How Many is Too Many?

Image

I've always been fascinated by watches, but have only been a serious collector for about the last 4/5 years. My collection now stands at 11 pieces (correction 12 pieces), all purchased new. I love every one of them for various different reasons and wear them all, regularly rotating them. But I've started to think how many watches do you seriously need? That said there are still a few watches I would love to own. So do I start selling some to make room for new additions, or do I keep going and possibly end up with a collection that is far too big? I would be really interested to hear other peoples opinions, habits, or attitude to their collections? My wife thinks I'm addicted and she is probably right!!😉

Nice collection!

I'm at 15 watches, and out of the 15 I regularly wear 4 and only occasionally wear another 3. Four of the watches are inexpensive digital watches, so I don't really worry about them one way or another.

I've come to the conclusion that somewhere between 5-10 watches(excluding fun digital watches) is what my ideal collection would be. It's enough watches to have variety, but not so many that they sit unused for extended periods of time.

I only have 3 watches at the moment. I only recently formed the conscious intention of collecting watches. As it stands, between my Ecko (fashion watch), my Stuhrling, and my Tissot, I tend to wear the Tissot most often, the Stuhrling occasionally, and the Ecko very rarely. (The Ecko has Swarovsky (sp?) crystals around the dial, so I treat it like jewelry; I only wear it to "dressy" events.)

Having said that, I can see myself eventually having 10 or more watches. And here's the reason: Legacy.

I intend to pass down my watch collection to my son, and he has already stated to me that he has the same intention with his future son(s). The watches might not all get worn, but they will become family heirlooms, and treasured keepsakes. So I don't really worry about having "too many" watches, because for me, it's about creating a family tradition of loving and wearing nice watches.

P.S. I also buy watches as gifts for my wife and daughter, and they have expressed the same desire to keep and pass down their watches as well. We're one, big, happy, watch-wearing family! 😎

Well your going to have to struggle with your inner self and make those collection rules or boundaries. I'm still trying to fine tune my rules. Yeah not working out too well after 30 years lol. I love every one of them. My wife knows I have issues (watches) and tolerates my addiction. Yes, addiction lol. I get one or two from her every year and they are watches I want not need. She's great!

Oh well I have 5 empty slots left and I'm in my 60s and they are now only for my grail watches. My grails are harder to find but not like Rolex or Omega but more micro brands like certain models that are hard to find for sale like Zelos or Helm etc.

Enough rambling

Enjoy the watch!

Cheers!

Thanks, I have a son, a son-in-law and 2 step sons, so perhaps I need to start considering who inherits what!

Thanks, I also have a g-shock that I use for mountain biking!

Thanks, it helps having an understanding wife. My wife bought my Carrera and Monaco, both for different Christmas's!

Interesting to hear about your grails!

If any of them live in the same house, you could even allow them to wear some of your less-used pieces, if they're old enough to take care of them. 😎

Watches don’t take up much space. Get as many as one wants I say.

·

I like to be closer to 5 than 10.

·

Start selling the most unused ones that dont have a strong attachment to you. Clean up is always good even just for the feeling of clean up.

then slowly add the ones you like.

trust ur feeling when u feel there are too many :) if u feel not enough variety then add some new ones.

Interesting to hear about your grails!

She tolerates my collections, watches, US Commemorative stamps, and Kachinas dolls (sold most of them). Married 33 years. Sounds like your wife is understanding about your appreciation of watches.

The micro brand Zelos has a model last year I fell in love with. The Spearfish Burnt Orange Dial Diver. Still watched. Willing to buy but from reputable seller or dealer only or even a member on here.

Well enough lol

It’s all relative to someone’s financial situation.

congrats on some very nice watches 😎

I guess you are right, I'm lucky enough to have a good job/income and can afford my collection!

·

Awesome collection there.

I went up to 15, realized i only wore a fraction of that, so now it's gonna be down to 5. 2 I currently own (bb58, GS sbge253), 1 ill soon own (Pelagos 39 once I get the AD call), Speedmaster as my next purchase by summer 2023 and then the dream one, ill put my name on the list for the Explorer 36.

Then it's done I think.

·

How many watches do you need? Just one more...

Great collection...looks like you need another watchbox. That will set you on your way toward obtaining the next nine watches you need for your collection. 😉

·

I don't like to put a cap on my collecting. I follow my heart! There's no use in telling myself I only need X amount of watches. If I feel I have some that aren't getting the love they deserve I sell em'

·

I think the idea of how many watches one needs is somewhat of a slippery slope; we all have plenty of things we don't need. As long as it's done responsibly, I think it's fine to indulge in the hobby however one sees fit.

But for me, at the moment, I have 5 watches. My watch box holds 12, and I think that's a good number to max out at.

·

You can tell your wife that you are nowhere near addiction.

This is the collection of an addict (me)

·

My current 10 is the number maximum for me, but If I could have the perfect watches I really want, 5 would be great!

·

Watches are not a necisstiy! I currently own 5 and have every intention of increasing that amount! so long as you wear them and love them, there is no such thing as too many!

·

If you enjoy collecting these beautiful toys, why set yourself a limited to have.  Buy how many you can afford to buy and want and dont care what anyone says.  It's your hobby and not theirs.

·

Great collection!! That Planet Ocean is 👌. My watch box ballooned up to 28 after several budget watch impulse buys last year. I feel like that’s probably the upper end for me, as option paralysis began to set in and I ended up just wearing my PRX or Mido most days. Now I am in the process of thinning the herd to about 22:

  • 9 “core” pieces that I wear regularly

  • 4 seldom worn, but sentimental pieces

  • 4 dress/oddball/occasional wear pieces

  • 4 cheap beaters

  • 1 open spot for a grail purchase in the next year or so.

After that, it’ll probably be a “one in, one out” policy… at least for a while haha

·

That's a superb collection you have there. Personally, I'd keep them all until you find your next, and as is normally the case, more expensive watch, then sell a a few to 'soften the blow'.

I've had watches I swore I'd never sell until a new grail appeared, and then they were up for the chop!

As for quantity, that's a personal choice. For me, I have 20 in my head as a limit.

Enjoy the superb ones you have in good health

·

First off, beautiful collection! If you are having these thoughts I'd put a pause on purchasing anything for a set period: 6 months maybe? That said, you are a collector. By definition "One is too many & one thousand is never enough." 😎

·

To many is the number your wife is not happy with 👍 the right amount is the number she finds acceptable 👌 And then, there is the number you are happy with 🤫 😂

·

Wow, beautiful collection, well done!

·

My wife thinks I'm nuts for 10. I keep telling her I'm not done...there are other pieces that I want. Your collection is sweet. Congrats!

·

When I finally got a 10 slot watch box, I figured that should be enough to accommodate watches that I would actually wear rather than just collect.

Only 1 slot left, so it had better be a top pick before the culling begins.

·

There are wants & there are needs and they are 2 very different things.

Have as many as you like, Im on 60+ now & my sister made a comment the other day on how many do you need you only have 2 wrists.

I asked how many shoes she owned... there was silence 😉
