Rare flea market win

Sup' fellow Crunchers!

Been lurking for a while but felt like I didn't have anything too exciting to share as I'm still at the very beginning of my watch enthusiast journey. The only mechanical watch I owned thus far was a blue dial Tissot PRX Powermatic, which I still love but not exactly something that people on here haven't seen before.

After scouring several flea markets in my area in the hope of finding some burried watch treasures I finally got lucky. I found this 1990 Oris Pointer Date in a pile of dime store quartz watches. The person selling it told me he had bought it in Basel in '92 but didn't really know much about the watch apart from that (he said it's automatic - it's not, he said it was on its original strap - it wasn't). Obviously you always take a bit of a gamble with vintage watches but seeing how he only wanted 80€ for it I couldn't just leave it there. I'm willing to admit that I didn't know much about the watch at the time but obviously recognized the brand name and had a feeling it might be worth SLIGHTLY more than that, even if it has a few battle scars. Obviously took it home with me and I'm happy to report that it runs suprisingly well.

I have no fancy equipment here to accurately measure everything but it runs at about +-15 seconds a day which is good enough for me. Gave it a brand new strap since the old one was hanging on for dear life and I didn't really like it anyway. Not 100% sold on the strap yet but it's a bit tricky to find fancy 19mm straps. I was also worried a 37mm case would look small on my very hairy 6,5" wrist but turns out it wears perfectly fine and makes me think I should probably lean more towards smaller watches.

TL;DR: Bought a vintage Oris for 80€ which is probably worth at least 5 times as much or more.

Lucky catch man!!! 37 is just fine for your wrist I hace a one of 7 inches and I wear also 34 mm watches, I love vintage, and in general better a little smaller than a little too big.

Have you checked the movement?

Have you checked the movement?

Haven't opened it up yet and don't see a reason to as long as it runs fine. If it croaks on me in a couple of years I can live with the 80€ I spent on it. 😁

(Movement should be an ETA 2691 according to my research)

Damn...I need to go to more flea markets where you are!

·

Score!

·

Nice, looks like you've done well there - seems pretty well preserved from these shots. Probably worth taking for an independent service given its vintage but if you're happy with the time keeping...

Love that onion crown!

Well then, send me your lucky coin or whatever...I want to score that kind of find!

·

Bargain! And 37 looks good to me

·

Great find!! delugs make a lot of 19mm straps in case you want to search for other ones!

·

Def a find!!! Enjoy!

·

@Dogecahedron - damn, what a find! Congratulations and wear in good health!

·

What a find! 👍

·

Yeah, I'll add my voice -- excellent find. Love those Oris pointer dates. Cool to see an earlier vintage.

·

80€ that's a steal! I would say around 300 500€ is market price for that sort of pointer date. Please let a watchmaker service it and enjoy. Thoses are great under the radar watches. Here is my oris from the 90s ref 7427-40. That's a 34mm by the way.

I was thinking the same thing, if that is indeed a real Oris for $87 USD that's one hell of a find. My guess it's a Frankin Watch? But who knows crazy things have happened.

That thought has crossed my mind too. On further inspection I really don't think so though. I can't say anything about the movement yet as I don't have the neccesary tools to open it but at least the case, caseback, crown, dial and hands are all original.

Still for the price it’s not bad. Please post pics of the movement once you get the case back open.
