Playful meets timeless: Why the John Mayer G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1 is a watch for the ages

John Mayer is a man who knows his watches. Over the years, he's been spotted wearing everything from vintage Rolex Daytonas to Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendars. But despite his high-end tastes, Mayer has also shown an appreciation for more accessible timepieces. In fact, he's collaborated with Casio's G-Shock brand on several occasions, and his latest project, the John Mayer G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1, is a true standout.

At first glance, the 6900-PT1 may look like your average G-Shock and, of course, as with any G-Shock, John Mayer’s is built to withstand just about anything. But take a closer look, and you'll see the subtle touches that make this watch unique.

First and foremost, the John Mayer G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1 boasts a unique and stylish color scheme. Taking inspiration from the Casio PT-1's palette, the watch features a powder blue resin strap and case that are perfectly complemented by stainless steel hardware on the pushers and buckle. This combination creates a bold yet sophisticated look that sets it apart from other G-Shocks. But what really sets this watch apart is its cream-colored dial, which gives the watch a warm feeling like you're at your favorite coffee shop. The color is inviting and comforting, making it a watch that you'll want to wear every day. The cream dial also makes the watch easy to read, with the bright blue numerals and markers standing out against the background. Overall, the color scheme of the John Mayer G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1 is a perfect representation of Mayer's style: bold, yet sophisticated, and with a touch of warmth that makes it stand out from the crowd.

The John Mayer G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1 arrives at a time when the watch industry is undergoing a transformation. In recent years, many watch brands have focused more on exclusivity and high prices rather than creating accessible and fun timepieces. This trend has alienated many potential customers who are looking for watches that reflect their personalities and lifestyles. However, some recent releases, like the Omega Speedmaster Moonswatch, have signaled a change in the industry. This watch, with its playful design and fresh perspective, has reminded watch enthusiasts that watches can be fun and exciting, even when they're based on iconic models. The John Mayer G-Shock collaboration continues this trend, demonstrating that a classic design can be updated and reimagined to be both playful and functional. With this watch, John Mayer and Casio have created a timepiece that's sure to appeal to a new generation of watch lovers who value both style and substance.

And now, with the release of the John Mayer G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1, we see that same sense of playfulness and creativity. This watch is a perfect example of how a brand can take a classic design and make it feel fresh and exciting, without sacrificing any of the qualities that made it great in the first place. It's a watch that's not afraid to have a little fun, and that's something that's sorely needed in the watch industry right now.

In short, the John Mayer G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1 is a watch that's both playful and serious, fun and functional. It's a reminder that watches don't have to be stuffy or overly exclusive to be great, and it's a testament to the enduring appeal of classic designs.

Okay, some Invicta's look even worse...

But I must admit that I strictly personally never liked any BLUE watches (or even blue hands) and light blue is even worse... Or any oval shapes, either... Except for a few symmetric arches in architecture...

But "smaken är delad som baken" as we say in Sweden, meaning the taste is spit as the butt 😉

I agree that it's a cool watch and it's nice that John chose something more reasonably priced then a Rolex for example, however I'd also argue that because the JM G-Shocks are only available through hodinkee in limited numbers and the moonswatch is only available from Swatch stores and in limited numbers (due to stocking issues) that regardless of how comparatively inexpensive and affordable the actual watch is, the lack of attainability means they still end up being exclusive and scalpers are currently having a field day.

If Casio had made the JMG as part of their regular line up in unlimited numbers, worldwide, then I'd say they had made a special edition for the people.

Beautiful. Good review. 👏🏻

Spot on my friend. Have the same watch in the wrist today. Personally, I live the salmon/light pink “G” and sub dial colors, along with the baby blue “G-Shock” color. The whole color scene is just plain fun and tough not to love. I throughly enjoy working on the car, oil changes, gardening cutting wood and woodworking with this watch on. Made to take a beating, could care less what it goes for on the second hand market.

Little known fact- JM also does design work for Fisher-Price.

I always thought JM was a diehard IWC aficionado. Not my cup of tea but hey it looks fun 🤩 thats the target audience. So well done 👍🏼
