I Hate Watch Snobs

Here I have purposely put two of my watches from my collection of over 35 watches - On one hand my precious Rolex Datejust 41 in Everose Gold and on the right my cheapest tourbillon in the world made in China under 500 dollars - The reason I put these two together is to show that I genuinely dont give a damn about prices and brands as I am a true watch lover. And I know most of you also don't. But here I have noticed some watch snobs too who would comment on watches by saying things like "cheap chinese/malaysian seiko" or those sarcastic laughing emojis - To them I would like to say "get a life? you are not a watch enthusiast or watch lover, you are simply a watch snob!" - I know most of the people here are humble and genuine lovers of watches and I just want to say this to everyone - I am interested and love to see even your 5 dollar watch - it doesnt matter. If its special for you and it has a story then that watch is special and you belong to this community of watch lovers - Never let anyone tell you that just because your watch isnt of a certain brand or a price point they have a right to insult or ridicule you. They are scumbags - Ignore them!!!!!

Kindness begets kindness. If you didn't tell me that tourbillion was $500, I would have guessed a couple thousand. Nice pair.

Sadly we’re going to see snobs across the board. For the most part, I don’t see it as often on this forum as I’ve seen on other forums.

Me personally, I just don’t feed into the nonsense. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized other people’s opinion doesn’t impact me, but learn to be respectful to one another.

·

It’s a lot about design and aesthetic. Can one be an aesthetic snob? Yes that is reasonable but being a price snob is ironically low class!

Definitely - I was referring to the point where people start showing or literally imposing their own perceived authority or expertise on other people's taste or choices trying to de-mean watch brand or lack of it

exactly - especially for something as subjective as watch collection or choices

Well said and I’m with you on this all the way sir! 👏🏻👏🏻

I’m about the watch 💯

Snobbery is just a manifestation of insecurity.

I like what I like, & ain't too fussed what y'all think.

Wear what you love & love what you wear.

Bingo! It’s all preference. What I like, the next person may not like, and that’s fine. We all just need to be respectful of one another.

Exactly - in fact i love to wear some of the cheapest watches that i have purchased on Ebay with my suit and to carry them off with love and respect gives a different kind of a high to a watch enthusiast - its all about dials and the aesthetics for me but also acknowledging that others may have completely different idea of aesthetics or preferences and thats perfectly fine

·

I will remain a reverse snob regardless.

·

I quite fancy being a snob. I think I could be quite good at it.

Are there lessons I could take?

I think that anyone who judges you as a person for either watch is an idiot.

Rant warning:

Emojis are way inferior to language. I'd rather read a sentence of reply than 20 emojis.

Also I reckon many emojis are generated just by people clicking what others have clicked. Or are an almost reflexive reaction. (I've also been known to do this).

I wouldn't put much stock in the reactions - it's just folks on a watch app.

We (I) dont see alot of that on this site..now REDDIT is another story.. Enjoy the hobby..

Decent enough post until the last sentence.

Sorry I called scumbags, scumbags - wasnt trying to be "decent" - just honest

·

Great post. I actually love collecting cheap watches. I’ve bought 2 seikos for under 40 dollars, and they probably have had more time on my wrist then my more expensive watches

·

Totally agree with the sentiments.

I do think there is a difference between slagging a watch because it is inexpensive and calling out poorly made watches.

I have no problem if someone tells me a watch is shite because it’s poorly manufactured regardless of its price. I did this myself concerning the Stauer jump hour watch…I feel compelled to let people know something is poorly constructed and defective before they spend over $100 on it. There are many fantastic watches that can be purchased for $100 or less.

I would not forgive myself for letting someone purchase a defective watch that could put them off from collecting watches.

So, don’t insult the origin or price of the watch, but if it is poorly made then objectively let people know.

Uh, can we make a distinction between snobbery and preference? So far, I've not really seen any real snobbery here, just a passionate defense of one's taste. I think that's fine. You like one watch I like something else. But I've not seen anyone say,"Those whose watches are below 10,000 USD are peasants" -- or anything close to that. I've seen "homages are for fools" comments. Okay, a bit extreme but I don't see that as snobbery at all. Can't other people state an opinion about their thing as passionately as you or I state ours?

What's not cool, as people here said, is rudeness, which admittedly I have seen here. Ad hominem attacks are never okay. Saying my taste in watches leaves much to be desired, I can take. You don't even need the disclaimer"buy what you like it's your money" as far as I'm concerned. But calling me an idiot for spending my money, that I earned, the way I want to spend it on things that matter only to me I refuse to accept.

There was a whole thread making fun of Rogan/Musk for not understanding how a mechanical watch works. Putting down people for whatever reason is uncalled for. It in my opinion was untasteful and snobby.

·

I confess; I am an absolute snob. I don't care about the value of the watch, all I am interested in is the design. So yes, if you dare post a Frogman, you get a laughing emoji from me. So there!

·

There are a lot of comments here and I haven’t read them all, so maybe somebody’s already said this. I agree with you, but I also think some watches are actually cheap. There are great watches for $300 and $100 and $50, but there are also junky watches at those prices and many others. I always look for value more than price. That is, as long as I can afford it, I’m looking at whether I think I’m getting something good for my money. I think a brand like Oris sells very good watches at decent prices because they don’t have a name like Omega or Rolex. To me that’s value. But then again, Omega and Rolex make watches nobody else does, so there can be value there as well.

As for judging the watches of others, I absolutely think some people have ugly/cheap/overpriced watches, but I make it a point not to say so. I will criticize a watch in general, and I’m sorry if that bothers anyone. What I won’t do is criticize your watch. When anyone posts about a watch I don’t like, I either comment on a part of it I like or I keep quiet. I don’t see any value in telling somebody their watch is stupid. It’s childish and people do it to make themselves feel superior. And I think that’s pathetic.

As always, wear what you love.

I confess I skipped that thread coz I wasn’t interested. Imagine a newb signing up here and seeing that people made fun of others for not understanding something. How comfortable would they be in staying? Do muscle car enthusiasts make fun of the poor saps who drive electric? Maybe they do. Doesn’t make it right.

It's the same with any art form. Take music snobbery: a lot of people are into Taylor Swift or Beyonce; others are into Symphony X, or The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. But is one objectively superior to the other ? Is it simply what gives one pleasure and leave it at that, or does one need to get 'educated' to appreciate that there are aesthetic, objective differences ? Subjectivity is perception, not reality? Some people dig 'Modern Art'; others fine Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Go figure, but you can't judge a person's character by their taste, or can you....? (Agree though with a previous poster, that price snobs are a rather vulgar entity).

·

Nice my friend 🔥and its only people's insecurities, comes across in a way that pushes people away they really just want a hug and acceptance 😂we all need help in some form, some people feel the need to stand on others and try and be above not realising that those actions actually put them underneath who there trying to put down, understated elegance and flexing when only you know your flexing is the biggest flex, and means your some what secure 😎👌

Kindness begets kindness. If you didn't tell me that tourbillion was $500, I would have guessed a couple thousand. Nice pair.

I really thought that tourbillion was a couple of 1000 bucks too.

·

That's such a cool constellation watch! Looks so killer and for that price!

·

I think there are times when a friendly piece of advice is in order. Someone buying a bunch of cheap watches will have to be told that the cost to service or replace the movements for them all is probably more than the watches are worth.

There is also a valid point to say that people should not be buying stuff that is destined for landfill.

Saying that, I agree with the general sentiment of this post deriding people who use watches to elevate their own status at the expense of others. That's not on.

·

In every culture there will intersectional disparity and judgement based by personal prerogatives. Fortunately, I see very little here on this app. It's more love and respect. Focus on those energies.

·

One of my favorite watches was $60 on Ali Express...

·

Honestly I've really been wanting one of this Ali express tourbillions 😆

I reached out to several brands but none would send me one for review 😆

Fingers crossed, I'll get my hands on one eventually 🍺
