Suggest a Dress Watch for a guy who only needs to wear one 4-5 times a year.

I only need to wear a suit 4 or 5 times a year. I'd like a nice rectangular dress watch for those occasions but don't want to spend much $ at all since it will be worn so little. What are your picks for this situation, Crunchers?

These are good picks! Hamilton has good options in this style too.

·

For how little you would use it, the Seiko tank is the economical choice. I've seen better from Bulova and Citizen, but for a higher price. Casio also has a few square analog pieces.

·

200$, very good deal

A bit of a dark horse, but Lip out of France make very affordable dressy quartz pieces, reminiscent of Reversos, Tanks and Dolce Vitas:

I gifted to my girlfriend the smaller version of the Seiko Tank, and I can only say good things about it. It is a quality piece through and through, but there’s no middle ground between a diminute small version and a huge large version.

A bambino perhaps?

A rectangular "dress" watch can be worn on many occasions, formal or informal. I wear them with t-shirts and shorts and I am considered very fashionable (waiting for laughter).

Seiko and Hamilton have great options. Alone the Lorier Zephyr.

Reminds me of something my Grandma used to say when I’d claim to be something:

“To me you’re X (an astronaut, a fashion plate, or whatever). To you you’re X. But to X, are you X?”

Then she’d make a pie.

On topic: You’re right. I love “dressing down” in a dressy watch, even if it means a strap swap.

This watch is a bit pricier than other models mentioned here. However, it comes with a black and a brown strap, effectively giving you 2 watches because it can now pair with any suit color. It’s also very slim and classy in my opinion.

·

From these two, I would go with the Bulova, simply because it is more unique. Both look good though.

·

It's not strictly rectangular but this rather marvelous vintage wonder is available for a very reasonable price on eBay right now. Some bloke called Gasworks... gets good reviews...

I do love the look of those Bambinos. 😎

Between these two I would pick the Seiko. But there are good suggestions in other comments. Good luck choosing 🥳

They’re still around?

The Seiko is fine in a generic dress watch kinda way, the Lip is almost iconic since a gold T18 was gifted to Churchill, There is also the Vario VERSA to consider, although it's a bit on the THICK side.

But I still think that the Lorier is the best looking of the bunch.

Was gonna say just this

On the rare occasion (these days) that I rock a suit, I wear a Rado Coupule. I coordinate the strap with the suit or sport coat.

I have the Bulova and can vouch for it as a very inexpensive yet quality and versatile watch. Swap out the straps and you can get a lot of wrist time with it in many scenarios. Black croc for dress, brown for casual, mesh for an all around vibe, or even rubber for the sportier look. Either way both are excellent watches.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Maen Manhattan 37: https://www.maenwatches.com/collections/manhattan-37 This has received a lot of praise recently - and for a good reason! A colleague has the salmon dial variant, it looks amazing. I was sure it was more expensive, this really punches above its weight class. The design also lets you dress it up or down. The blue dial is probably the safer choice (picture borrowed from Watchfinder), but again the salmon dial is amazing!

I bought these for my two sons to wear to their sister's wedding in May of 2022 - (these looked good with their tuxedos - they both wear field watches daily so they needed something for the wedding)

I refurbish them and sell them to new homes. Hopefully this one will find its new home soon. It is a very pretty little watch

·

Not sure what the rest of your collection looks like, but personally, I would skip the new watch and make those special memories in my nicer watches that I will keep forever.

·

I would go for an Oris Rectangular if you like square or rectangular watches. I believe this watch is like a Tank from Cartier, it would look perfect for dressy ovations but also would be very appropriate for the everyday

Longines Dolce Vita.
