Any Recommendation for Everyday Watch?

Hi Everyone, I’m very new to this hobby of watch collection, and I need recommendation on Everyday watch that I can both dress up & dress down.

After many research (through youtube and blogs), I conclude the 2 options I wanted to get are Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra (220.10.41.21.10.001) or Omega Seamaster Diver 300M (210.32.42.20.10.001). Both are very versatile in their straps options (on the top of my priority list) and looks amazing!

Before arriving to the conclusion of Omega Seamaster series, I was inlove with Seiko Presage Sharp Edge (SPB169J1)’s Hemp Leaf dial! And as you can see, I love Green so most of the watch that interest me has green dial.

Anyway, do any of you have any thought about this?Any other recommendation watch I should look out for?

Very excited to begin this journey and Thanks in advance!

You have picked three great watches. IMO Omega is one of the three leading production brands killing it with movements and styling. Omega ,  Grand Seiko & Zenith.  The latest Omega  Coaxial Movements are incredible. Accuracy,  AntiMagnetic,  Shock Resistant and Water Resistance.  I would narrow down to the two Omega watches from the three. Seiko makes great watches. I own more than one - including Prospex & Gran  Seiko. Of the three watches you are looking at Omega is just next level in every aspect.  Thier green dial Seamaster 300 is my 1st choice.  You will love it. The ceramic dial is so different from anything on the market. The 300 diver has greatest resale potential & is super tough = wear it every day and all day.

At your price point you could look at a few pieces from Grand Seiko- just to make it confusing . If you go diver you are double the budget  Plus no green dial variant- only dress/sports offering

Hope this helped !

I think you’ve got a very good choice with the Omega, I have a Seamaster 150 & 300 and I’m happy with both. The green dial GS GMT SBGM247 is also worth a look. Great everyday watch, but very different look and feel from the Omega‘s.

Just adding to what was already said. Omega treats their customers well and has great after sales service. JLC has really awesome after sales service. I have not used any services from GS after sales, but the online buying experience from GS is top notch. I got to GS for simple time+date dress watches, evolution 9 and elegance series. For "sport" watches I like Omega. Take a look at the Omega seamster world timer, its a beautiful watch.

I was on the fence on deciding whether to go with the Seamaster diver 300M or the Seamaster 300M, but at the end I like the design of wavy dial in the diver 300 more, thats why I didn’t include it in my list. but thanks for the recommendation!

Just saw the GS GMT SBGM247, looks great! I’ll have to see some more youtube review on this watch. Thanks for the recommendation!

I agree, the Seamaster World Timer looks great, but I think its too flashy for an everyday watch? I do think this would make a great dress watch with leather strap.

Can I make a totally counter-intuitive and nut job suggestion?  DON'T GET AN EVERYDAY WATCH!  Here's my hare-brained logic:

  • If you are deciding to become a watch enthusiast, the LAST thing you want is to have a go-anywhere-do-anything (GADA) watch.  Why?  Because then you'd only have 1 watch
  • If you're a watch enthusiast, why would you want to limit yourself?  It's like alcohol.  If you're an alcoholic, like me, you'll drink gin, you'll drink vodka, you'll drink champagne, you'll drink Seagram's wine coolers for god's sake, so long as it's got alcohol in it!

If you're a watch enthusiast, you'll want niche watches.  Watches that absolutely can't go anywhere and can't do anything.  You'll want:

  • A flieger, even though you ain't piloting a Spitfire
  • A chronograph, even though the only thing you'll be timing is the duration you can hold your breath under water during bath time
  • A diver, even though the only time you might get your wrist wet is if you've had one too many Seagram's and you splash the bottle's contents onto your arm as you stagger from the lawn chair over to the grill
  • A GMT, even though for F*CK'S sake, what's the time when the GMT hand is pointing to between 17 and 18?  I mean, why do I have to do math?  The reason I am no longer in high school is because I never want to look at numbers!

Don't get a GADA.  Get like 20 niche watches that are all totally weird and stupid and fulfill one tiny function, even when they're 8,000 times worse at that stated function than the phone in your pocket.

Someone suggested the GS GMT SBGM247 That's a stunner!

May I also add.. I do not follow the notion of a "dress" watch and "sports" watch. I will wear a nice watch ( like GS 37mm) with shorts and T-shirt and flip-flops ( my daily attire ), I have worn divers with suite and Tie. You decide what statement you want to make and have the confidence to do it.

My opinion only. If you are still developing your taste (unless you are very sure) I would say go with more affordable pieces and get couple of pieces so you can get your feet wet. The presage is a great choice. I think starting your journey from the bottom to the top will make you appreciate the upgrades.

Noooo, he could be free!  One and done!

Don't rob him of the one chance he has to avoid this spiraling budgetary nightmare of watch collecting!

Omega AQ or a seamaster 300m.

You have a set of really cool choices, but I gotta ask...have you tried any of them on?  I find that my preferences tend to change dramatically once they're on wrist at an authorized dealer.

I bought the Aqua Terra online and ended up trading it in after just a few weeks of ownership.  It's a technically near perfect watch in a great size (the 8900 caliber with the jumping hour hand is something that I think more watch brands should do) but I could never get a comfortable fit with the butterfly clasp.

A relationship with a good AD might even steer you to some cool stuff you weren't looking at.  I ended up trading the AT for my first Spring Drive Grand Seiko, a recommendation by the AD.  GS hadn't even been on my radar before and now I think it might be my favorite watch.  For a first big watch purchase, I think it's worth strolling around a multibrand store for a bit.

Have you considered a vintage Smiths?

interesting idea, right now I’m using apple watch series 6, and after some thought, I don’t think its worth it to get a watch that priced less than the apple watch (because i want to upgrade) even though i understand the idea of trying different type of watches to know which one i like. thanks for the recommendation though, I might try to get the seiko one instead 👍🏼

Yes, thank you for the recommendation, I think I’ll do just that, start with seiko and work my way up🙌🏼

Think about a Speedmaster Professional.  The black dial pretty much always works,  it's big enough to feel sporty and provide some presence with causal dress, but not so large that it won't fit under a shirt cuff.  The bracelet works pretty much all the time, IMHO, but you can dress it down with a NATO or a sixties-style rally strap, or dress it up with a leather one.  I've worn it to weddings on a black gator strap.

I get what you say about GMT watches.  IMHO, the best GMT movement (from a readability/usability standpoint, at least) is the Ulysse Nardin Dual Time movement.  The second time zone is in a window that snaps to the next hour pretty much instantaneously.  And there's a quick-set feature for the main hour hand: you have +/- buttons on the left side of the case.  These bump the main time up/down by one hour, so it's trivial to set the watch to local time when you get off a plane.  And finally, the big date display is one of the very few that can be set in both directions.  This isn't a GMT thing, of course, but it's absurdly cool to watch the date display go backwards as you're setting the time.

I spent 3 years looking for and finally buying a GADA watch. I got a Monta Oceanking and I love it. But I 1000% agree with you because the 3 years I was looking for that watch I fell in love with so many other watches and my watch budget isn’t extensive and it’s hard to justify buying a $1000 Hamilton Field watch when I justified the $1800 Monta by saying “It’s the only watch I’ve ever need” so I screwed myself 😂🤣😂🤣
