Should Everyone have a Quartz in their Life?

I feel like Quartz watches can be a bit of a divisive subject in the watch community.

On the one hand you have the ever popular G shocks and on the other you have fashion watches. But is there an in between??

Now for me personally I don’t own a quartz but I know it’s only a matter of time for 2 reasons.

No. 1 - I need a beater watch for when the tools are out and I’m making something or for when the zombie apocalypse happens and I need a daily wear that won’t let me down. For that alone the 5610 will be purchased when I can be bothered.

No. 2 - I want a grab and go watch when I can’t be arsed to set the time and or date and just want to get out the house, but for this I would like something quality.

Now there is a plethora of quartz watches out there, but is there one you as a watch enthusiast would want? Thats the question. For the inbetween picks you can range from the Longines VHP, to the Citizen Chronomaster, to the Breitling Aerospace to the F.P Journe Elegante! But in reality I don’t have 32k for the Elegante and I don’t want to pay 2k for a Citizen, so for me the Aerospace and the VHP are in my sights. If you look hard enough the VHP can be bought for under £500 which for a watch that is accurate to 5 seconds a year is incredible, how the Aerospace is 80’s cool. Yes you can get a grand seiko too but again very expensive!

But what about you guys? Fans of Quartz watches? Would you get one? And if you did what?

One must be a really committed steampunk not to.

I have both quartz and mechanical. I started my collection with a quartz #tagheuer F1 and a Hamilton and they are very much a grab n go but I do prefer the mechanical watches I have.

I think they have a place in anyone’s collection, even Patek have just had a quartz watch unveiled at W&W 24 and like you said FP journe have one too. I think most watch brands have used quartz at some point

·

I think quartz watches are great, and far more practical when you have a collection. I currently own more quartz than mechanical, and I wear the quartz watches more often.

I highly recommend a quartz grab-and-go watch for everybody.

·

I like watches.

·

Love quartz. I own 12 or more. My favorite is my Bulova Lunar Pilot and my Tissot Chrono XL.

Don't let the haters here in WC dictate your choices! Tell them to move on.

I do own automatics and love them to.

Enjoy your watches!

Cheers

With a The Citizen or Grand Seiko quartz watch you could get one of the best watches in its category for 2 grand or under. That attracts me. What would one of the best mechanical watches cost you? Also, I like the convenience of quartz. I have a grand seiko quartz gmt. So handy, so well finished, just a nice watch.

I love mechanical as well, but would never be able to afford the levels of GS or The Citizen in a mechanical watch.

·

No.

But then, why not? The question rests in superposition…

·

Most of my collection is mechanical. I have a couple of quartz watches in my budget sub collection. I also want, eventually, to have a Breitling Emergency (which is also quartz) in the primary collection.

Having a few quartz is good for any collection. Grab and go, no need to worry about winding or keeping them on a winder.

What haters? I’ve never run across a ‘hater’ regarding quartz. I’m not a big fan, and won’t buy another one, but an old and longtime favourite of mine was quartz and I have a few here that are quite good.

If someone says that they don’t like quartz or that quartz is inferior to mechanical, that’s not HATE. That’s an opinion. By characterising any negative comment as hate not only suppresses speech, but creates needless discomfort and uneasiness in the forum.

I have no time for abuse or nasty comments aimed at anyone for any reason here, so please understand that I am saying this with a kind intention and certainly not as a snarky mind-fart! 😂

·

Of course you should.

Nope

·

If they want to participate in #maythequartz then yes

·

I have a quartz Seville Omega from 40 years ago that I only wear for dressy occasions. It seemed like it was always dead every time I thought about wearing it. My beater was a Casio solar watch and so I got an upscale Citizen to wear when I wanted to be a little smarter. The ultimate grab and go. Both are atomic, which I also like. To be a purist collector, you have to prefer some degree of inaccuracy, delicacy, and need for repair.

·

Of course you should. Some of my favourites are Quartz. Don't get hung up on Mechanical or Quartz, find the ones you love and enjoy them whether Quartz or not. IMHO

Have been in numerous discussions about mechanical versus quartz. There are those out there that absolutely will have nothing to do with quartz. They say it has no soul lol.

My experience not yours. Sorry if it came of differently. 🍻

Yes! Quartz belongs in every collection but for me it's either a G-Shock which is totally GOD tier or there must be a reason why it's quartz like these:

1) Oil filled like the Sinn Hydro watches.

2) Breitling Emergency because there is an electronic beacon.

3) Tissot T-Touch type watches with sensors.

4) Military spec like CWC SBS issue that calls for a quartz.

Everything else, if it has quartz then I am likely to shy away from. Also, a smart watch like the Apple watch is not a watch, it's a device so that's disqualified from this consideration.

I don’t trust myself or others around me with

the emergency, it’s a 100k in fines and costs if you pull that for a laugh 😂

·

For your reason no. 2 (grab and go) I have a Tissot PR100 quartz. Simple, inexpensive, thin and works with many 20mm straps.

·

All my watches are quartz... 😅

·

My collection shifted to mostly Quartz last year and it has been so exhibiting since. I added the VHP this year.

I just have two autos in my collection as of now.

·

Forget the accuracy of the VHP, it’s a lovely added bonus. For me, the way it wears is the most appealing feature. It’s a joy to wear!

·

You immediately grabbed my attention by displaying the cracking Longines VHP and the brilliant Citizen Chronomaster, which I have both bought with great satisfaction.

To each their own, but there are features that mechanical timepieces simply cannot provide at sub $ 3000 price point :

  • incredible accuracy (once again, Longines and Citizen don't disappoint)

  • perpetual calendar (same)

  • being on time when you haven't touched them for a while, or don't move when wearing them (like my trusty bedtime Marathon Navigator)

  • serious anti-magnetic properties

I love my BlackBay 58 as much as the next guy, but wouldn't think of not having my beloved quartz watches in the rotation

My choice of quartz on my collection

I’ve got a grand seiko quartz because it has the dial hand case and index finishing of any of the mechanical watches but at a fraction of the price. Plus I can just pick it up and go without needing to set time or date etc. plus super accurate. Why the hell not?

There are some very high end quartz watches out there. The FPJ elegante is an incredible quartz wafch

Yeah I love the look of the VHP. I’m surprised they haven’t updated it yet. 👌

·

I think there is no right or wrong. It depends on your personal taste and style.

For example, I don't have any mechanical watches yet 😇

·

Yes, my GSHOCK.

My cheapest watch, but the most accurate of my collection. I use it to set the time on the others.

·

Most of my collection consists of quartz watches. As much as I like my couple of automatics I'm still a bit wary of breaking them, which is weird because one I got for like 70 bucks and the other for under 100. Plus then I can just pick a watch and not mess with it too much. I also really like my various timers, stop watches, and alarms. I only have one automatic with a dive bezel, and if I'm going to shell out the money for a mechanical chronograph I might as well get a really fancy g shock I won't worry about.

I do have my eye on a few automatics, I've seen a really cool milgauss homage from San Martin, and I kinda want an auto citizen too.

·

I think it’s safe to say there’s something for everyone!

Which grand seiko model if I may ask?

I have sbgv231 and I love it. But it lacks jumping hour hand like 9f85 movement has, and no lume.

I thought about sbgn027 which looks sick but I kinda don’t like that the lume is only available at 3-6-9-12 positions.

An alternative I considered was sbgp015 which has jumping hour feature.

Anyway, I’d love to hear about your experience with it.

Hi, a bit of a late reply. I have the sbgn029. I love it and the lack of lume is a non issue for me. However, you are right, the jumping hour hand is really handy. More so than the gmt hand. I have been doing quite a bit of travelling lately, both privately and with work. The jumping hour hand really is handy when changing time zones. The dial finish, the indices and the case finishing is just gorgeous as with any other grand seiko, but I guess you know all about that from your sbgv231. Shortly speaking, if you do lots of travelling a high end quartz with a jumping hour hand is really handy to have. If you have any other specific questions just fire away.

Since the Omega and Tudor went off for sale a week or so back, my main go to watch at this moment in time is quartz, and I have zero issue with it. When the Tuna was designed, quartz was the absolute no-brainer for the task at hand. Plus, it's far from a run of the mill quartz, being a high-torque quartz. Anyone who writes these off "for being a quartz" may as well put a sticky note on their forehead that says, "I don't really know anything about watches..." It's an absolute ripper of a watch on so many levels; design, movement, case.
