Does the perfect watch exist?

Collecting watches, and having many different ones, often feels extravagant to me, not to mention being expensive. I would love a one watch collection if I could find the perfect watch. However, for me at least, I don’t think it exists. I buy watches I like but none is perfect. Maybe it is a smidgen too small or a smidgen too big, or it looks great from some angles but not all. Or perhaps the dial looks great in some lighting but is disappointing and muted in others. Or then again, perhaps the watch is great in every respect but for the hands, or something about the dial markings irrirates ( I don’t like the choice of font for the 3/6/9 on an Explorer, for example, but love the watch in all other respects). And all that’s before one considers what’s under the bonnet, or functional characteristics like water resistance.

What do others think? Have you found perfection?

There is not a single perfect watch for all of humanity.

There is a watch that is perfect for you, and one for me and everyone else. Yet, even that perfect watch may have flaws since all of us cannot afford what we feel might be the perfect watch.

·

That Rolex looks pretty perfect to me. Though the cost of that watch is multiple times the value of my entire collection. I’m a closet hoarder.

·

A friend of mine wears an Explorer everyday, working, camping, playing with kids, and calls it “perfect” because it never looks out of place.

Watch is not a hobby for him and he doesn’t look elsewhere.

Perfection doesn’t exist for watch nerds like us, so you don’t find one in here😂

No.

A one watch collection is like a wife.... you gotta love it first above all others.

By the time we found that so-called perfection, its probably time for us to quit this hobby, too…

Without question, my Explorer is perfection. It's also not my only watch, because I enjoy variety. But it is truly perfection

The perfect watch is the epitome of possimpible.

There truth is that my square g shock is perfect. It wears light, has all the functions I need, keeps perfect accuracy including sync to an atomic clock. The rest is jewelry.

·

Explorer is close to perfect. My aquanaut is close to perfect. But even those I’d prefer something dressier for a big formal day..

·

I think of watches as accessories so perfection is not really needed in my collection. I put them in a category.

My comfortable watch looks good on anything light weight take it and go:

I settle for perfect for the occasion.

I think my Tudor Ranger may be perfect for me. I have a lot of other watches and I think I wear the Tudor 50% of the time and the rest of the collection combined for 50%. I do swap the straps occasionally but it’s almost always on it’s nearly perfect bracelet.

I've found a kind of perfection, or at least something I'm pretty bloody happy with, in a few areas which has curtailed my collecting in some areas. My Bond Seamaster, for example, scratched that itch on a few levels and now when I see other Seamasters - even really cool ones that have also been in Bond - I'm kind of 'meh' about them. The itch, for me, is scratched. Similarly, my Tudor Heritage Ranger... absolute heaven. 41mm, to me, is the perfect size. And the Explorer vibes! For nothing like Explorer money! Again, the itch is scratched. I've got zero interest in any other Explorer-esque watches; even a Rolex itself. So, in these areas, again, it's hard to call it 'perfection', but I'm certainly not looking in these areas any more for watch ideas.

For me there’s a difference between perfection and suitability as a one-watch collection. I can think a watch is perfect but also not right for every occasion. When I say a watch is perfect it just means I would t change a single thing on it. I feel that way about only two watches that I own, the GMT Master II BLRO on Jubilee and the Explorer II Polar (226570). I wouldn’t change anything on either watch. I think they are perfect. But I also enjoy wearing different watches for different occasions, and just to have variety, so I wouldn’t be interested in just one watch, although I kind of wish it was what I wanted. 😅

What is a Timber Cruiser? What does that refer to?

I think a modular watch, like that one on Kickstarter (cant remember the name), where you can remove the bezel and apply a "cap" or "blanking plate" to hide the ratcheting mechanism. This would allow you to have a smooth bezel look for formal or work wear, and then you can attach the dive bezel to use in "tool watch mode."

The idea that immediately sprang to mind is a watch like the Explorer that the OP has pictured, except it has the ability to attach the dive timer bezel. That way, if you were to hypothetically have to choose a "one watch collection," it could pull double duty as a tool and dress watch.

Love this piece! Great choice IceMan

·

yes: it‘s whatever i’m wearing that day.

and also no: it’s whatever i’m looking at as my next purchase.

·

I found my perfect watch in the Seiko sur307;

  1. Perfect size (40mm) for my 7" wrist/6'4" stature

  2. Perfect thinness at 8.5mm

  3. Perfect LTL at 20mm for strap changes

  4. Clean dial

  5. Date complication

  6. Perfect LUME!!!

  7. Sapphire crystal

  8. Perfect mix of polished/brushed surfaces

  9. and

  10. Bar WR

With the addition of the solid bracelet I "borrowed" from one of my presage watches, its the one I grab everyday and still gaze upon in admiration. It's the one I would grab if my house caught fire. Then again I'd probably be already wearing it 😁

·

I'd like a round TV shaped square face, possibly like the Ventura or Poljot Stadium. The face should be white with plain silver hands on a blue dial with Breguet pointers. Sub seconds and chrono on a plain porcelain dial with hand-guilloche finishing. Automatic quartz movement, obviously.

I don’t know, even with the rubber strap, I think that Aquanaut would feel at home at a black tie affair.

Yeah its called a 36mm OP no date :) don’t own one , tried one on , big big mistake haha, I am obsessed with that watch in White ,Blue ,Black then Silver in that order . Damn, to me it would be a GADA , for me …

Me too, 😢. I already have too many watches, but I too am obsessed with getting one.

·

My last post is about this topic 😊 I don't think anything is perfect. But I think you can decide to be or work on becoming content. And that might be even better?

·

I do not have a Rolex, but I do have an Islander Manhasset and the Islander/TGV collab.... both were a fraction of the price of the Rolex and I love them...... however to be fair, I'd love a real Rolex Explorer.... I believe it is the ultimate 1 watch collection candidate

I own both of those offerings from Rolex, and I agree both of them are about as much watch as one could reasonably hope for. Enjoy them!
