The Tank is for Anything

“A tank is a tank” is something I hear too often from people in the community. There seems to be a general idea that the Cartier Tank can only be a dress watch meant for important occasions. While it’s obvious that the watch would excel in that scenario, there are countless other situations where a tank can be the one watch to keep on your wrist at all times.

In my opinion, the Tank line has the most versatile range of dial combinations than any watch in the catalog. The fun started with the Must de Cartier line from the late 70s and 80s which became the catalyst for so many fun and unique dials. This monumental run of affordable Cartier Tanks are still being alluded to in the modern watches on the shelves today. When I first saw the press photos for the new mosaic dial Tank Louis, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the tritone gold seen now and the trinity dial Tank Musts of the past.

The Cartier Tank can be so much more than your standard black and white dial watch. When looking at the past and present offerings from the brand, it can be overwhelming trying to find the right dial with so many references to choose from. The timeless nature of the Tank allows it blend into any setting you might find yourself. The best example of “blending into any setting” I can give would be the Ref. 3170 which breathes new life into your classic Cartier Tank. While the Tank is a serious watch design with a serious history behind it, this watch features a spotted panther motif across a numeral barren dial and it doesn’t take itself seriously whatsoever. It’s a watch meant for the weekend, for a good time, and to make a statement. That’s what I’m trying to say here, the Tank was never meant to be a one trick pony only for black tie events, but instead it should be a wearable extension of the individual no matter how lavish or plain their lives may be.

Have a little fun with your Tanks people!

Just to be polite I won’t show myself but currently wearing Tank with no shirt on while watching YouTube at home. So obviously I agree with you.

The tank is very versatile. I often wear my Tank (steel on a blue alligator) with blue jeans and a white T-shirt. It’s an amazing watch. #cartier
