Could you wear one brand for life?

I was thinking about the SOTC. I started thinking maybe I should consider collecting one brand. Could I wear one brand? What brand would it be? How would it work?

Image

So I’ll propose you this.

If you could you pick one brand, any brand to give you any of their watches new or vintage for free for life would you? The only condition is that you could never wear any other brand. You would have to wear every watch you ask for. You couldn’t trade, sell or give them away. Could you do it?

If you could what brand would on your wrist for life and why? If you couldn’t, why not?

There is probably enough variety in Seiko that if I had to I could probably get enough enjoyment there, just between Presage and Prospex there’s a lot of differences. Than when you add the 5 line, Credor and Grand Seiko (can I do that), you could have a well rounded varied collection with them.

·

I think I could happily live with a couple of Glashütte Original Senators, a SeaQ, several Pano variations, the turquoise and yellow Seventies and a Sixties thrown in for good measure. Something for every occasion and models I don’t think I would tire of wearing or looking at.

I already actually considered this strategy, but something to do with not having watches given to me for free led to somewhat more affordable additions to the original GO :-)

·

I'd be fine with Timex or Casio. I'll try to think of what omission I would find in this Faustian bargain as I'm currently drawing blank.

·

I could only wear one brand. Most brands nowadays have a large catalogue covering all styles of watches from sport to dressy so that would be fairly easy, as long as I resonate with their design language.

I would be perfectly happy with an Omega SMP, a speedy and a vintage Constellation. Or a Seiko MM200, a panda speedtimer and a 60s-70s KS or GS.

·

I know it's a boring choice but it's Rolex,I just love my Deep sea , it's big it's chunky and heavy

·

This thought experiment cropped up on another thread a while back and I opted for Longines. Long history, great spread of sport and dress models, super reliable, what's not to like?

·

I think Seiko or Citizen. They both have low, mid and high tier watches and both have Automatics, Quartz and solar. They both have Dress, Field, Divers, Chronos, Pilot's watches. Both have heritage watches and make their own movements.

·

I would wear Vacheron Constantin's for the rest of my life. They are more on the classy side, but have a variety of models and differences within each model. Also, craftsmanship and quality aside... rich history i.e. longest consecutive running brand in the world (oldest brand) something about that would be cool to wear and talk about when amongst family and friends.

·

Ugh…impossible for me simply bc I’d be bored eventually and subsequently lose all enthusiasm/interest in the hobby 🤙

·

Say Ko

·

Vertex

·

I mean haha Patek wouldn’t be bad! Aquanauts and Nautilus for fun - Calatrava etc for classic looks. Complicated ones to show off to watch buddies! What is not to like?

·

G-Shock for life ❤️

·

I think I would go with Casio.

Affordable, ample variety, from original versatile Casio, trough G-Shock and Protek to Edifice.

Yeah, Casio for me.

·

Yup Casio easy. They have thousands of models.

Would be a shame though. Because they are durable and full of features but mostly very ugly.

There's no Casio like this.

Yeah, Casio for me.

Casio now has Oceanus, and maybe an even more premium line too? I can't keep up with all of this.

Then, I'd pick Seiko. From the generic "Seiko" basic quartz watches, "5 Sports" desk divers, "Prospex" professional divers, "Presage" dress watches, "Astron" next-level GPS-solar sports watches, and "King Seiko" entry level luxury, you'd cover $50 to $5000 price range. Probably, the most expansive collection under one brand in the world.

Absolutely. Also, there are watches now branded just "Seiko" (not GS) that have Spring Drive and a high level of finishing.

" . . . the most expansive collection under one brand in the world." Can someone name another contender?

Easily! I sometimes already wish my whole collection was Bulova.

Lots of people act like Bulova is somehow off their game these days, but I think it's negative ad campaigning through the YouTube community. I am obsessed with Bulova. They make gorgeous watches that are more accurate than 99% of watches ever made in history. They literally invented tri-fork tuning and high frequency crystals. How is this not impressive??

They make dive watches, field watches, chronographs, quartz, automatics, music-themed, digital, you name it. They're one of the only manufacturers I can think of that feature curved sapphire.

If you're a cheapskate, you can get used ones (or one of their sub-brands like Caravelle) for less than fifty bucks. Big spender, and want people to know it? Some of their finer pieces cost upwards of $20,000. They make hardened beaters and diamond-crusted jewelry alike.

Everyone on this earth is welcome to have their own opinions, of course, but I feel like when people hate on Bulova, they're being purposely obtuse.

I chose Seiko, but thank you, I really enjoy what you wrote here. I could live with Bulova too. Mr. Bulova was a great watchmaker and a quintessential American success story. And you may not have been there, but the Accutron and its tuning fork were an absolute sensation when they were introduced in the 1960s. You can't imagine how excited people were. This was when everybody wore and needed a watch, even little kids like myself.

Out of 31 watches, I don't have any above $180, but I do have the Bulova 96A164, Frank Lloyd Wright Collection, and its dial and metalwork make it a stunner, especially for the $135 I paid. And one thousand extra points for mentioning Caravelle - the first time I have seen their name on WatchCrunch. I have the 43B152 which has the most legible and readable dial in watchmaking history, all for $55. Looks rather blah in photos. You should see the real thing.

I wouldn't mind having a Precisionist which you have rightly praised for its accuracy. I also wouldn't mind picking up a Bulova Hack Quartz if I could find one.

I really have no idea why Bulova is overlooked or not well thought of, and as I said, I even own a couple. And everything you say here is spot on. I can't blame lack of promotion, because the big hitters like Seiko, Casio and Citizen are notorious for not promoting or advertising their watches, which is why MVMT and DW were able to eat their lunch.

I wrote in a previous reply to someone that Seiko was the ultimate for innovation and variety, and could anyone name another contender. I should have read your reply first because you have just named one, and it is Bulova. Again, thanks.

If you count Edifice and Oceanus they have a few that aren't too shabby. Also with Seiko and Casio, you could wear a different watch of theirs every day of the lives I'm guessing most of us have left and never repeat.

Yeah. Though I wish they made the designs a bit more calm.

If we include Grand Seiko as a part of Seiko, it’s easily Seiko. If we don’t include Grand Seiko as a part of Seiko, still Seiko.

You probably already know this, but there are several watches with just SEIKO on the dial that have Spring Drive and a high level of finishing.

My realtor friend Shel is not a watch guy but does pretty well in his profession, I am going to post an answer on his behalf. His one and only brand would be Seiko but they need to be from the absolute bottom of the catalogue. A well known discount business was going to be redeveloped into condos, shopping, the usual ambitious renewal older communities experience. My frugal friend bought up the entire stock of cheap Seiko watches that are fitted with inexpensive Chinese movements.

Smart guy. And he now is a Watch Guy.

No problem for me, I could happily go Nomos only. Out of my 8/9 pc collection, I’ve been maintaining a small sub collection of three Nomos already. Only thing I’m missing is something a bit classier that could serve better as a dress watch and I could call it a day.

Image

I say a dressier strap on the blue one (Tangente?) and you could pull it off.

Definitely a smart guy but spends too many hours at a favourite neighbourhood bar, not even to drink just for companionship. Man needs a watch that costs more than $40.00 but not every guy can be converted into an enthusiast

·

There are two brands I'd have to consider, Nomos and Oris. I currently have one of each but am currently saving up for another Nomos and at least one more Oris is on my wish list. I don't think it would be a problem for me.

Which one. You picked 2. 😂

It’s actually an Ahoi with a brighter color than it looks in the pic. Could certainly do in a pinch of a leather strap, but a bit bolder than I’d opt for normally.

·

Grand Seiko or Seiko. They cover everything Sports and Dress.

Absolutely, it would be Omega.
