Do you buy watches as presents?

Hi, do you guys/gals "force" this hobby on unsuspecting subjects? I mean, watch as a present for your SO is a normal thing to do, right?

But what about a life-long friend who has almost no interest in watches? Would you just buy him/her an automatic watch for a significant occasion, like 30th, 40th, 50th birthday? Even if the watch will probably not be worn? Isn't there a better way to use the money?

There is an inherent value in a watch, we as watch enthusiasts see, no matter if it is a 30€ Casio or a mechanical watch worth a few grand. But for "normal" people, watches are merely a fashion accessory, those more expensive ones are status symbols, but not much more these days. It's essentially almost a useless trinket, let's face it. Is the value I see in a present such as that more important than the value the gifted person sees?

Picrel: it's the watch I'm considering.

Yes! Most definitely!

I bought 7 watches for friends and family this year. 2 GShocks, 2 Moonswatches, a Tissot Gentleman, a Cartier Ballon Bleu and a Seiko Presage. I do a lot of research for every watch and, so far, all of them wear the watches regularly (except the moonswatches, those were just for fun).

In my experience, most people like watches, even those who don't normally weat watches. They might not be nerds about them but they will appreciate having a nice watch.

I have bought my wife & daughter a watch for their birthdays. In my daughter's case it was her 21st & I wanted to buy her something that would be something that she would have for many years. The watch was in addition to money, which we all need at that age.

Money however, can be spent on so many different items that don't last or are but memories. I wanted her to have something that would accompany her through her life & would remind her of her younger, carefree days.

I would also consider buying a watch for my 2 closest friends on a landmark birthday which unfortunately for us will be our 60ths in the not too distant future.

Yes, absolutely.

Gifted 2 Hamilton's, Cartier Ballon Bleu, Omega Ladymatic, Quartz Aqua Terra, Alpinist reissue, couple of Turtles..

Only one I regret was a quartz Khaki King I got a mate for his 50th, it lasted a year or so then died - I replaced it with the Seiko Alpinist reissue which he loves.

I've had my Grail a few years so there's not much out there that's affordable that I want, so I very much enjoy giving folks a watch - & it's got a few into the hobby, my Mrs included.

Highly recommended 👍👍

Very well said! I can highly relate to having my grail watch and just filling other wrists with watches I love hahaha

When i buy gifts for people, I try to make sure it's something they are interested in.

If they've shown no interest in watches, I'm not going to buy them a watch.

·

Watches are such a personal thing that I would only do so if I knew the recipient wanted a specific watch. I would never gift a watch to someone in the hopes that they would develop an interest in watches, since this can easily become a very expensive hobby, and I would not want to be responsible for getting someone involved in a hobby that they really can't fully afford.

If I knew someone that wanted a watch, I could unload some I already have. Why buy a new one?

·

Never have unless they specifically requested a watch.

I give gifts based on what the recipient likes, not what I like.

·

I have given 2 watches to a cousin he definitely appreciated it but he’s still not into watches. However that’s wasn’t my intention when I gave them to him. The first one I gifted was because I got caught up in the smart watch craze when they first became a thing. The second one was simply because I was making room for a watch that I was buying.

Ok, but did the people actually want a watch, or you just assumed they did and went ahead and gifted it?

I can relate to that feeling, my father in law got a Junghans from me, it's definitely one of the watches I would like to own one day.

But already l knew that he likes watches and he actually wears them. And I also knew that he missed an everyday dressy piece.

Yeah, it's money wasted on a watch that actually never gets worn.

Those money could've gone to something the person actually enjoys.

I wish I could afford to. I am considering building mods for my friend and my wife’s uncle. I just don’t want it just thrown into a drawer and forgotten about.

·

I’m planning to get gshocks for my friends kiddos this Christmas!

They had no idea.

They all loved 'em and wear regularly, except my 83 year old Dad who I bought the quartz Aqua Terra from a few months later.( He prefers easy reader digital, which I got him as a replacement). He used the money to put towards a car for my Mrs, bless him. 😊👍🏻

·

Yep… trouble is that no one wants them, so I end up with more.

·

Nope, I gifted friends watches before and will continue to do so, but only if I know they are enthusiastic about watches, i.e. they like to wear watches and/or have a collection.

If this is not the case then I don't, some people don't like to wear jewelry or other accessories and I respect that.

Also, my wife doesn't wear a watch either, she has 5 of them and only ever wears 1 and only when it matches her outfit, but she always wears a bracelet.

·

I mean.. I do buy watches as presents.. to myself 🤣

·

Sometimes. I gave my uncle and Invicta a decade ago that he still wear every day 😅

My brother never really had any interest in watches but recently said he’d like one. He showed me a blue dialled integrated bracelet dropship watch from instagram he was looking to buy so I got him a Tsuyosa. Got my partner an Omega cocktail watch from the 30’s because that’s her jam

I bought three for my wife and one for my brother after they declared interest, otherwise I don't gift watches. There is enough of people with watch problems🙂

·

Except for my kids, i have not forced a watch on anyone. 😁

But my kids have since liked wearing watches and it's not because i made them do so. 🥰 seed planted.

·

I bought a couple of Casios to my nephews (they're 12 and 10 and they should use a watch instead of reaching for their cellphones to look for time at school) but giving watches to adults?

Unless I know they liked watches, wanted a particular watch or the type who's grateful for a gift, nope. Too stingy to give stuff I'd like to other people, I guess.

My castoffs? Only if they wanted a specific watch I owned & was planning on selling anyway.

·

Definitely have: a little dress watch for my wife, a calculator watch for my self-professed nerd little sister, my dad really liked an Aqua Terra homage I had been wearing so I gave that to him. My brother was a tougher sell, but I think I succeeded (somewhat) in infecting him, haha. I personally find buying watches for watch nerds an extremely hard thing to do. As collectors, we all value different aspects of a watch and I think it’s probably one of the hardest things to do without some real guidance by the person who’s receiving the gift. I would never try to by a watch without asking the person what exact model they want. Otherwise, I’m just sending money on an object that will most likely never get used.

·

I bought my kids, a couple watches so they can learn to tell time.

I also gifted my wife a Seiko modded watch with a tiffany blue dial.

·

I’ve only gifted watches to two people. My wife and my cousin for his 16th birthday.
