What's your favorite price tier?

At what price point do you derive the most enjoyment from this hobby? For instance, I lust after watches in the $5-10K range, but I know that it would take me at least two years to afford anything in that spectrum and I don't have that kind of patience, so I often buy more affordable pieces. I think the $1,000-2,000 range offers the most interesting selection in this hobby. That price point is where the higher end micro brands reside and you get some quality swiss pieces in that range too. I just find the selection in this range to be the most interesting. But people's tastes may differ, so I'm just curious where you find yourself spending your time (and money) in this hobby.

Too many hobbies! <$1000 for me!

·

I currently haven't paid more than €150 for any of my watches. I'm happiest buying watches that I can wear without having to worry about being robbed.

·

I have 6 that I wear regularly, 4 of which are <$1k. I like that the designs are less serious...

I find that the quality of a $1500 watch often rivals that of a $5,000 watch. There are differences, sure, but to me, they aren't that material and I feel like I'm getting more value in this price tier. I enjoy sub $500 watches, but I find that after I buy them, I feel like I have wasted my money that could have been better spent on a higher priced piece.

·

For me, the sweet spot is about $1-2K. I think that above $2K you get nicer watches, but there is a significantly more noticeable diminishing return on each dollar spent.

To my mind the gap in quality between a $500 watch and a $1000 watch, is greater than the quality gap between a $1000 watch and a $5000 dollar watch.

Sweet spot for my tastes runs $600-$2500.

I think there's wonderful pieces in each of the prices ranges you offered. It's just about connecting with the right watch for you that also fits your budget. Your poll results (so far) reflect the financial situation I think the bulk of enthusiasts are in, under $1k. If you were to break it down further, I'll bet most of us are in the $10 to $500 range!

I have a lot of watches I really enjoy that were just a few bucks relatively speaking — under 400 bucks. I mean…the dials and hands and markers and finishing looks great on these watches. Plus, they seem just as ‘alive’ as a more expensive cousin. In the end, we all have to powder up regardless of our caste level. I think, anthropomorphically anyway, I also attribute that to the caste level of watches.

The price tier Nomos and Tudor live at..

Any higher than that is the same as I might have 1 very expensive leather jacket but that's the one thing I can indulge on.

·

When I started getting into watches, up to $1000 seemed right.

These days, used watches around $3000 are my sweet spot. So watches that were originally sold above that price to some degree, but which you can pick up in a used condition around $3000. The top two watches in my current collection - that get nearly all my wrist time - are precisely examples of that.

Once you break that $1000 cherry, it's hard to go back.

See, this is what I love about watch nerds. I hear there's a lot of negativity on the watch internet in general, but here it's straight-up nerds. The guy with the Rolex also loves his digital shark, and I dig that.

Nothing like a new good cheap Casio that I can mess around with.

I have to do a hard reality-check from time to time, when I start looking at a watch priced like a small car and going "That looks like good value".

I'm an engineer by trade. You don't get into engineering because of the boat-loads of cash they throw at you, that's for certain.

I got my first 'luxury' watch last year, so I guess I'm still in the honeymoon phase. It took months of saving, not buying more-affordable watches, and lots of convincing by my wife, before I finally acheived it.

I'll be the first to agree, if you buy a watch for its specs, there is very little to justify the extra thousands of money-units the high-end watch carries. But, it terms of subtle refinement, attention to all the details and quality, there is a noticeable difference.

And the feeling on your wrist. Oh, the feeling of looking down and seeing THAT WATCH on your wrist. That's something you can't put a price tag on.

·

If it wasn't a concern I'd always hang at the $5k+ range. I often think if I could only keep 1 watch it would be my Omega Aqua Terra, which is listed at $5,700, even thought I got it for just under $5k at the AD. If I were to add another tier I'd say $3k to $6k is a great range.

·

As others have pointed out, quality tends to increase along with price, but the improvements tend to also become smaller. Most of the watches in my regular rotation are above $5K, but I also have some in the <$1K range that I get just as much enjoyment from. My Zelos Spearfish with the burnt orange dial was $750 USD, and is one of my favorite watches in my collection. It may not have the same feeling of quality as many of my more expensive watches, but it certainly feels more premium than it's price tag suggests, and I find it to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing watches in my collection.

I can’t justify spending over $1000 for a watch. This is just my opinion, but more than that feels like a waste of money, especially with what you can get for under a grand these days.
