Opinion: Travel with multiple watches?

Opinions (be nice, I know asking for opinions can go wrong sometimes 😇)

I’m going on vacation soon. Will be in San Francisco and Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur area. I‘m Wearing my Sub because it’s a workhorse and can go casual to dressy. I’d really like to take another watch so I can change up for nice dinners or lunches, but, I’m concerned about traveling with a watch I won’t be wearing. I have some nice watches and I’d love to show them off in NorCal.

what do you all do when u travel? Take multiple, or, rely on my old standby?

Thanks.

I haven't been doing any travel recently (pandemic, blah blah blah), but it might not hurt to at least bring one "beater" along with your Sub. While the Sub is certainly capable of wearing multiple hats for various occasions, I'm not sure I'd want to go to a hotel gym or pool with that on...or if that's not your thing, even just not to have something quite so flashy on your wrist while doing some site-seeing (where you might come off as an obvious tourist target...not that I imagine SF or those NorCal areas are hot spots for watch theft like London apparently is). My fear in carrying a whole roll of nice watches is where you'd safely store them when you're not wearing them...not sure how comfortable I'd be even just putting them in the hotel safe. Just my .02 of course.

Thanks that makes sense. I wear my sub as my everyday watch. I know that may sound elitist but I wear my watches for fun, not really as investments. A sub can go from the gym to the pool to a nice dinner. (Ugh, I’m afraid I’m sounding arrogant) I was considering my Reverso or Gondolo as a second watch, for dinners out. I think NorCal is pretty affluent, so I think these watches won’t be out of place. I do have them all well insured, so, theft would be very upsetting, but, I’m covered for cost.

i do usually take 2-3 watches on my trip. but from what i heard recently its a dangerous time to wear a luxury watch, so for now just be careful and try not to wear something luxury or resembled any luxury watch

Wow, those are some nice pieces to choose from. Sounds like it'd be more fun at the very least to bring another option other than the Sub to change things up. Maybe the better question is whether you think the JLC or Gondolo would pair better with more with your lunch/dinner outfits that you plan on taking with you!

·

Traveling right now, brought a work watch (Seiko turtle) and my Speedmaster.  I always lock em up when not wearing.  I acquired two watches since I have been on travel.   Always bring more than one depending on length and purpos  of travel. Your JLC is very nice.

·

I take multiple watches.  That Reverso is such a class piece.  I wouldn't be caught dead wearing that beater dive watch even amongst the homeless in SF.

·

My only concern would be what to do with what I'm not wearing.  As long as you have a secure place to leave watches you aren't wearing, I'd take whatever you want.

·

I bring two. A GADA watch (usually my Omega Aqua Terra) and something a bit more robust, like a Citizen diver or a G-Shock just in case I'm going to do something active or if I am going to a neighborhood where I think the Omega might be a too ostentatious.

·

I agree with what @thekris said.  I am contemplating this very "issue" myself.  I'm heading up to NYC next month for the WindUp and WatchTimes events, and to meet some WatchCrunchers IRL of course!.  So naturally I want to take a few of my favorite pieces to optimize the nerding out.  But I do get nervous about leaving the piece(s) I'm not wearing in my room while I am out and about.  My plan is to take two, hang the do not disturb sign on my door, utilize the safe in my room, and hope that is sufficient to provide some piece of mind throughout the day.

My thoughts on this do change daily though.  I mean, I can't wear the same watch to the WindUp fair AND the WatchTimes event, can I?  It just feels wrong.

·

I definitely would take an extra watch or two. But that also depends on how you can store them on your accommodation during the trip (safe, etc).

I usually had some extra watches in my spare socks. Before I bought some proper travel gear... (No commission or kickbacks here, just a nice product!)

Same as you, one casual and one dress. Those two are fantastic

·

I am neurotic and wrote a whole post about my rituals. Generally, it's fine, just take a good travel case and carry it with you as much as you can.

But tbh your sub is suited to all occasions IMO, even fancy ones with it's fancy ceramic bezel. The only caution I would give is with international travel always be aware of your surroundings. This is why a travel case is good regardless, even with just one watch.

·

I always travel with around 2-3 watches. Can‘t help it!

That’s what I‘m thinking. A watch I can get wet or dirty with no ill affects and a dress watch. I live the Reverso because the strap makes it less dressy but it’s still a watch for a dressier situation. I won’t bring a full on dress watch for this trip.  Thsnks

·

I'm generally a one watch guy on vacations.  I prefer the simplicity of just having one thing strapped to my wrist and fewer things to worry about in my luggage.

The specific watch I travel with depends entirely on what I am doing,  though I tend to err on the side of dressier because if I'm doing anything particularly rugged, I'll probably just leave my watch in the hotel safe.

·

I travel with at least 2. That said, my whole collection cost less than half of one of those watches, so I guess I don't worry as much as you may lol. As long as there is a safe in your hotel and you bring the other watch in a carry-on, I think you should be fine.

These are beautiful pieces . I generally travel with one piece . Just one less thing to think or worry about. I usually wear a Hamilton,  Marathon or Seiko.  I don't want to draw attention to myself or damage the watch. I suggest insurance on all watches. State Farm writes coverage for anywhere in the world - no deductible or Exclusions. There are many options. Be safe and enjoy

I’ve never heard of Marathon watches. Share some info?  All my watches are insured for replacement value.

Marathon is a Canadian based company that still holds DOD contracts with the US, Canada and a handful of other countries. Their watches are required to meet ISO certification and a host of DOD requirements. The watches are typically issued to divers and rescue swimmers. Canadian Rangers favor them . There are many military personnel that wear Marathon. The watches are tanks. The actual timepieces are manufactured in Switzerland with a regulated Selita movement. There are also quartz variants. I am a mechanical watch fan personally- outside of G Shock . You can get models with US Government as issued on the dial and Canadian, US, Israeli etc. Dial markings as issued by their governments. I'm just a standard dial guy.

There are the most popular models

I like to have a few watch boxes with me at all times

Okay all jokes aside, I almost always have a couple watches in tow in my brief case or camera bags. I'm that indecisive! there's always one I can't leave home. I make my own leather watch boxes, however now I'm also toting around a Vario watch box with my Vario 1918 trench watch I'm in love with.

I am a one watch guy on vacation.  I choose a watch that’s suitable for all expected occasions and go with that.  Lately it’s been my BPFF Bathyscaphe.  It’s good for diving to formal and everything in between.

The fewer watches you take with you the more you can bring home....

And the quicker I’d get divorced. Ha

When I travel, and I live in the SF Bay Area, I usually wear my trusty Casio DW 290 and bring a dressier watch if needed.  On a recent trip to Kentucky, I wore Vostok Amphibia and took my Orient 60th Anniversary as the dress watch.  And to be honest, A Rolex Sub is not going to turn any heads, neither is a Reverso.  If your goal is to have a watch you are comfortable wearing while traveling, and the Sub is your daily wearer, then that is what I would bring.

·

I travel with my G-shock and Longines Zulu Time GMT.  I find the Zulu time to be versatile for daily wear and swimming /snorkeling and even dresses up nicely. I wear the G-Shock if I’m doing something a little more robust or if I’ll be in sketchy areas. I personally leave the Datejust at home. It’s insured, but way easier to replace the Longines and G-Shock.

·

I used to only travel with one watch but with all these stories going around about watch theft I plan on traveling with a Seiko and a gshock - the Seiko satisfies that urge to wear a cool mechanical watch but if something does happen to my watch during the trip, it’ll hurt a bit but not as much as if I wore a more expensive watch like my rolex.  The GShock for me is the best inexpensive watch of all time.  If someone does rob me of my GShock I’d gladly give it and just order another one on Amazon 😁🤘🏼

Thanks. Not looking to turn heads. Just looking to enjoy my collection.  i don't think I own any head turners. Question: ant good watch dealers in San Fran or the Pacifica to Big Sur drive?

·

Shreve and Company in SF.  There are a couple in Monterey and Santa Barbara too.
