First Proper Post and A Question for the Community

Hi all!

Figured it was time to make a proper post on here after scrolling for quite a while.

My name is Zoli.

A short intro - I’m 23, I was gifted my first watch when I was 16 (quartz Seiko chronograph). I then proceeded to buy a few… mediocre quartz watches from fashion brands (y’know, the ones that sell you on “cutting out the middle man”). I wore them occasionally but ultimately there wasn’t much interest.

I found Teddy Baldassare’s videos a few years ago and got immediately sucked in. I found the mechanical functionality and sweeping hands irresistible. I bought my first mechanical watch a few months later.

My current collection consists of a quartz Seiko chronograph, a Casio world time, Casio calculator watch, Hamilton Khaki Feild auto (38mm), an SRPK17 (pictured), and a Tissot PRX powermatic 80 35mm (on the way).

As I continue my collection, I’m trying to attach my watch purchases to certain memories or milestones in my life. For example, I bought the SRPK17 before I proposed to my Fiancé (who is amazing and supports my watch obsession) and wore it during the proposal. BUT I just bought a PRX that I found a good deal on for absolutely no reason other than wanting to own it. I plan on owning it for about a year and then selling it to help the BB58 purchase I’m looking to make next year.

My question for you all is: how do you prefer to collect watches? Do you only buy watches to attach them to memories? Do you buy to try them out and then sell the ones that don’t feel like keepers? Or do you just buy what you like and it’s that simple?

Looking forward to interacting more with the community!

Welcome

I buy things I like (and I admittedly think of what fits I can rock with them)

I definitely do the same. If I can’t wear it often with a variety of outfits, I won’t buy it

·

So far I’ve just been impulsively buying what I hope I’ll like. Probably not the best strategy. For some reason I don’t form meaningful memories with watches easily. No more than with whatever shirt I was wearing for a given event. I usually forget about my watch during important events.

·

I started my collection last winter. All of them were what you might call impulse purchases from AliExpress. Over that time though I have noticed that my collection has started to veer in a certain stylistic direction (I currently favour neo vintage chronographs), and I am currently saving for my first Non AliExpress watch, which will be from #roue

Sounds like you’re hooked. Luckily, you’ve got good taste too! Sounds like a great watch collection.

·

haha. Teddy's vids and story about his grandfather helped get me back into watches too!

·

There have never been any complicated issues connected to my watch collecting, something I might have inherited from my dad who was a fanatical individual about mechanical objects. I have dabbled with cars, cameras audio equipment but watches have been a lifelong affectation that is for joy. I buy whenever a watch is appealing if I can afford it.

Welcome!

I buy for mostly practicality and comfort. But then I do enjoy if it looks nice too. And yes I do sell if it gets no use. I don't like a cluttered home. Plus it's more money to spend or save or invest etc.

Small collection.

Just buy what I like ,and what the wife lets me

If buying a new one, its nice to attach it to an occasion. But sometimes stuff pops up and you have to "add to basket " :)

I also like to attach watches to memories. I bought a seiko alpinist to match my toe when I got married and my Rolex OP shortly before my daughter was born. I also bought a prx for no reason other than I wanted one but sold it to make way for something else. I feel like doing all of the above is the way to do it. Some watches are at special times, some are more impulsive or randomly spread out, and some are good deals or temporary stepping stones to wear until you get the next one. At the hight of my collection I had 17 watches and now I have 6 but might even sell off 1 of those. As you grow I’d focus on quality over quality as you already seem to be doing building up to the Tudor.

Some people will disagree with me here but because I am not made of money I now only buy expensive watches at good deals. This allows me to trade up continually or get out whenever I wanted to.

·

I own the watch you have on your post and it is a 55 year anniversary edition of Seiko 5 sports it's unique now in Seiko as it bezel twist both ways so I bought it for my 55 and every other watch I have has been bought because I have a direct connection with in one way or another I haven't yet bought a watch I haven't connected with and then try and make memories with it but that's me us watch enthhusiacs are a varied bunch I hope that helps good luck on your journey friend.

·

I get you wanting to associate watches with occasions or milestones, I currently only own one mechanical watch (Seagull 1963) that was given to me by my partner on my birthday and I'm planning to get a watch to commemorate my graduation as a gift to myself.

I feel like it's completely fine to just buy a watch for wanting to buy a watch but it could also make you spend a whole lotta money if you don't have a lot of self control (like me lol).

As long as you're enjoying yourself and and you're handling your finances well, there's no harm in buying watches for the sake of buying watches.

I buy watches and wait for an occassion to occur. Yeah, I may have a problem. 🤣

·

Ultimately, I buy what I like, if it’s a bigger purchase that’s most likely a watch with a memory or milestone attached. 🤙

I appreciate the insight! And I agree a mix of all is good

I also really enjoy mechanical objects and discovering how they work. It was one of the main reasons I got into this hobby. Thanks for sharing!

Usually when the opportunity presents itself you have to pull the trigger. I like to make stories up to justify the purchases but inevitably it’s just the timing & having the extra cash 💵 on hand-the most important factor! I do have to say tho, before the purchase the itch has been there for a while & the actual purchase is just scratch that ultimately follows.

·

Well for me I buy watches only when I really like the watch (basically just can’t let it slide) and when it doesn’t hurt me financially.

PS: nice collections there you have 😁

·

Buy a watch box if you didn't have yet.

Four or Six slots will be fine.

·

Welcome to crunchy town. A nice collection you’ve got there.

For me, if I find one that I like, I would consider for quite sometime before making a decision. This is to rid out any impulse buy, which fails 99% of the time. Lol.

·

Love that Seiko 5, such a cool looking watch, enjoy ✌️ and congrats on your engagement. I haven't specifically sought to buy watches on special occasions but I just so happen to have been lucky enough to acquire one or two that coincided with special moments. It does make those pieces extra special. But apart from that, keep it simple I reckon, get what you like and enjoy ✌️

Welcome and congratulations on you engagement 🥂 love that retro Seiko SRPK17, looks great 👍🏻I tend to just buy what I like rather than purchasing for a specific occasion

Cool retro aesthetic.

Thanks! I’ll likely end up doing the same. The itch is just too strong sometimes
