Your Brand Here

Let's imagine that you are the head of a fully funded Kickstarter that can start producing a limited run of watches.  What do you name your brand and why?

Not all of the "good" brand names are taken.  Not everyone's name makes sense spelled backwards. A brand should evoke the ethos and atman of the watch (i.e. Alpina for mountains and height, Certina for certainty, Mortima because all watches die.)

I will give you two:

Bandersnatch: Lewis Carroll had a way with words.  It would be a dark dialed diver with lume for days and a ridiculously long lugs.

Time's Arrow:  From Arthur C. Clarke's insight into entropy working in only one direction. This would be sealed case casual watch that is doomed to fall apart (yes, I know that Swatch and Timex have already done this, but it is a cooler name).

Ichibunz in script and every case back will say “ If it itches scratch it!” 😁. I actually tried UNDOne watches yesterday and made my custom watch and it looked nice ! Ok Ichibunz is patent pending so don’t get any ideas !! I think my brand is perfect for any collector 😉

Insidius, a callback to a gamer username I've had in the past. We would have the standard range of watches, but the movements would all be black.

·

I'd go with something like Nimbus, or Cumulonimbus. Weather nerds live for that stuff, and you can get a graphic designer to draw up a logo that is close to the synoptic symbol for rain, thunderstorm, etc..

This is the synoptic symbol for a Thunderstorm, it's pretty much a ready made base for a logo.

Logo:

DC Multiverse — dyebeard: The dove of peace, my trademark....

Tagline:  "I cherish peace with all my heart. I don't care how many men, women, and children I need to kill to get it"

I really wanted to come up with something smart, exiting, exotic now when I have the chance to create my own brand. But the question took me off guard and my brain didn’t really catched up. My first was the Swedish name for Speed but that had limited the brand to outside English speaking countries only. FART would not fly.

My 2nd attempt might fly. JOKK. Double KK is exotic. I believe it’s only used in Sami, Finland and Hungary. Jokk means (water)stream in Sami. With different spelling Jock I understand it can mean sportsnerd and Scotsman as well.

So there we have it JOKK - Cheap watches made for sports

JOKK would sound good, until you attach a strap to it.

Forgot to mention. They only come with integrated bracelet.

Tricky with names that shall work international. In Sweden we have a mineralwater named Loka. Didn’t work that well in our neighbour country Finland. There Loka mean mud or clay.

lol! Didn't Chevy try to sell the Nova car in Mexico and sales were terrible because no one bothered to check what the name meant in Spanish? "No va" roughly translates to "it does not go" in Spanish - not a great name for a car! Maybe that's a made up story, but funny nonetheless!

Bill & Ted's Excellent Time Machines!

Here is the logo. 🤣

·

Blue Steel Rod. We would use blued hands.

·

I fear that I may be clichéd in this, what with every microbrand doing pretty much this, but I'd go with Spitfire as it "perfectly personifies our ethos". Cutting edge, iconic design, British quality. Coming to a kickstarter near you!

"Occluded"

Here is part of the chapter ring:

As daft as it seems, I would consider doing this for 34mm watch with fixed lugs, trench style, with a ETA 7001 movement, and a 34mm dress watch with similar movement, possible steel/black and gold/brown case/strap combo.

I am wanting to try and see about getting the 34mm dress option, but modern; a good everyday.

No idea for names though.

·

I’d name my watch brand either after the Egyptian god of time Huh or the Christian god of time God

·
OldSnafu

there are watches on Ali that you can get a custom logo put on.

Yes - as we know from these brands pushed by influencers to the general ignorant public where a $10 AliX watch sells for $200 with a custom logo but "without any increased cost of a middleman" 😂

·
Aurelian

Heh is more of an infinity kind of frog.  I prefer Ptah.  Ankh hands, what do you think?

Ankh hands would be interesting to see

·

Maybe I missed it in the thread, but no Tolkien shout outs? I submit:

Gondor, Arkenstone, mithrill, Elrond

A field watch from Dunedain called the Ranger would be neat!

·
ChronoGuy

So I thought I would check AliX...

When I entered "Agemo" - I received listings for hemorrhoid creams

"Xelor" resulted in custom T-shirts

and "Ketap" resulted in mechanical seals for pumps.

So, there you are - three brand names ripe for competition with ass creme, t-shirts and pumps.

Wilsdorf, and it would be an homage of a Smith’s.

Of course, I’ll wear a JOKK when I’m playing sports to protect my Wilsdorf.

Have you considered a vintage Smiths?

Have you considered a vintage Smiths?

Being somewhat ignorant of Smiths, other than that it was the first watch to reach the summit of Everest and an important watch for the British military, what were the range of diameters for various Smiths references?

I have only seen smaller diameter Smiths. Any references to point to that are 39mm or larger? (and not the current reissue Smiths made in China).

I would love to add a Smiths to the collection.

Vintage Smiths tend to be 30-36mm, even divers and the W10.

Some of the later divers were 40mm, but if it says Swiss Made walk away as these were just random movements, not decent Smiths ones from Cheltenham.

A jock is also a piece of safety equipment that protects the "crown jewels" in sports.

Maybe you could use this as your logo 😉

Shock Doctor 213 Basix Senior Supporter w/BioFlex Cup

Good idea. Then I don’t need to clutter the dial with ”shock resistent” either, or ”incabloc” as it were.

My guess is that it has something to with "Agemo" 😂

This is actually something I’ve thought about quite a bit - like if I were to start a brand, what name would I create and what makes a great name? I feel these days it should be something short (5-9 letters) and ideally memorable. I’ve always been drawn to the brand names like Baltic, Monta, Orion, Farer, etc. Not sure if they have any deep meanings behind these names, but I never felt offended with how they read on a dial. They remind me of names like Omega, Milus, Titus, etc.

So when I imagining names I wanted, I was searching for something that would fit within these parameters. In terms of inspiration, I’ve always like the idea of a window, skylight, atrium on the wrist - probably pulling from my arch background. I started thinking of famous openings to the sky and arrived at the Pantheon - which is where I derived the name Oculo, which is Italian for oculus. I was really striving for something with 5 letters, so this fit perfectly. Fun little mock-up below.

i would make a watch brand with a vintage aesthetic looks, all genre diver, flieger, trench, chrono, gada, etc. preferably with swiss automatic movement, diametre from 36mm-42mm. as it is associated with vintage aesthetic i would name the brand "rust"

·
Unholy

what does ichibunz mean btw? 😂

it’s a pun of the Japanese word “Ichiban“, which means no 1 or the best 😁
