What’s the one watch you love but would never buy?

The Cartier Tank Must in black is a watch that is rent free in my head at the moment. There’s just something so timeless and clean about the design that I can’t get enough of.

However, even the dimensions of the large one make me fear that my ‘generous wrists’ (as an Omega boutique salesman once said) would just make this gorgeous piece look silly on me.

That isn’t the main thing holding me back though, I have absolutely no need for a dress watch as I’m never in an environment where I would need to wear one. My office job is casual dress and the last time I put a suit on was for a friends wedding nearly 2 years ago, it would be such a shame to see this incredible watch gathering dust because of my lifestyle.

Does anyone else have the same problem as me with a watch? Heart says yes but the logic and reason in my head say absolutely not don’t be stupid? 😂

Most watches from Jaquet Droz, due to the large case size.

Never heard of those before but wow would you just look at them 😍

Though I do have 1 moonswatch, I will never buy another. I do love them very much but will not buy another

·

Any JLC Reverso.

I once obsessed with rectangular watches (tank, santos, reverso, etc.) but thought it would look silly on me. However, I casually visited JLC boutique since it was right next to my hotel, and asked if I could place on Reverso just to see how it fits me.

And now it's one of my dream watches 🥲

Yeah, paying for all that testing would be a loss on someone who never swims and hates the beach haha. I do think they look lovely . . . and that's saying something for someone who generally hates all watches with a dive bezel. But I think about the reed green one from time to time.

I wish this Cartier was mechanical. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

So pretty though...

I would love a Cartier tank, but this affordable Seiko tank has saved me from financial ruin and divorce🥴

The Cartier would be great contrast with a casual style btw. Jeans, T-Shirt and Sneakers are mich more interesting with such a stunner imho 😉

·

I hear ya! First off, that watch is STUNNING! Back in my younger days, as I was often in a suit or tuxedo, I would have killed for that thing.

Today, in retirement on my horse ranch, not so much. 😜

I suppose if one is a "collector" it would make sense regardless. But I'm a "wearer." So, as much as I can drool over that thing, no way I'll be buying one.

This would make a dial look like that Cartier

I love MB&F’s “horological machines”, but would not buy them :) Machine no.4 as an example below:

Mine would probably be a Rolex Explorer 36. Absolutely love the design but it’s such an icon that it would be difficult to wear it and not catch people’s attention.

I love mine and as happy wearing it with a hoodie as I am with a shirt. In fact I hardly ever wear shirts!

It is small, but you get used to it quickly

1) I think it can look good with casual clothes as a contrast.

2) It would look perfectly at home under any dress cuff - no jacket required.

3) If you don't feel your clothes match the watch, you can always change your clothes! If you are like me, clothes would be small fraction of the cost of the watch.

·

Let me make it easier for you to buy it - I have always loved Cartier Tank because there's something about it which transcends time and changing trends - its a bonafide classic - Then I saw The Great Ali wearing his tiny tank on his massive wrist and still looking like a million bucks - that too in a t-shirt - I used to wear only slightly large watches so I wasnt sure if tiny and delicate Cartier Tanks would look good on me - Finally i took the leap of faith last year and man, what a feeling - Once you get past this mental block of small watch on big wrist thing or even formal vs non formal you realize that watch can look good onj anything as long as you wear it with love - Now i have two tanks and both are my favorites

Hell yeah, I know that feeling. Only for me it is the other way round. My wrist is too small for the Oris Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115. I love the brand, love the watch. I just can't pull off the size. At all. Even if I would eat only butter and butter related food items for a year. Or do something even more irrational and lift weights for a year...

·

I wear a suit about once (maybe twice) a year and I have this watch. It works great with casual outfits too, especially if you swap the strap. One of my favorite in the collection. I’d encourage you to keep considering it 😉

Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch

Love space, keen amateur astronomer, love the story, but handwound and chronograph, so no. Shame 😔
