A Watch for the Great Outdoors

As the weather started to cool down, I felt the need to take a break from work and the city. So, I planned a fishing trip with some buddies to the High Sierras. As I packed my bags the night before, I realized that I needed a watch to bring along. While most people might reach for a field watch or a reliable Seiko for a rugged outdoor adventure, I surprised myself by nervously strapping on my Cartier Tank Solo.To be fair, this was a new watch for me and the upcoming camping trip was going to be the most action it had seen since I bought it. Apart from wearing it while playing video games or going on brisk walks to the mailbox, I had yet to fully experience its potential. But, much to my relief, my anxiety about bringing a dainty dress watch quickly melted away and I felt a sense of comfort and familiarity.

What made the experience even more special was the fact that my first memory with this watch was surrounded by friends and good times. This trip helped me appreciate the importance of "the story" when it comes to watches. Every time I check the time on this Cartier Tank Solo, I won't be reminded of fancy events like an opera or a red carpet at the MET Gala, as you might expect from a typical Cartier owner. Instead, I'll be transported back to this trip and the memories I made with the people closest to me. I'll remember what it felt like to be crushing trout fishing with a Cartier on my wrist - and it felt pretty cool.

while a Cartier Tank Solo may not be the first choice for a fishing trip, it ended up being the perfect choice for me. This experience made me appreciate the story and memories that come with a watch and how it can make even the simplest of adventures more special.

If I was wearing that watch in that situation I would have busted it! You are a braver man than I! But like you say now you have a great attachment to that piece.

·

I loved everything about this, but I must say, the owner of the tank is a compete bad ass!!  I totally am into memories when it comes to watches.   I have been anticipating a wedding of one of my cousins who never had any luck with Men, at 40 years old she found one of the sweetest men and he adores her.  When I heard they were getting married I bought a special watch that I had to wear to the wedding.  The wedding was last weekend and the watch forever has that memory of that great wedding.  P.S. I never went trout fishing, but the pictures look awesome and I'm sure time with your buddies was amazing too.  Like another cruncher said, I wouldn't have the bulls to do it in a tank, but hey we can't all be bad asses!  : )

You're definitely owning the watch and not letting it own you. Nonetheless, this seems a little foolhardy. I'll spin it to say that this will be an exercise (or  experiment) in conscientiousness, proving that a little deliberateness can keep one from dunking and bashing a watch even in rather inopportune circumstances..

·

I can't believe you wear a dress watch to fishing bro..

·

Ohh how’s the leather on that? Might smell fishy afterwards, not a fan of leather getting wet and getting a bit funky after…but It’s your watch OWN it!! 💪… 🍻

·

Braver than I but I respect the reasoning and decision. Way to make memories with it.

·

I will be the wet blanket. I am philosophically opposed to trying to create memories that I will later associate with an inanimate object. We prepare for a trip or vacation and we try to dress appropriately, we don't wear black socks and Florsheims on the beach for example. Part of picking appropriate apparel is picking your watch.  Will the shoes or shirt be similarly associated with this endeavor? I have taken watches to tropical rainforests and European capitals, that's not the part that I remember.

·

I would have taken a field or diver.  Too much risk of damage for me.  But more power to you, my friend!

·

For me personally, it’s not the watch that I’m wearing, it’s the people I’m with and the people I meet along the way that give me the memories, good or bad ones 🤣 But each to their own and it sounds like you had a great time which is the most important thing 👍

You be you.
Your watch (spectacular) and your trip and created memories.

great watch, beautiful memory. just becareful with it 😂

Is it legal to rock a Cartier watch fishing if you're not wearing a Orvis shirt and creel?

Wearing a Cartier fishing, boss move. Mad props to you, my clumsy ass would eat it in the river and break it just because I didn't wear a G Shock. I hope you had a great time.

It's cool all the way around! I don't known a person who wears a Cartier Tank camping. I invision the Royals having their tents set, Range Rovers parked by a river running through a vast forest they own, and an RAF helo landing in a nearby field. The Royals clambering out in hunting tweed checking their tank watch to see if it's time for an afternoon cocktail

I would just worry about the soot from the camp fire and the loose dirt around the camping area getting in to the leather and imbedding itself in small spaces around the caseback and such. The Tank looks delicate. I would just want it to always look that way. But I digress.

Within reason, I think this proves the point that our watches are more safe than we think they are at times. :)

Yes the shoes the shirt, everything will be remembered. this may come from working in the fashion industry, but there are points where pieces become synonymous with moments in my life wether important or not. I can tell you exactly the outfits I was wearing and the season it was released especially if I did something memorable in them. it’s not so much trying to create memories with inanimate objects, but those ojbects just happen to be there while the memories are getting made, thus forming that unique association. but as far as “Appropriate attire”goes, that is definitely subjective, so if you would excuse me i’m going to enjoy a day at the beach in my black socks and florsheims.

Wearing a dress watch, fine. Wearing a $2,000+ dress watch... you brave person you 😂.

I also have different memories attached different material things, though not all of them seem to be by choice!

thank you so much for the kind words badger, this was the best comment I could have received! I just saw your post about the watch you wore to the wedding, great choice for such a special occasion.

to lay all the rumors to rest, the fish were very respectful of the tank and it came back home with me nice and dry! (and not smelling like fish) 😂

The title of your post and the picture of a Cartier Tank are quite the juxtaposition. There aren't many who are daring (or oblivious) enough to wear a Tank while trout fishing.  I personally would be too focused on avoiding the leather strap getting wet or absorbing fish stank than on reeling in the catch. No doubt you have an interesting story you can now regale people with.  Crazy but interesting! 😉

(all in good jest)
