My boring rolex , I think I made peace with it

Almost coming up to a year with the explorer. There has been moments when I had serious doubts about keeping it because it is sooo boring. I would often put it way and see if I would miss it. I think I would last 2-3 days before I would yarn for it and as soon as I put it on I would have a delightful smile. I think I have made peace with it. If you want a boring one watch for life you can’t go wrong with this. I love the simplicity and versatility of this watch.

How do you decide to keep it or not?

The Explorer is my personal favorite Rolex (alongside the GMT Master II). The simplistic design is part of its charm and why I like it. It’s more discrete and doesn’t draw attention. To most people, they probably won’t recognize it as a Rolex. But those who know will know it’s an Explorer. Good to know you’ve come to know your watch 👍🏻

I've said it here before, there is beauty in simplicity.

This is the only Rolex I’d ever consider buying. Simplicity at its finest 👌

·

It is so simple but that’s also where it shines - it has no frills and is upfront about what it is. There’s something undeniably alluring about it all the same.

·

If it were the two tone one, would you like it more?

·

I have a sub-date, even more boring...

·

I do love the Explorer. Not too flash. The benchmark luxury field watch. I own a black dial smooth bezel datejust which is my other favourite Rolex for the same reasons!

·

Is that a 36 or 40? Either way I think it looks great. The Explorer and polar E2 are the only two Rolexes I want.

·

Isn’t that literally the point of classic designs. They are boring but classic. The Cartier Tank. Even the Rolex Sub. No pops of color. No twirly turbs. No lumed up ghosts. No pizza toppings. Just pure class. Looks good in the 60s still looks good today

·

I went through the same phase after owning it for a while. Then I started wearing it more and something in my brain switched on and I recognized the inherent beauty of high quality and simplicity.

Then my wife took it to our AD and had it sized for herself so I haven’t had to think about it since.

36

Not boring at all, it's one of the best in my humble opinion.

·

I’ve got a Conquest that has a lot of Explorer DNA. I’ve thought of upgrading to an Explorer on several occasions, but think I’m happy for now. The date is useful too.

The simplicity is not really the issue. The issue is: how much watch are you getting for your money? In Rolex's price range the complications barely contribute to the price, unless you look for the likes of a perpetual calendar. In essence, 90% of the money you pay is for the name on the dial.

·

I think it's Adrian Barker who put it best: "I know! but there is character in that boringness"

Pictures of Explorers rarely do justice to the refinement of the piece. The way the light reflects on the numerals and indices is amazing. The proportions of the case, the dial, the bracelet are sooo damn perfect!

Ok, I'm biased. I've had mine for less than a month, but it just feels right. It feels like the watch I could wear every day to the end.

I agree...kinda.

In addition to the name on the dial, you are getting amazing design, impeccable finish, and legendary quality.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think current Rolex prices are justified in any way. I owned several Rolexes back in the 70s and 80s when they were expensive...but not ridiculous. Love their designs and fit and finish. Their accuracy, their durability and their legendary status. Hate their current prices and waiting list games, etc..

I do think the Explorer is a classically beautiful GADA watch. For the very wealthy who don't mind Rolex's poor treatment of their customers.

The Explorer is exactly what it is meant to be..A watch you can have for years that does the job beautifully...Be happy and enjoy the hobby!!!

·

I really love the legibility of this particular model. Sure, it’s a Clydesdale not an Arabian…but I appreciate its robustness. It’s a perfect example of GADA watch.

·

I wouldn’t call it boring, it at the very least “wasn’t made” for a boring lifestyle!

·

Nothing boring about simple perfection 👌! There is a reason this watch is an Icon

·

I wouldn’t call it boring. I think the Explorer has a simple and classy design. No frills. But still awesome!

·

I’m on the waitlist for one

·

Keep or sell for me is a balance of emotions and money. Sometimes I buy a watch and don't want to pull from the bank so it forces me to sell something that's currently in the collection.

·

Nothing boring about it. It’s simple and to the point. I’m a fan due to its simplicity.

·

Satisfyingly simple sleeper. Enjoy! Yet to get tired of somewhat dated Explorer!

There is something beautiful about a watch that just works with just about everything you decide to wear

·

Boring has its place. It's only boring because so many have imitated it and it's not meant to be in your face with bright colors, fluted bezel and/or jubilee. Enjoy it for what it is.

To me, I’d not keep a watch when that smile so simply not drawn on my face anymore.
