watch, nor do I believe it is a requisite for any collection. Having said all that, I personally really like the Speedy and have been saving towards one for awhile now. I have a greater affinity for chronographs in general, and feel the Moonwatch is one of the most well-proportioned and beautiful black-dial watches ever designed. 🍻

·

For me, as a child of the early space race, it’s been the connection to NASA and the Apollo program. The fact that NASA overlooked having a timepiece spec’d and built specifically for space/lunar conditions and found an existing watch that could meet the demands is impressive to my engineering mind. Alas, beyond my price range even before it became such an iconic collectible.

·

I think there was a very similar post a few days ago on this topic. Again, there are other Omega watches out there that I would rather have. Nice watch, but as noted above there is too much Speedy hype. Chronos and Tachymeters are overkill but for pilots and aliens. Give me a Bond Seamaster any day.

·

I’m a fence sitter, I like it(don’t love it). I love the history behind it but not particularly a space race enthusiast. Love the legibility but not into chrono’s enough to warrent a second look. I recognize it’s horological significance and I’m fine with looking at friends’ speedies and just being happy for them. Just like I’d be happy for you if you pick one up😁

I Was able to see and handle the sapphire sandwich and the silver snoopy ones while on a trip to japan. They look quite handsome. I have cons keeping me from pulling the trigger though- manual wind, low water resist, and no date.

I know there's the speedmaster 38mm to address all those concerns but i wish they made a speedy professional case and dial but with the speedy 38mm "updated" specs. Maybe one day.

Okay, let's call it a city dweller GADA? B/c if we're being real 99% of the time many of us are't touching water. It's GADA enough for most.

·

I love them, they are special. I have 4. I am holding out for an Ed White 321 for my “traditional” one.

Nobody needs anything other then a cheap 3 hander to tell time (or heavens forbid an applewatch). We get watches for history, style, mechanics, finishing, etc.

·

I'm a Speedmaster fan for a few reasons, most already expounded on by others. But I'll throw my $0.02 in. I'm drawn to classic/iconic timepieces, and the Speedmaster is indisputably an classic/iconic watch, both for its design and for its connection to perhaps mankind's greatest achievement in the field of exploration, the Moon landings. And for me the Speedy was my first true Swiss luxury watch purchase, so it'll always have a place in my watchbox.

·

I don't think it should be necessarily. I have tried it over and over and it doesn't work for me. Not disagreeing it's an excellent watch, just wasn't what I wanted on my wrist.

·

Iconic for sure. Does it need to be in every collection? No. There are some that insist a “true” watch enthusiast’s collection should include, the Speedy, Casio F91W, Hamilton Khaki field… To that I say nonsense.

Your collection is yours. If don’t have a chronograph and you want a chronograph in your collection, then the Speedmaster is a great choice.

·

I was gifted the "moon watch" because I have one of the largest collections of space exploration artifacts in the country so it was first and foremost a NASA thing.

I knew very little about watches when I received it from my wife however researching what an awesome gift I'd been given is what led me down the rabbit hole we all now share. While no watch is a must for every collection the Speedmaster is essential to mine.

·

I was thinking about buying my first luxury watch but didn't have a clue where to start. My dad and grandad had Omegas so I walked into the boutique and started trying on watches. Aqua Terra was too flashy, Seamaster was too big, and then I tried on the Speedy and it just clicked.

Lots of detail but wasn't overpowering. Proportions were perfect (even though it was a 42mm). The history of the watch as told by the advisor. I kept looking around for the next few months but the Speedy just felt right, so ended up buying it as my first luxury watch.

Buying subsequent watches has been a nightmare because around that price range of around £5,000 it's hard to get such a complete package.

·

Forgot about the history, the hype, the comparison to the Daytona or if it's a GADA watch or not. That gold Speedmaster with the green dial is the shit. I'm a fan. Wear it with a big smile.

·

Looks, quality, and the 🌖

·

It’s gorgeous 👌🏻

The green on gold combo simply works. It’s has a royal flair to it in my opinion 💚

Love the Speedy and in particular with gold version you have here. Looks great and has some real history #omega
