It’s Friday the 13th👻 Do you like day and date complications?

If you like day and date complication, what kind kind of configuration do you like? Abbreviate? Full day? At the 3-oclock? At the 12-oclock position? Maybe you like them in a particular language. Let’s discuss!

I don’t much care for day/date complications, but I do appreciate the aesthetics of the full day at the 12 O,Clock.

·

I like a date complication, but not so much a day because they take up so much space on the dial (and I have far less trouble remembering the day). I also prefer a Japanese or German language wheel.
I quite like this setup:

I don’t in general, but when you put them at 12/6 I suddenly become a fan. I just don’t understand hanging the day/date out there at 3 o’clock.

·

I can live without the day, but I definitely find the date useful. I prefer it at the 6 position though. With that said, I do have a Hamilton Khaki Field Day Date Auto (discontinued) with the day at 12 and date at 6. It’s one of my favorites.

My relation with time is changing as I grow older and so is my attitude toward date complications. I used to think that a watch without a date was worthless, that a date complication was a must and a day+date even better. The position was less important to me than the presence of this information. One of the reasons I was so excited when I first saw an ana-digi watch was due to thinking that it was brilliant to have the day and date on a display that updated automatically and never needed adjusting. Obviously it was a long time ago.

Now, the Seiko SGG731 is the only analog watch that I own that has a day date complication and it happen to be at 3. Some other watches still have a date and I do prefer when it's at 6 but it's not something crucial to me anymore. I don't really care anymore about dates.

I used feel that the date was a requirement. Then I switched jobs and now I can’t wear a watch at work and find myself gravitating towards time only.

I’m not a huge fan of the day complication, but do like the idea of it being in Japanese or German (I speak neither). I find Japanese characters charming and aesthetically pleasing.

Day date complications are great only problem is when you don't keep it wound up you because you swap your watches, but recently I prefer no date or day ,I think it's because I can't read them without my glasses ,joys of getting old

I do love a day/date complication and a Hamilton for that matter. Had to do a watch change to get these pics but it was worth it to show some love for your thread.

I have that Sinn on my wish list too. Gorgeous watch!

When it's at 3, I don't care so much, but for me is harmonious to have at 6 o'clock. Hamilton with full word day at 12 is too much info for me.

for the last 2.5+ years or so I am permanently working from home, in the IT industry = I seat in front of a PC 7 days a week either working or for pleasure. So at some point days turn into a blur. Having day/date complication feels like something really useful - if only someone combined that with GMT complication ( my life circulates around  GMT and GMT+1, and for work quite frequently need to sync with people from GMT+5 1/2). Is there anything with that complication combination (that doesn't cost arm and leg, and kidney on top?).

·

I’d rather not have these complications at all. When they do exist, my answer re location is that it depends on the design of the dial: Which numbers are printed vs represented by indices, and the like.

I understand that form may simply have to follow function in some cases, but that doesn’t mean I’ll like the look.

One thing I find I can’t tolerate is that design where they make the dial and then just punch a hole in it for the complication so whatever numeral was there is sort of chopped in half to create a window. It looks like  one of my home DIY projects, and that is NOT a compliment.

·

I like and use them. All mine are at 3.

·

Depends on the execution. I think it is a lot easier to get wrong than just the date since it's taking up more dial room.  I'm used to it on Seiko divers. I like the day/date on my Sinn as it seems to balance out the rest of the dial, is framed and sized well, and gives a good base for the brand name to sit upon. This one is also a German-only day wheel, which I find fun. I am usually not a big fan of when the day and date are located far from each other on the dial, but there are exceptions.

Not a fan of the date  complication. Unless the watch is also aware of the current month, it means that five times each year the date must be reset by hand to deal with the date at the end of months with fewer than 31 days.  And that doesn't count the number of times the date must be reset if the (automatic/hand wind) watch is allowed to run down. The calendar on my wall and on my phone makes a date complication simply redundant and resetting the date is an annoying PITA.

As for a day indicator, I have one watch with a day/date complication. And frankly, if I'm going to have a date indicator, I appreciate having a day indicator as well. So while I happily do without either, if I'm going to have a date complication, I want a day indicator as well.

Wearing my IWC 3706 with modified Valjoux 7750 while doing a movement swap on my girlfriend’s Seiko 5 today for maximum Friday the 13th luck!

As I’ve also advanced in my years and now mostly work from home, I don’t really need a date complication on my watch, back in the days of signing and dating many times with a real pen every day, I wouldn’t be caught without a date watch. However, there’s one not mentioned version of day/date I like, mostly because I like subdail complications, and that’s the day dail.

I think they are attractive, and yes, I already know I’m weird 🥴

From a purely aesthetic point of view, I prefer a watch with no date indication at all, however from a functional standpoint, I appreciate having one. An ideal implementation for me would be the full day shown at the 12 (like the Rolex DayDate, or your Hamilton), and the date shown at 6 (and without a cyclops).

I have 6 watches in my collection with a day & date, and I must say that when I wear them, I really do find that I appreciate having the day shown along with the date.  They all have the day/date at the 3 o'clock position, with varying degrees of "aesthetic success".
