What Lawn Beast do you own to accompany your watch to tackle your lawn/garden mowing?

Many of us are beset with the daunting (but often satisfying) chore of mowing our lawns. Though my choice of watch to accompany the inevitable task changes (this time it’s my Casio W-735H), my lawn beast remains the same.

Image

For years I was a Toro die-hard and would trumpet to all who would regale me the fineries of its powerful Briggs and Stratton engine and variable drive ‘Personal Pace System’ transmission. But in 2013 I took my Toro in for a service, and while there was awed by what I now consider the Cadillac of mowers — my now ten-year old Honda HRR 160cc OHC mower with Smart Drive transmission and a beloved manual choke. So, I traded in my Toro on the spot and took home my new red and silver Quadra Cut.

Image

This rear-wheel drive monster powers through all lengths of grass I have thrown at it with muffled-finesse, while only lightly-sipping its fuel so I can just let it idle between bag changes and never have to turn it off until I’m done.

Image

I know this site is not called ‘Mowercrunch’, but I really want to know what kind of lawn mower you guys own and why you love owning it.

Show us your lawn beast and choice of watch while tooling around in your lawn or garden?

Nice! I own the exact same model! Love its tide graph and moon phase. I just wish the negative display was easier to read for my aging eyes.

·

I have one of these.

As for why I love it, I’d say it’s more of a hate-hate relationship. It doesn’t cut very well, and I resent having to own grass in the first place. I grew up cutting grass and firmly believe it’s care and maintenance is something unfit for adults.

Sorry, I’ll let you get back to enjoying exercise and fresh air and all that.

·

So I have a Husquavarna (sp ?) but it does have a Honda motor. Being that I never follow rules, I have what must be the least well maintained mower in North America. Despite that though, it never fails to start on the first pull. Now keep in mind I live in New England so it sits for at least 6 months a year without being used, exposed to freezing cold weather and opportunistic mice that love to live in air filters.

This is much like my watches, none of which, including a 60 year old Omega Seamaster, have ever been serviced and they all still tick away happily. I really am much too irresponsible to own nice things.😉

Used to cut my parents and grandparents lawn with one of these. I miss the sound the blades made as they turned

It's a great little watch. I agree the negative display isn't super clear with age. My son saved up his money as a child and purchased the watch as a birthday gift for me. This is my most valued watch. I wear at some point every day. Mostly to work out or do lawn work. This watch hits the ocean, pool, camping, backpacking etc.

Just have this Bolens with a Briggs and Stratton engine.

My watch of choice is also a classic, albeit an updated version, my G Shock GWM5610.

I have so many questions:

1. How fast does it go?

2. What is the range?

3. Do you have to get it serviced each year like a car?

4. Have you ever done a George Jones and driven to a bar on it? If not, why not?

For context, my lawn is so small that my daughter’s rabbits pretty much take care of it. So to me one of those is living the dream.

2 lawn beasts together ,though to be honest it usually wearing this

Now you can probably tell from the 1st pic there's no briggs n stratton or Honda powered beast under the hood, no its powered by the magic of electricity which is quite unusual, and I'll tell you why. Over here in the UK most gardens are small, tiny in fact due to being a small landmass and land is priced in the 000s per Square inch. And the equation goes the smaller the lawn the bigger n more powerful the lawn mower. Generally bought by blokes who are well under the rule of strict wives and aren't allowed large powerful cars so they're only avenue for masculine expression is through they're lawn mower. Next door has a lawn 3 strides across and has got an 30 inch cut lawn mower with a 2.5 horsepower Honda in it,idiot 2 doors down has got one even bigger(mind you needs it as he cuts his 3 times a day). There's a national sport over here where blokes listen out for the neighbours shed door to slam, and then the race is on to get there's out and get mowing (I just go out n slam my door just out of devilment) oh the noise, the inevitable swearing due to a reluctant beast not starting and the shame it brings, sometimes small fires, pulled backs and general chaos. Yep it's not just a necessity in the UK it's an all consuming passion taken to heights we in the watch community can only dream of. Anyway next time out with my beast I'll take a proper picture and do a SOTC on grass crunch (and no I haven't been smoking it, but over here you judge the character of a man by the size of of his lawnmower).

That’s funny! Though that reel mower does make a cleaner cut than a rotary.

My brother owns a Toro he bought 30 years ago and has only topped off the oil and that thing fires up every-time. I can attest to the reliability of the Honda engine the same.

I plan on being in a studio apartment in the near future on the water . No lawns huzzah 🎉. I am over cutting grass and doing edges also .

You and me both. Near the water is great, it’s nice to look at and you don’t have to water it.

That’s beautiful! Do you have any attachments like a de-thatcher or plow?

The UK had a de- Thatcher. I'm sure they'd let you borrow it.

·

I used to be a die hard gas mower guy until I bought this 40v electric mower:

Image

I do not regret this purchase, it is awesome! It runs lightly for easy stuff but kicks in and powers through tougher grass no problem! Variable-drive self-propelled too!

Anyway, here are my gardening/chore watches:

Modded 5KX or my Ti Helm Vanuatu on a NATO (to save my watch from falling into the sea of cut grass in case a spring bar breaks and so I can rinse them off with myself after I'm done).

When I was a kid and until I started collecting, I took my watch off before mowing the lawn. Now I specifically pick the watch I want to wear while doing chores. 😜

That is duly the way of a watch enthusiast.

Not a bad deal.

Do those use the One Power batteries by TTI?

It's the Ryobi 18V One+ series, same batteries as their drills and other cordless power tools, primarily through the Home Despot.

This is my overnight watch. The vibration alarm is perfect for waking up without waking my wife, which could lead to my premature demise...

Love to see this bad boy light up when I mow

·

This is my weed Wacker/compost stirring watch. Btw composting is super fun.

·

I got this 56” bad boy this summer to mow my 0.22 acre lawn.

Image

I usually wear one of these when I’m doing yardwork. The stopwatch function tells me that I can do the whole thing in under 20 minutes.

Image

Occasionally I will go for an automatic.

Damn! Aptly named. Looks like it can chew you up and spit you out. 20 minutes is only enough time to enjoy one Rolling Rock.
