Love, lust and watches

Not a truer word was spoken than when a fellow cruncher stated that to apply rationality to watch collecting is an exercise in futility. It can be an emotional rollercoaster of love affairs. Instant attractions, impulsive lust-driven purchases, long and slow-burning grail romances, the thrill of the chase, painful regrets, those that got away and finding 'the one'. I think this is why many of us play this ridiculous watch collecting game.

For fun, tell me, from watches either in your current collection or not:

1. Your object of lust (the watch you are currently obsessing over)

2. Your long term slow-burning desire (a watch that's held your love and attention for some time)

3. Your 'enemies to lovers' story (a watch you disliked initially, or that your common sense tells you you shouldn't like but has started to grow on you)

4. Your broken dreams watch (the one you had such high hopes for but something ruined it)

I'll go first:
1. My current obsessions can change almost on a daily basis. Today it is this glorious and unapologetic Tissot PRX gold 35mm

Image

Since I can't have this...

Image

2. Fears Brunswick

Image

But it's going to have to be VERY slow burning until I own one because I'm not sure I could ever justify the money for it new and you never see them used.

3. Unpopular opinion: The Omega Speedmaster

Image

They seem too obvious and unimaginative a choice, everyone seems to have one and Fortis do great space watches for considerably less. But... I just can't help but adore them!

4. Alsta Nautoscaph: The Jaws watch.

Image

I love movies and watches related to them and I obsessed over this watch for ages, but when I finally got to try it on there were just no sparks flying 😔

Tell me your stories...

(This is the kind of post you get after I've binge watched 4 episodes of Bridgerton)

@Deeperblue, what an absolutely amazing thread!

Well THIS is fun on a Wed.

1) Hot and heavy: Longines Zulu Time. The dial depth and colors and movement... and now I’m sweating. (Photo cred @IanCognito)

Image

2) Long and slow: SLGH005 White Birch. Because those lines are SO mean…

Image

3) Hate to love (kinda): Tudor BB Pro. I know that it’s an Explorer copy, and a little lazy at that, and it’s somewhat basic and all the rage right now blah, blah, blah… but I can’t look away. I really dig the ‘I only drink back coffee and travel the world wearing just an old Gap jacket” vibe it’s putting down.

4) Broken dreams: GS SBGM221 GMT. I don’t think you can find better finishing and a better package for the $$. I watched and read reviews over and over and finally went to try one on at an AD… only to realize it really DOES have beautiful case polishing 360 degrees around. I’m one of those freaks who can’t handle scratches well and I realized standing next to the sales assoc. that if I went forward it would likely plunge me into Xanax dependence and therapy debt. My favorite question on WatchCrunch so far!

  1. My current obsession/lust: Omega CK859
Image

There are others, but I'm not allowed to talk about them.  🤫

2. My long-term desire...  We'll at Watchtime 2019, I spent about an hour talking to Romain Gauthier, and the watch he was wearing was a red gold insight micro rotor on a fitted black rubber strap.  It literally blew my mind, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.

Unfortunately, this long-term desire is fated to remain story of unrequited love.  Alas...

(BTW, he was amazingly generous with his time, and after talking to him, I understand why his watches costs what they do.)

Image

3. Enemies to lovers: the royal oak, and almost every single Rolex, and dive watches as a general category.

4. Broken dreams watch was the Grand Seiko sbgh267.

Image

In most pictures it has a blue (almost slate blue) look to it. In real life, the watch has a purple undertone.  Even though I love the design, as a personal matter of taste, I wasn't into it... And honestly, I felt sad when I left the Seiko boutique.  It was weird to have a feeling of loss for something that I never owned.

Cool idea for a thread.

1) Current Obsession.
JLC Polaris Chronograph.
I've always been a fan of JCL, and chronographs are my favorite complication. After seeing a very reasonably priced LNIB model available for sale, I've been trying to decide if I want to make an offer.

Image

2) Long Term Desire
JLC Reverso Tribute Duoface with blue dial.
I really like rectangular shaped watches, and I think I prefer the Reverso over the Cartier Tank. The Duoface models are my favorite, since they kinda offer two watches in one.
If I had more opportunity to wear a dress watch, I'm pretty sure this would be part of my collection.

Image

3) Took a while
Omega Speedmaster Pro (Moonwatch).
I never understood the appeal of the Moonwatch for the first few years of my watch obsession, but over time it started to grow on me. After trying on the new sapphire sandwich model at my AD last year, I made a spur of the moment decision to buy it on the spot. I did have some moments of buyers remorse, but those are long gone, and I'm very glad I bought it.

Image

4) Broken dreams
My only "broken dream" watch had nothing to do with the watch model, but rather the specific watch. I had picked up a vintage Wakmann chronograph because I loved the salmon colored dial. After purchasing the watch, and trying to research more info about it, I discovered that it was a bad redial. I paid a bit more than I should have, but I still like the look of the watch, and the lesson learned was worth it.

Slow burn is a Sinn 104 in a cool colorway (blue or green). Still want to see in person someday

Enemy to lover, but still not sure 🤔  … a blacked out goofball rapper watch that’s hard to read but looks cool when I see it on me

And Broken dreams… 🤔

Well, I guess dress watches.  I want to like them, but just can’t seem to like them.

Figured Bridgerton was pure chick flick - but with your $0.02 I'll check it out!

It’s best to watch it with a chick. My wife loves period costume shows and movies - like Downton Abbey. But, what makes this show different is:

  •  It’s entirely whimsical. Just a whole heck of a lot of fun, without any of the angst or period-faithful drudgery
  • Every single character is incredibly sympathetic. Again, it’s designed to be fantastical, so there’s no need to make the characters like real human beings - which means they’re likable and genuinely good people deep down inside, whereas we know that real people are horrible and wretched at heart
  • Each season focuses on a different protagonist. So, the MAIN protagonists from season 1 barely show up (1 dude left the show entirely) in season 2. Because of this structure, the show is forced to develop ALL the secondary characters to such an extent that they’re all fully realized, as these secondary characters will eventually be the protagonist of one of the future seasons
  • Finally, they’re all super hot. Like mind-blowingly hot. So, every episode is just eye candy. Like, my wife, half way through season 2 was yelling at the TV, “Come on! Just take off your clothes already!”

A fine collection there 👌

I know it's stating the obvious, but GS dials are just breath taking. I could just stand and stare in the AD window all day

That gets me put on the 'bad' kind of AD list though... The one without a watch at the end...

🤣 That's brilliant. So so often (if not every time?) I view and buy watches in terms of how they are going to make me feel while I'm wearing them. Your description is spot on for the Tudor 👍

I've not heard of Romain Gauthier and his watches before... Maybe I should check them out.... or maybe it will only result in more emotional turmoil 🤦

I have to admit, I am similar with my Rolex relationship. Ravishingly good-looks but arrogant as hell. You don't want to find them attractive and you know you'll get treated badly... but just can't help but want them and secretly hope that maybe they'll change.

A second hand JLC is a stretch goal of mine at some point I think. The Reverso just looks beautiful and even more so in the metal.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about the speedy. When I first saw it in person I understood the hype.

I got a tab open with the 35mm golden PRX for the same reason as you 🤣 My obsessions change daily... Today I have been thinking I'll just save up for Tudor BB36 and don't buy anything for a loooong time 🤔

Yep. I have those "I'm gonna save up now" thoughts. "I'm gonna finally get that Fears/Speedmaster. Would take me about a year or two of saving... I could do that" But then I see this...

Image

And this...

Image

And this...

Image

And I could have them all for a fraction of the cost of that one 'luxury' watch, and it sends me out of my mind deciding what I want 😱

·

The BB36 isn't too expensive, but I think I would have a hard time actually using the money on my self when I got a house, car and family that always needs something.. but maybe the bb36 used is within the limits of what I could manage 🤔

·
YourIntruder

Hmm. Love and passion. I think with age I look on my line-up more like a royal arrangement marriage from 18th century. I will reuse @tempus   heading. Hope that’s OK. My first two are expensive watches. But if I can have one before I quit I’d be pleased.

1 Current obsession

At the moment it’s more of a family affair than one particular passion, JLC. I’m between the Polaris and the Mastercontrol Calendar. It’s hard to choose but with my arm twisted I would yell Mastercontrol.

Image

2 Long term desire

I have to say steel Rolex Daytona in black. I’m not a fanatic Rolex fanboy but the Daytona have been on my mind since I started collecting. It’s not a definit grail or exit watch but it will probably be one of my last purchase. I will not buy one on the pre-loved market and I don’t think my AD will consider me for a very, very long time.

Image

3 Took a while

I have to agree on the Omega Speedmaster with you @Deeperblue .   What’s not  to like I thought. Well over the years I tried it on and it never clicked with me. Too flat in ”colors” and depth. Until the new release. Now I really can see myself with one. But we will be more like friends than having a love affair.

Image

4 Broken dreams

I must say my Seiko SKX013. Great looking watch but too small and too thick, for me. We split up.

Image

It's quite funny that you should mention the Daytona as a long term obsession. When I was thinking about it, the Daytona didn't even pop into my mind, even though it's a watch that I've wanted since before I was seriously interested in watches, and would definitely qualify as my real long term desire. I have a thing for chronographs, and it can be traced back to my desire for a Daytona. I think the reason that it didn't come to mind, is that I've given up on ever owning one. My AD is upfront about it, telling me that based on how many they get compared to how many people are asking for one, I'd need to live to be well over 100 years old before I got the call. If I ever had a chance to purchase at MSRP I'd jump on it, but that's not going to happen.

Lust: Grand Seiko and SBGA415 Winter

This watch checks a lot of boxes for my collection: Grand Seiko, titanium, Spring Drive, not 41mm like the Snowflake, silver dial, can be dressed up. I want this watch for my 30th birthday but doubt the economy will improve by then

Slow burn: Rolex GMT-Master II Batman

This watch will take my GMT slot but it’s unlikely I’ll get one at MSRP any time soon, so I’ll stay patient

Enemy to Lover: Cartier Tank

Watch enjoyment is heavily swayed by anecdotes and associations. Before becoming interested in watches, I’ve always known Cartier as a jeweller, not a watchmaker, and associated rectangular watches with women, not men. After learning about Cartier’s history with the Santos, and seeing the archetypal man, Muhammad Ali, wearing a Tank, I admire this watch a lot more

Broken dreams: Casioak

I get a 40% off employee discount for work and got this watch for $60 and was super excited. I put it on and my fiancé told me it looked like a toy and that was the end of that

1. Your object of lust (the watch you are currently obsessing over)

The GS Suwa

2. Your long term slow-burning desire (a watch that's held your love and attention for some time)

Speedmaster First OMEGA In Space

3. Your 'enemies to lovers' story (a watch you disliked initially, or that your common sense tells you you shouldn't like but has started to grow on you)

My common sense says to not love watches that cost more than $500, but as you can see from 1 & 2, the heart wants what the heart wants.

4. Your broken dreams watch (the one you had such high hopes for but something ruined it)

Not a watch, but Watch Gang. I initially liked the thought of someone just sending me a watch each quarter, but then I got a watch with a sickly green dial and one with a brown dial & bezel. I realized that Watch Gang is just a way for brands/retailers to get rid of their mistakes in gauging demand for a style or color. BROWN, REALLY?!

·

1. Object of Desire (derived from the Latin, lust is derived from German, I have certain preferences):

I would lie, steal and cheat for this watch.  I may even kill.

2. Slow burn:

WTS] Glashutte Original Senator Sixties - Orange Dial : r/Watchexchange

I am standing at the top of Isengard looking into the my palantiri. I am bent to its will.

3. Enemy to lover:

ORIENT MAKO 3 RED COLLECTION RA-AA0003R AA0003R

I own exactly one diver.  I have very little use for them as a style of watch.  I plan to spend the rest of my life dry.  I did not have an "Orient phase". I have little to no use for bracelets.  Despite researching more expensive brands, I keep coming back to this.

Broken dreams:

Image 1 - Vintage Solid 18k OMEGA SEAMASTER DeVILLE Automatic Watch 1960s Cal.565* EXLNT

This isn't my watch.  I have one just like it.  Mine is in better condition.  I wore it nearly every day for almost a decade. It has now spent nearly nine of the last twelve months with the watchmaker. I want to get it from him so that I can send it to someone else and pay too much to get it working again.  Every time that it goes into the shop I start buying watches like a drunk sailor.  It is the only watch in my collection that I truly care about.

Late to the party!

  1. The Tudor Pelagos in its sexy titanium case is my current lust. Still need to see it and wear it in person though!
Image

2. The slow burn goes to the two-tone Bulgari Octo Roma. I thought it was too bold for me when I tried it ~3 years ago but I think I can handle it now! ... Or later when I'm a bit more mature...

Image

3. I honestly did not think that I would ever buy a watch bigger than 42mm, or a quartz watch but this little big fella changed my mind. I do think the titanium helped!

Image

4. I guess maybe this is a blessing in disguise but the Tudor Black Bay Heritage with the blue bezel. For me, the gilt dials didn't really tickle my fancy and this version really caught my eye.

However real life kicked me in the ouchie just before I bought it... but now that I experienced a titanium watch, I'm not sure if I want this watch anymore. As stated in 1, I'll have to try the Pelagos on for me to buy in the future!

I'm but an awkward schoolboy in this world, still attempting to work up the courage to ask someone to the dance. I know nothing of lust or passion. I have too much to learn about my own desires, and am too inexperienced to even comprehend the scale of a slow burning desire. I've had ups and downs, but nothing approaching broken dreams. I'm sure in a few more years, I'll have tales of triumph, sorrow, lust, and betrayal. But for now, even a basic Submariner hangs above me, unattainable, like a poster of Pamela Anderson decorating the wall of a 90s teen. Time will tell where this story will lead.

You never see used Brunswicks because they are simply wonderful objects. There is some strange noise out there about the Brunswick looking like a Panerai (presumably because of the cushion case), but I assure you, they are NOTHING like a Panerai!

There are no straight lines on the Brunswick case. It's all hand polished. It's a glorious looking thing and the white enamel dial (although I see you have your sights on the Salmon dial which is also lovely) is simply elegance itself. Understated, of course.

Big fan.

The analogy to attending a dance is apt. You feel awkward at first, then you start to think you've got a few moves. You go out there, and some trained flamenco artiste stomps his way around the floor with a hot femme fatale while you salivate stepping back and forth out-of-time in a half box step ... with yourself. Eventually, you dance with a few women. Some are better looking than others. Some are better dancers than others. Some are to die for, others are fun but kind of cheap. Some have got good movements and display case backs, but honestly some don't even have aligned bezels. You've just got to figure out whether you're at a barn dance or in Vienna waltzing. Either way, watch your wallet.
