Watch buying advise - USD20k to spend (just 1 piece)

Reaching out to the watch folks on WatchCrunch for some advise. I have USD20k (+/- a little here to factor in rounding) to spend on a watch, and would love opinions.

Current collection includes:

  • Rolex Explorer 1 (39mm) - daily wear

  • Tudor GMT (aka Diet Pepsi on an Uncle Seiko jubilee)

  • G-Shock Square (resin & full metal)

  • Hamilton Khaki King II (day date)

The watches being considered include:

  1. Rolex GMT Master 2 (Bruce Wayne / Pepsi / Rootbeer)

  2. Vacheron Overseas (white dial)

  3. Tudor FXD

  4. Zenith Defy Extreme (black)

  5. JLC reverso tribute dual face calendar

  6. Keep the money & invest it (not in watches...)

No rules - need not spend all the money, only really looking to buy one watch (to mark a special occasion) rather than maxing out the full budget, suggestions outside of the 5 above welcome.

The VC Overseas would be a cherry on top of that collection, but I would go with the JLC, dependent upon your lifestyle dictating that it be worn in a regular rotation.

·

That is a serious budget (nearly twice the amount of your current collection), what do you like the most? There are so many options at your disposal, but when you are talking the price of a car, buy the one that you really want.

·

I would say reverso since it seems you are missing a dress watch in your collection but like @cornfedksboy said only if you would wear it somewhat regularly that would also leave a chunk of change to use however you please (vacation, invest, etc). Second choice for me would be the overseas

·

1 skip the Rolex, you’ve got a Tudor

2. I prefer the blue dial, but either is a winner

3. Good choice, and everybody needs a diver.

4. “Defy” was defiant enough, no need to add extreme in there. It’s trying too hard, hard pass.

5. Yes. Absolutely yes.

6. Let’s not be ridiculous here.

In conclusion, I’d get the VC or JLC.

Or this one that is within your price point, and truly lustworthy.

Breguet has been on my mind as of late. Lots of mentions of them and they continue to remain slept on in the community.

·

Wow congratulations!! Like mentioned here JLC or VC

·

I have a strange taste for black and gold, so I would mainly reccomend this Omega...

Or a dramatically cheaper Tissot, for just 1100 euro...

Or a lovely beater from Invicta (that I have) for amazing 62 euro!!

I truly hope you won’t let a bunch of knuckle-heads on a forum decide how to spend your twenty grand! Thanks for the privilege though!

Gold Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch.

Can't hurt to check out Bulgari if you haven't as of yet. Photos don't do them justice, the wrist feel is butter, some of the movements are groundbreaking and you'll rarely encounter another one. This is the Roma though the Octo Finissimo is imo equally sublime.

·

Here is my vote.

I’d also throw Grand Seiko in the mix.

·

From that list all in for the JLC

At that price you can also look at independents

  • Moser

  • Armin Strom

  • Habring

  • Dornbluth

Good luck

I don't know if I qualify as a knucklehead, but I doubt it. If you have 20k to spend on a watch, why not give the money away and save a few people's lives? That would be a human investment.

·

I would go for a Vacheron or JLC. But not the Reverso for JLC though. The rest just doesn't speak much, although I agree, you don't need to go to the 'Extreme' for the Defy. 🤤

·

Vacheron Constantine Overseas. The perfect way to complete the collection.

·

Personally I'd go for a D.Dornbluth & Sohn and invest the rest elsewhere

I'd be careful with that sort of thinking. You know nothing about his generosity (or lack thereof). The same logic could easily be applied to you from someone else's perspective. I'm sure if we added up the money spent on an "affordable" 24 watch collection, it would be a relatively nice chunk of money that could have gone to "help" someone less fortunate. The same might be said of all of us on this website who are fortunate enough to spend any amount of discretionary money on a collection of wristwatches (aka, luxury items).

Thank you so much for your warning about '[my] sort of thinking.' It was rash of me to imagine that I could think at all.

I may not be very good at arithmetic, either, but 24 'affordable' watches (admittedly a relative term) do not tend to involve the spending of 20k.

We are talking, here, about watches. We are also talking about people in poverty - in a so-called first world country. However much the gentleman gives to charity (if he does), 20k would be helpful to those people.

However you slice it, poverty, war and earthquakes come before glitter on the wrist. But don't worry, this is just 'my sort of thinking.'

I agree. That being said, I would expect you to sell at least 22 or 23 of your watches and contribute those funds to help said poverty, etc. That's a rather excessive amount of wrist glitter to own while there are people struggling to eat.

You're free to judge someone wanting to spend 20K on a watch if you want. Personally, even if I could spend that much on a watch myself, I don't think I would. Just know that someone in a less fortunate position than you could judge you by the same logic knowing you have over 20 watches (affordable or otherwise) when they can barely scrape enough money to pay rent. Just because the amount of money is different doesn't mean the logic is any less hypocritical.

·

Hope some of these comments haven't put you off buying a new watch ,you obviously work hard so enjoy

·
  1. JLC reverso tribute dual face calendar

  2. Rolex GMT Master II

What about the assistant watch maker at Vascheron Constantin that is just trying to make ends meet? He needs money too!

Who are you to shame others for spending money on watches when this is a watch forum?

OP can do as he sees fit. You're not his father.

·

Love the root beer idea, that’s my vote.

Could also get a two tone sub (steel/yellow gold and black dial), black or white face SkyDweller, and any DJ would be a solid addition.

For dress watch, I like the JLC master calendar Moonphase. Reverso great too.

nice choice , clicks a lot of boxes,

·

From your list my pick would be the Pepsi, which kind of makes your Tudor GMT redundant so I would sell that. Then I would add a Tank Must over a Reverso if the budget stretched that far.

Image
·

Lots of modern classics over at Grand Seiko with a Spring Drive movement. And you don't need to spend all your budget!

·

Moser

Parmigiani

Cartier

Look at those too.

If you can get the VC you want, that’s the knockout.

THIS

·

You need a dive watch in that collection. Omega Planet Ocean. In Gold. On Gold Bracelet.

·

Tudor Pelagos. Leaving you approximately 16k to still potentially spend!

Sorry I know next to nothing about anything more expensive than north of £5k. So I would probably get 4 watches from the £20k limit. I would have to get an Omega and Grand Seiko but I'm in uncharted waters!!
