Why do people stand in line to get into Rolex ADs?

The other day, I went to the mall and passed by the Rolex store in the mall (London Jewelers, NJ). I noticed that there were about five to seven people standing in line just to get into the store. This made me curious, and I wondered why people would spend their valuable time waiting for something they would have to pay a hefty price for (even if they had the money; Rolex prices are not cheap). I continued my way through other stores like Patek Philippe, IWC, Breitling, Omega, and Cartier. In none of those other stores was there a wait, and I must admit I wanted to see some Rolexes just for the fun of it, but besides my family and the other things I value the most is my time; there is no price for it.

So, have you waited in line just to get in? Did you find it rewardable?

Because they are kooks and are all looking to get Panda Daytona because the internet told them so 🙄

·

If this is the Short Hills Mall, it's a security reason. All the luxury shops now have a limited amount of people allowed in the store at once because of the threat of smash and grabs. It is a huge pain but this is America now.

·

As a scrub collector I can't really talk but I don't know why anyone would wait for Rolex when the more elegant Patek is right there.

·

I do not understand it, being an Omega person.

·

The heart want what it wants! But I cant really speak! Where Im from, we love standing in line! Never had to in order to get into a Rolex store! I would if there wasnt too many people!

·

Ah, it would be a beautiful world where only Rolex customers would be denied their needs. 😀

·

I don't need to wait in line for my local Rolex AD but I would wait in line to see a potential watch I'm interested in purchasing in the flesh if possible, dont want to have buyers remorse blind buying as this hobby isn't cheap

·

I lived in Singapore for a few years. It was very common to see people in line waiting to enter luxury stores like Prada, Balenciaga, Rolex, etc. Empty stores with a crowd outside waiting to be received to have a chance to buy an extremely expensive piece of luxury. I never understood it.

·

Im going to buy used from a reputable place

I prefer to build the watches I like. Only waiting was at the mail box

·

Rolex... Roll on. Don't want to own one never mind queue up to look at one

Yes, it was there, and you're correct; it's for security reasons. Someone just sent me the news about the incident with a Dior Store that is right in front of the Rolex store in this mall. Crazy times we are living in. 😔

There was no line when i purchased mine

·

Nothing is worth so much as to do that. All your doing is trying to buy your way into the "in-crowd." So no, I'll keep my Hamilton, Bulova, Seikos, Timex and Invictas, thank you.

·

Yeah I would never wait, even at my local ad.

But I recently had an experience. I was having dinner with some cool people, and a guy I know who has 2 Rolex watches, was talking about buying watches. And he says, no point in buying other brands because no one knows what they are. He's not a pretentious guy, not really. And everyone at the table nodded their heads in agreement. It made perfect sense to them. They are not watch nuts like us. That's the public perception.

Some stores have adopted the concept of only as many customers as there are sales agents available to cater to the potential shoppers’ needs. A few years ago my wife wanted to shop for a bag that was not available on line or any brick and mortar boutique here in Canada, nice chance for a mini vacation trip to Paris where we were asked to queue for a few moments before we were escorted into the ancient shop at Rue Sainte Honore. I chatted with a nice lady who was a massive Georgia Bulldogs NCAA football fan, who was escaping from her family for a few hours of personal time. Not sure I would wait to enter any Rolex shop knowing that I will not be actually buying a watch. Seems pointless.

·

Two of the last three times I went to Rolex (Melbourne, Australia) I was asked to wait out the front because all the SA’s were busy. I didn’t

I don’t have an issue with Rolex nor do I think they play games relating to availability - that’s the retailers.

I like both Explorers but they’re not at the top of my list so I don’t feel the need wait in line (or on a list) to get one.

If they’re ever at the top of my want list I’d wait on a list - but not in line to get into a store. Fuck that.

·

Visited one in Honolulu, and I was the only customer in the store. The "ambassador" who attended to me was perfectly respectful and gave me her time. Not the experience I was expecting after hearing so many stories of less enjoyable experiences.

·

I’m British so queuing is a national sport… but if I’m about to drop 10k on a watch and have been on a waitlist for 6 months…

Yeah nah

·

A queue to join a list!

·

EBays my AD pre owned all day baby, bring out the cheap panties, keep the red ones 😂👍

·

A queue to join a list!

Stand there, hurry up and WAIT ✋️

·

I haven’t seen this at a Rolex AD yet, but I did see something similar during COVID at expensive/boutique store brands. If I were to see something like this, I would just go home and make an appointment 😅

·

Probably because the boutique is full of other customers and the limit due to security reasons is reached. And you have no booked appointment.

I think it’s more the wallet than the heart in most cases !

They are nuts too, just in a different way.

If that was the Short Hills Mall, London Jewelers has Tudor and Patek with no line. The Rolex AD is next door and has a velvet rope and two guys at the door even when it’s empty. It’s kinda stupid—especially since they have no stock actually for sale.
