Have you ever wondered why Tourbillon is still so expensive?

Tourbillon watches are renowned for their captivating and mesmerizing hypnotic power effect. However, it is important to acknowledge that acquiring one comes with a substantial financial investment. Despite being an obsolete and practically unnecessary complication in contemporary horology, tourbillon watches continue to command a high price point.

This is definitely a must-watch video I wanted to share with you, my fellow crunchers.

Enjoy it.

This video shows zero "business" nouse and swallows the "it's so expensive because of the intricate mechanisms and hand finishing" marketing nonsense hook, line and sinker.

Swiss tourbillons are so expensive because:

  • That luxury brand's marketing budget ain't going to pay for itself.

  • They're Veblen goods. The higher the price, the higher the demand. Produce tiny numbers, make massive margins.

Totally agree on that one. When Breitling manages to offer split second chronographs for ~10K, then other companies should be able to offer tourbillions at the same or even a lower price.

Funnily enough the video fails to mention that you can buy an entirely functional tourbillon for $250.

I guess a quick Google by the journalist was defeated by the impressive forces of the "haute horlogerie" PR departments.

That’s the problem when non watch focused journalists do a watch related documentary. Watches are such a complex topic, we enthusiasts will always complain.
