"Birth Gift"... Hamilton Khaki Field King?

My wife and I are expecting our 3rd child in October. For our other two children's births I have bought my wife a nice "birth gift" (an eternity ring and a Tag Heuer).

I have bought a gift this time too but... my wife has suggested I should get a nice watch to mark the occasion this time! (I was in shock because it was only last week she told me I had too many watches!!... but I'm going to strike while the iron is hot!

I said she should help me choose the watch and she thinks the Hamilton Khaki Field King is perfect... and I tend to agree.

It looks nice, would be versatile in the office and casual/social. I m always happy to add a field watch to my collection. The specs are great too with the H40 giving 80 hour power reserve.

But... at the same time I had the Glycine Combat Sub and Echo/Neutra Averau 39 both on my wishlist.

All around the same price point too of £500ish (£600USD)

So I put it to the WC community for your thoughts...

Anyone have experience with the Hammy, or the Glycine or Echo/Neutra?

Noting the sentiment of this watch, what would be the most appropriate?

Any other suggestions and why?

If that's your budget, the truth is that Hamilton Khaki Field is a very good watch go for it

I’ve got that Echo/Neutra and love it. However if your wife likes the Hammy that seems like a no brainer though.

Well if I knew she was going to suggest I get a watch, I wouldn't have spent so much on her gift and upped my watch budget 😅

·

Had an auto khaki king.... until my Mrs nicked it.

It survived a motorcycle crash (written at length about that on WatchCrunch elsewhere) & remains her favourite watch - despite opposition from Seiko and Cartier.

Ive not a chance of getting it back 🤣

Excellent choice 👍

I like the look of the Echo/Neutra collections. Adding 20% VAT to their website price for the UK is the thing that puts me off, and they don't seem an easy microbrand to come by other than directly from them.

I get your point on her choice, that will have more meaning but I'm also aware she doesn't know what else could be out there... its only because she saw the Hamilton in the high street. But I do like the look of it I must say.

Both would age well IMO. Personal preference would be to avoid a diver for an occasion watch.

The Glycine has just been on my list for ages just never got round to buying it... all the research on who has has the best sale price is so time consuming. Their prices are always all over the place and you end up thinking "I know i could get it cheaper at some point". But I think you're right, the other 2 choices feel more appropriate for the occasion.

Echo/Neutra have a few AD’s unfortunately all in the EU, but I really like their line up. Good luck and congratulations on number 3. I’ve got 2 kids and think we’re set. Not sure about being outnumbered 😬.

We said that after number 2 too... 😐

Hate the Hamilton the khaki is just such a bland watch but if your wife likes it and it's on your list take the new watch as a win 😁

·

I have the Hamilton Khaki King quartz model, so it's lighter than the auto and missing that extra oomph an automatic might bring. That being said, I was very disappointed with this watch, very bland and boring immediately upon opening the box and didn't spark me up like both cheaper, similar priced, and more expensive watches did for me.

It's very legible, but that's about all it has going for it IMO. Don't know if the auto version has a screw down crown but my quartz version doesn't which seems insane for the money you spend.

I tried different straps with it but in the end I will try and sell it just to make room.

If you can't resist it, personally I would say steer away from the black dial model at least.

If I had the money, I'd go for the echo/neutra as it has more presence without being over the top. Good luck!

·

The Khaki is cool but in terms of versatility I would choose the Murph 38mm. Other suggestion would be Traska or Lorier

·

What a great idea. I'm going to tell my kids this year, on their birthday, I'm buying a watch for myself!

Kidding aside, I think it's a great idea that I wish I had thought of. The Hamilton would be a great choice but I'd go with the 38 mm Murph. A little more expensive though.

·

The Echo neutra (once you get rid of that awful NATO strap) is much rare, has more personality and is a good conversation starter with watch geeks.

·

Having had both the Hamilton khaki field and Glycine Comabat; I still have two khaki and no Glycine. That represents my opinion.

Get the Hamilton all the way. Depending upon your collection, maybe look at the golden, beige, metallic dial? Black is always good, but for something different that gold metallic could be good too.

Obviously my vote is for the king

·

Khaki King by a long shot!

·

Khaki king and the buy a nato from Hamilton made for that watch so you have 2 watches sort of

The Echo Neutra has a nifty moon phase....I'd definitely go with that!

·

Funny...I've got the glycine and the Hamilton and I'd still pick door #3

·

If the missus say the Khaki Field King is perfect, it’s PERFECT!

·

A Laco with custom engravings on the case side and rotor 😜

·

More options if you decide to include quartz (Longines previous conquest model, Frédérique constant, or Raymond Weil). From automatic, Certina makes great watches too. Plus good many micro brands (Nodus, Venezianico or Baltic).

·

She thinks the Hamilton is perfect. Go for it. Never second guess the wife. In my experience it is a bad idea

Beware custom engravings. I have that on the rotor of my Laco Aachen olive. Never really gelled with the watch and the engraving stops me being able to sell it.

·

Check out Traska.

·

Hamilton no brainer .. this watch is a strap monster as well .you can never get bored

·

ABHTHNARC

Anything but Hamilton, they have no anti-reflective coating.

The Khaki King should come with a warning that it is utterly unreadable. One would hope that would change at night with lume glowing like a torch and long lasting. Nope, loses there as well.

·

Love my #hamilton Khaki king

·

I got the Hamilton. She has not given it to me yet... baby is due 25th Oct, so I have to wait a little longer.
