If there’s one thing we watch collectors love, it’s discovering a fellow enthusiast. The ensuing conversation discussing the relative merits of case materials, beat rates, and the latest earth-shattering Rolex update (jk) fills us with glee.
Finding a fellow watch lover is fun! So what about making a new watch lover?
Story time: I had been trying to get my younger brother into watches for a while, but our tastes and lifestyles are very different. He works with his hands, and is a smartwatch and occasionally Gshock kind of guy. Doesn’t like divers, bracelets, and hated anything with polished surfaces.
Over the years, I’ve sent him a cavalcade of links to Hamilton Khakis, Boldrs, Etc… but nothing piqued his interest. I thought it was a lost cause… Until I showed him the Sinn 556a; he was all over that. But at $1500, it’s hardly an entry level piece.
So, in an effort to stoke the fires of horological interest, I began to look for an alternative. Turns out the Citizen bm8470-11ee is a fantastic budget take on the Sinn aesthetic.
I bought it for him, and now he’s informed me he’s got Vostok Kommandirski on the way as well! Mission accomplished! Haha
Have you ever bought a watch for someone, in the hopes they’d become a fellow watch nerd?
Just a man with a few too many watches, and a borderline-unhealthy infatuation with blue dials.
I bought my 17 year old son a Casio. He had no interest in watches at all but was a big Better Call Saul TV series fan. So I bought him the watch that featured on Sauls wrist heavily in one episode. He was happy with that and wears it often. It's a slow burner with him!

Not this enthusiast of 5 decades.
My interests are mine and I don't try to get others interested, unless they ask a specific question, and even then I answer the question without trying to bring them over to the dark side.

Can’t think of a better way to kickstart a collection, than with a Casio. Some top notch parenting right there, sir 🍻

He doesn't sit down and watch reviews with me yet but I'm still working on it! None of his mates wear watches so I'm a background influence!
I just posted a story about potentially getting my wife into watches (finally). Go check it out. it is a quick story.
Shameless post plug😎
Trying so hard to get my daughters (23,21) into watches and wife.
With a couple of purchases and some bribery it’s worked somewhat. 😃
They are sick of me asking for wrist shots. This one came in last weekend…
Brick by brick getting them into it as well as my nephews…
You know what's funny. I am 50 years old and a tech nerd and after 7 years wearing smartwatches I had enough and have just come back to traditionals.
Who changed my mind?
My 17 years old son. Yes 17.
He bought a Nordgreen Philosopher some time ago with his savings. I always mocked him for not wanting an apple watch and for the size of his Nordgreen (35 mm I believe). I always thought the bigger the better and I drooled over Huaweis 48 mm smartwatches.
Then he took me to the mall to watch window shopping. I was amazed as I didn't realize you could get beautiful watches below 300 usd. My Galaxy Watch suddenly looked like a toy.
I pulled the trigger on a couple of Seikos and I am not looking back. Now I am making a wish list of what I want for this year (a diver, a homage, some Seiko 5s,).
I think I am. In trouble.

Congrats! And welcome back to the dark side 😉
My father just bought me this Citizen yesterday! It is awesome!
I like the aesthetics of the Sinn although I’ve never seen one in the flesh. But I am a #Citizen kind of guy. Got this one at auction. It should be here tomorrow. Your photos spurred me on to post this photo…

My son is 16, and he is a traditional watch guy, as well. 😎 Although he has both bigger and smaller watches in his collection. I think his largest watch is 42mm.
