Micro Tournament Round 1 Day 1: Baltic Vs. S.U.F. Helsinki

I know Baltic will win this one b/c it is known, people have probably tried one on, they have a chunk of the market in that attainable price range . . . but S.U.F. Helsinki is just more interesting to me and associated with one of the more interesting watchmakers out there.

Sadly, many of the match up brands will not make the same style of watches. I do my best to highlight the brand’s key watches. I’d hope many look into the whole brand vs a single photo.
Cmon guys they aren't even in the same league. SUF is stratospheric. I know they're going to lose this one unfortunately

I see what you did there. Finland is on the Baltic Sea. Baltic is a microbrand juggernaut, so I thought I would give it to the underdog, and who knew there was Finnish watchmaking? But then I saw their prices, and I didn't see anything notable enough to justify the price. And they make car watches, blergh. Some Baltic designs are quite nice, and reasonably priced. So fine, let the juggernaut win.
Again, I never base my likes or dislikes based on a brand name. In this instance I prefer the aesthetics of the Helsinki
Never heard of S.U.F. Helsinki before but this is the fun of such a game. I go for Baltic, though!

As a finnish guy you all ready know....
I’ve held both and the SUF is superior in terms of finishing and general sense of high quality, but I still voted for the Baltic because I like it more in terms of looks. Brains, eh?

S.U.F. is taking it in the shorts. Sad, as I love their stuff. But they have much less brand recognition than Baltic, so I'm not surprised.
But I'm biased here. S.U.F. got my money (As soon as I saw the dial if the 180 Teal I was hooked) and Baltic has hasn't gotten a penny from me.
I would not take the votes as any indication of anything more than preference. They are two different tiers of watches and if I have learned anything, folks love a good value under $1000, and as a result, less hands on with more expensive brands. That and Baltic has been in the running the last two, but fell just short.
The win here is all the folks talking about them and perhaps checking them out for the first time.
An easy win for Batic on the popularity stakes and can't fault them but I would take an SUF 180 over anything in Baltic's have to offer.

Baltic designs good looking watches and then puts in movements that are sub-par. I have known retailers to stop carrying them because of so many returns. We deserve better - SUF gets my vote

The dial finish on the 180 is truly amazing. The teal in direct sunlight is one of the very best I've ever seen.
And I have a Grand Seiko Lake Suwa (another amazing dial.)

Yup.
Plus even in the NCAA tourney, better manned, better trained, better coached teams still falter for any number of reasons.
And to say $ has ZERO effect or not taking $ into consideration at all means would only lead to $10K theoretical arguments.
So, I guessed the spread on this one before I even clicked my vote. Like many others I was somewhat familiar with Baltic but had never heard of SUF. Although I like the SUF offering, and I think they maybe had a shot at moving further in this tournament if they had been paired up against just about any other brand. At the end of the day, Baltic is a damned nice brand with many great offerings and at a price point that is quite affordable, they got my vote.
