I Love But Would NEVER Own

So I had the pleasure of this stunner at the madhouse last week thanks to Watchfinder . The GMT Master 2. In my opinion the most recognisable watch in the planet??? Not just by watch enthusiasts??? Other than the F91W of course!

This is a watch id love to have but will never own for many reasons I’ll save for next weeks show but my question to you is…

Is there a watch out there you’d love to own but never will ? Not just because of the cost???;)

As a pilot's watch fanatic I would love to own the Seiko Kamikaze watch. The history of that watch is insane let alone that it was build with a one-way ticket.

What a crown!!!!!

·

Absolutely anything which is gorgeous but too big for me.

Examples might be the Mercedes IWC Pilot Chronograph (love the colour and the whole look.)

Image

A more recent one would be the new JLC Reverso Tribute Chronograph (two stunning sides.)

Image

Every time I look at them on the wrist I would feel just this shade of "its a bit big for me.."

That reverso tho.. god its sexy..

I love the Goofy Panda by Studio Underdog it’s just a fantastic looking watch.

Image

I love chronographs and I love watches that look a little bit different and this one more than covers that. But I have a requirement of 100m wr on all my watches so I won’t be buying this despite how much I love it.

·

Cannot think of a reason to not buy a watch that I love that is not cost.

Just curious, but why the 100m water resistance requirement?

RM! 🤔🤨🤪

I love doing water sports and I have kids who love being in the water. I had a Swatch which had 50m wr that I went surfing with and water got in and it broke. I just decided that I didn’t want to have to worry about that and I’d just buy watches I could wear no matter what I was doing.

I would love this V&C overseas but the cost is crazy . I think the dial is so simple but stunning . My humble opinion of course ! I’d actually love to hear from anyone with visual , affordable alternatives to this piece 🎉

Interesting, even 50m wr possibly isn't sufficient for non-diving situations. I don't do much water sports, so have no idea. Thanks!

I might have been unlucky and the surf was very rough so if you’re just swimming or doing light stuff on the surface you’ll probably be okay but I don’t want to take the risk.

If I can afford it I will wear it 😂

I’ve recently fell in love with the Explorer and every time I go into my local AD I try it on. The thing is that I just bought a new Speedy for a milestone moment and can’t allow myself two new expensive watches. So the question is, will I ever be willing to give up my beloved Speedy? Probably not (I’m a space nerd). But where there’s a will, there’s a way…. Maybe I don’t have to get rid of it? Maybe sell the new Speedy and get an older used Speedy and an older Explorer? Will I regret it? How do I scratch the itch?! Aggghhh!

·

Interesting question..

I think the watch I love but wouldn’t buy is Rolex DayDate in either white or rose gold.

Simply because it’s too much in terms of bling/presence/statement etc. I also like watches that are abit more easy going and fun. Not having to worry about them at all.

That might sound hypocritical considering I have a Santos the ultimate scratch baby. But I think scratches and marks on a watch like that are shruggable but on a DayDate, I’d be hurt.

maybe it’s just me but i picture the Reverso as a dress watch. yes, i know it’s history of actually being a sports watch worn by polo players, but the modern day use of it is so…dressy. even dressed down with the textile straps that JLC makes nowadays, it still strikes me as dressier.

but with the Tank, simply putting a different strap on it totally changes the look and feel of it. just today i threw on a set of grey suede straps on the Tank and i wore it with shorts and dad shoes and it totally works. and it works equally well in a suit once i put on the stock black strap. it’s just super versatile. and because it’s so thin and light, i actually feel comfortable wearing it to do some light chores. today’s errand was going furniture shopping with the missus and i was lugging things around without worry that i was going to scuff up the watch. i dare say, the Cartier Tank can be a do-it-all watch. almost - i wouldn’t take it into the water.

Image

I’ve never thought of the Tank as a strap monster but it looks great on the suede strap and definitely more casual than the standard black calfskin.

I’ve tried it on the metal bracelet too and although it was very chunky, it had the same effect.

The Pepsi GMT you highlight is the watch I love and will never own. Don't get me wrong. I'd definitely risk life and limb and wear it but I'm now 4 years on the waiting list at my AD where I bought 2 other watches full retail. A few weeks ago, my AD offered me a Tudor Pelagos 39 from out back (none in display out front) because that would be available to a "customer like me". When I asked to see if my wait listed Pepsi might be out back or might be coming sometime, he sadly shook his head (Tudor worthy but not Rolex).

At this point, not sure that I would get it even if I got the call because I caved and got the Tudor Pepsi GMT (which I love) last year. Maybe my AD will let me switch my Pepsi spot for the Batman (why not 😜, no watch is no watch regardless of which list you're on).

Your local AD sounds like a pretentious d!@$!

The salesperson at my AD is actually a really nice guy. He greets me by name whenever I come in the store and shows me new watches that have come in. He has never pressured me to buy a watch or hinted that if I were to buy more it might improve my chances at the Pepsi. In fact, when I put my name on the Pepsi list, he (honestly as it turns out) told me that the watch was among the most in demand models and that the waiting list was an interest list for the store and not something that would be fulfilled in order (no first come, first served).

I think my salesman knew I was a watch collector (and not a flipper) and was trying to do me a favor in case I had interest in another in-demand watch that wasn't on display but that he knew his store would sell to a customer like me.

Pepsis only going to certain good customers on the wait list is something I attribute to Rolex ADs and Rolex policies in general (which most of us are very familiar with already).

·

It seems AD’s policy for allocating high-demand watches is specific to themselves as mine local AD does go by FIFO list. I guess I was lucky to get mine in about 18 months (in 2019). That stated, I’ve heard stories ADs will make exceptions on occasion to allocate a high-demand watch to a customer in good-standing or one that has a special occasion coming up. Having a good relationship with the AD makes it much more possible. Apologies for assuming yours was treating you unkindly. There are many of those there too but glad yours isn’t one of them.

Milsub. Price is astronomical and there just aren't very many good examples left out there. It is pretty amazing that these could be had for VERY short money in the 80's and 90's.

·

I have wanted a polar Explorer II since I was a teenager. Back then it was the 16550/70. I really like the new 21/226570 and they are a better fit on my flat wide 19cm wrist but I just can’t go there. The Rolex hype and the way they have positioned themselves in the market are a complete turnoff to me. Also, wearing a Rolex would violate the only “rule” my wife has about watches… Don’t buy/wear anything that will make you a target.

·

I'll take it! ✔

·

Anything expensive. Not because of cost, but because of fear of damaging the watch. They are meant to be worn and I just know I would keep expensive pieces locked away to "protect" them.

·

MB&F - love Max’s crazy creations but don’t see myself ever having 50 or a 100k on hand for a watch.

·

Lange. Any of their offerings. Even if I sell organs, I'll never afford one.

·
Tinfoiled14

Yes but mainly just due to the cost 🙂 My favourite would be the ALS Odysseus & The Omega Grey Side of the Moon , I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving them at home without worrying about them being filched or feel comfortable wearing them anywhere I might get knocked on the head for them 🙂

Oh yes. Agree, agree, agree on the Odysseus. That, and Zeitwerk. Oh my. Lange is my all time favorite, but I'll sooner find the Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail than possess these. Lol.

Love the Pepsi on a Jubilee

A first gen. Panerai Mare Nostrum: gorgeous watch and stunning dark brown dial - but for me (and maybe also Arnold Schwarzenegger) 52mm is a tiny little bit too much...

An unreachable dream. A Rolex GMT Master and Submariner made in September 1967. Box, papers, all the links. For the price of a Casio AE-1200 preferably. I would throw in my 1000/soon to have 1100/1300/1400 and 1500 if needed.

More realistic a Hanhart, Promaster Orca and Barnacle, Seiko Arnie, Alpinist and one of the new Willards, Hamilton, Marathon.

Just seen this post so I’ll fire away, all be it 7 months late..

The omega constellation globe master. It’s the dream!! But I ain’t got the doe so I shall plough on🤷🏻😂
