Decision to Buy Now or Save & Wait

What are your thoughts on saving for a new Tudor BB54 for a couple of years. Or in the nearer future buying a Seiko SPB147/ SBDC105 (62 MAS). I have other watches I wear & enjoy.

I’m interested in hearing your experience on the benefits of saving for your first choice versus buying what you also really like in the short term.

Thanks.

I am becoming more a "save and wait" guy.

Especially if you already have watches that give you joy, why settle?

That being said - pending you don't completely destroy it during ownership, you could buy the 147 and then sell it when it's time to buy the BB54 at not too much of a loss, especially if you buy used.

Save.

Ultimately buy the one you want most. If you really want the Tudor than save up so that you can eventually buy it. If you want the seiko more, than save up for the seiko. No matter what you do, if you have your mind set on that one really nice watch, even if it’ll take longer to get, don’t delay it further by indulging in smaller less significant purchases. Trust me, it’s worth the wait 👍🏻

·

Save.

Buying lesser (but still nice) watches will always delay the acquisition of the watches you really want.

·

Save for sure. Quality wise the BB54 is well worth the wait compared to the Seiko.

·

I would save.

·

I’d say wait and save because I’ve had a terrible experience with my 6R35

Don’t play the substitution / compromise game. You’ll likely regret it. Also keep in mind that in a few years you may lose interest in the Tudor. Get a budget and look around for a couple weeks. Do consider preowned. Tudor prices nose dive as quick as Seikos.

·

I think it depends on the state of your collection. If it’s small and your missing a diver, go for the Seiko and work toward the Tudor. Otherwise, wait it out and save for the Tudor.

·

Hard. I’m a Seiko Fan but I have also a BlackBay. Seiko is like your breeches or your socks even with holes you can’t stop use it and always you prefer it even you have the choice of a Calvin Klein underwear. Simple you are always be happy with your Seiko. But… the smile you can get the first time you see a Tudor under your cufflink shirt pay for years of Seiko’s

·

I always think you should go for the watch you want. If you like the BB54, get that one. Even if it takes a bit longer to save for, you’ll be glad you went for it as opposed to getting an alternative

·

After saving for a watch you really want, and perhaps say to your self: I will buy this when I achieve x goal or similar - it makes the watch so much more special! Im also saving up to buy myself a BB54, so we are in the same boat😎

Save my friend

It’s my view you can buy the 62mas now, wear it for a few years, then sell it and buy the Tudor once you’ve got the savings. Win-win. You can get the seiko below retail if you buy used. I actually got mine new on chrono24 from a dealer in Japan for ~$900. If you do that, you probably won’t lose much money when you sell it. If you buy for retail at $1200, you’ll lose some when you sell it

·

Always save and wait. Practising long term gratification will help you. Not just in watch collecting.

·

buy Seiko watches in person because of QC issues. In your picture the 12 and 4 indices look out of place. I'd wait for the better watch

·

Save baby save 👌🏻

·

I’ve owned both and I genuinely think the Seiko has much more character and would pull the trigger on a lightly used one of those

·

Save and wait. I had the SPB143 and BB58. Once I got the BB58, I never wore the SPB again.

·

Not a helpful opinion, but try them both on and see which one you like more on the wrist. Anecdotally, the Pelagos 39 was like a grail for me since it came out, but the ADs in my area never had any stock and I couldnt justify spending that much. Long story short, I ended up picking up the Seiko SPB383 MM200 GMT instead, and it's basically scratched the itch (and cost a ton less, plus a healthy discount from the dealer). So much so that when I did get a chance to try on the P39 in store, I wasn't actually as enamored by it as I thought I would be.

·

You know I thought I'd love hte BB54 but it looked too boxy on my wrist. BB58 looks much better on me. Trying on the BB54 really made me appreciate my 62MAS even more actually, it's a great watch.

·

Don't own luxary watches and never will. Knowing that I have a quality piece with tons of character yet didn't spend litteraly thousands of dollars on it actually increases my enjoyment of it. Feels like I found something special because the joy I get from wearing my Seiko or Orient watch exceeds what I paid for them greatly.

A few things to consider.

Taste can change and in a while you may find something you prefer to the Tudor.

If you buy any watch you can sell again.

In the flesh/on the wrist can be radically different to photos.

Stay true to yourself and not hype (trust me I’ve been there and it’s very easy to get influenced)

ENJOY the journey and don’t worry too much about mistakes. Life is too short!

Happy hunting

Save and wait, the Tudor will be way better than the seiko

·

If you want an accurate time keeper the Tudor is the one to go for. The Seiko is aesthetically pretty but as they are unregulated

don’t expect it to keep good time.

Pro-Tip: Never buy a watch with god-awful hands (that would be the Tudor)

If you MUST: Save up! No other option is viable. You WILL yearn for that abomination (the Tudor) until you have it. No other „option“ will suffice in the long run.
